19.01.2022 Being a new parent is hard. When a baby is crying and you just cant soothe them, it can be frustrating. Other worries and frustrations in life can make matter...s worse, but this should never be taken out on babies. Infants and small children can be seriously injured by shaking, said Dr Susan Moloney, a paediatrician at Gold Coast Health. All babies cry. It is the main way babies can tell us what they need. Finding out what your baby needs is not always easy. If you think you are feeling overwhelmed, frustrated or extremely exhausted in caring for your child please take a break, Dr Moloney said. Her advice includes: It is better for you to let your baby cry safely in the cot, on their back, whilst you calm down rather than risk shaking him/her in frustration Visually check your baby regularly until you feel calmer in yourself Call a friend, relative or professional for help. Tell them how you feel Call a helpline such as Parent Line QLD on 1300 301 300. If you think a baby might have been shaken, call triple zero (000) immediately.

19.01.2022 MEASLES ALERT GOLD COAST The Gold Coast Public Health Unit has been notified of a second case of measles on the Gold Coast in a week. This person spent time... in the following locations while unknowingly being contagious: - Skateboard park in Currumbin on 24 September - Skateboard park in Runaway Bay on 27 September - Dreamworld on 29 September - Westfield Helensvale Shopping Centre on 30 September Members of the public who were in these areas, on these dates, need to be alert for symptoms of measles for the next three weeks. The initial signs and symptoms of measles include fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and sore red eyes. This is followed a few days later by a blotchy, red rash which often starts on the face and then becomes widespread over the body. If you have any of the measles signs or symptoms contact your GP. It is important to call the medical practice first if you think you might have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid spreading it to others. You are generally considered to be immune to measles if: You were born before 1966; or You have had two documented doses of a measles containing vaccine (such as MMR); or You have measles immunity proven on blood testing; or You have had laboratory-confirmed measles disease. Anyone who does not meet the above criteria would benefit by contacting a GP regarding immunisation. Vaccination now will not prevent infection from this particular exposure, but it will help protect you in the future. The measles vaccine is provided free for any person born during or since 1966. For more information on the measles virus, visit the Queensland Health website or call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84).

19.01.2022 Thanks Queensland for helping us get one step closer to our herd immunity target of 95%. Herd immunity is when enough people are vaccinated against a dis...ease to prevent it from spreading. When people vaccinate, they are helping protect those who cant because they are too young or too sick to be vaccinated. See more
