25.01.2022 AGM tomorrow July 20th, 2018 at the Uni at West Nowra. Election of officers, Astronomy Videos, Astronomy lectures and perhaps looking though giant telescopes. Starts at 7 PM. Turn off Yawal Road onto George Evans Road. Turn left at the second turning circle.
25.01.2022 next meeting 21 September 2018
25.01.2022 The July meeting also provided interest with Eugene talking about different star colours in the sky including beta Libra and Ceres. Harry talked about the lesser known gems in Carina such as NGC 6231 and Frank showed videos of recent interests in space and exploration.
24.01.2022 Something you have NEVER seen before. A full rotation of the Moon.
22.01.2022 One of the videos I showed at the May, 2019 meeting. Photographing the Moon is easier than you think. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6nZ29hA7_Q
22.01.2022 A short VID theorizing about the lack of contact with alien life in the universe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eaXZRAAc8Q
20.01.2022 Nasa's New Horizon spacecraft breaks the ice with new vision of Pluto and its twin Charon. For the first time, close up pictures have been received from the space probe that was launched on 19 January 2006. For more information visit the NASA web site. http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pag/newhorizons/main/index.html
20.01.2022 We had another fine meeting Friday May 17th, 2019 at the University of W'Gong at West Nowra (George Evans Road). Eugene O'connor gave a talk on things found in the night sky between the Southern Cross and the False Cross. Harry Roberts told us all about special flares on the Sun that originate near sunspots, and of course, I presented a trio of videos on all things Space. Coffee, tea, bickies,Tim Tams were provided for a donation (someone has to buy these things). The next meeting will be Friday June 21st, starting at 7 PM.
19.01.2022 Mars September 18 as the dust storms start to clear
19.01.2022 This was taken as the third contact creates a Diamond Ring effect when the sun bleeds around the edge of the moons surface at the end of the Total Eclipse. Taken in the Grand Tetons National Park USA Aug 21, 2017.
18.01.2022 During the March Meeting we had three segments. Eugene O'Connor gave a fine description of the Leo Trio (three galaxies easily observed in a small telescope, Harry Roberts gave a fine description of the Large Magellanic Cloud and things found wherein. Frank Gross (me) gave multimedia VIDS on theory of why we have not heard from other alien civilizations called "The Dark Forrest", a full rotation of the Moon, never before seen, and a history of the Mars Rover "Opportunity" which just recently "died" on the planet Mars after a much greater than expected lifetime. Unfortunately, the clouds had set in and we could not do any viewing of the heavens through our large telescope.
17.01.2022 I have one more for you now. It is a commercial for Chris Hadfield's Master Class (he is an astronaut with NASA). It is really awe inspiring. Join up if you wish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36xRVZDoJy0
17.01.2022 As noted below, this was just before the earths shadow completed Total Lunar Eclipse in July 2018.
16.01.2022 OK, here is another VID which had really taken my attention over the last few years. As an astronomer I recommend only Excerpt #1 as #2 and #3 get into philosophical arguments not dealing with astronomy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5t_a0dXn-g
15.01.2022 Hi All, I am glad to be part of this page. I am Samaneh, an amateur astronomer and a PhD student at University of South Australia. Astronomy is my favourite hobby and I have a passion for sharing that with others. That's why I am running a national wide research about astronomy tours and festivals. If you have ever visited a dark sky observing site or an observatory, if you have ever participated in an astronomy festival, tour or a stargazing night; please help me with my res...earch to share the beauties of the sky, help astronomical societies and win one of the 20, $50 Gift Vouchers by completing this survey: https://doit.az1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_001w7XYl5QIooZf I do appreciate your help and support. 14.01.2022 Hello All. I'm back from the USA after visiting my brother for Christmas. I'm feeling refreshed and ready for a new year of Astronomy. The next meeting of the Shoalhaven Astronomers will take place Friday January 18, 2019 at the University of Wollongong (Shoalhaven Campus), George Evans Road, West Nowra, 7 PM for a 7:30 PM start.
13.01.2022 Another great Symphony of Science VID I have shown at our monthly meetings. Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGK84Poeynk
12.01.2022 Hi all budding and amateur astronomers. I'm Frank Gross, the president of the Shoalhaven Astronomers. Each regular meeting of our club (3rd Friday of the month except December at the Uni at West Nowra) we have talks and multimedia presented. I usually show multimedia presentations gleaned off Youtube relating to astronomy and space exploration. I am going to start posting the videos I show on this website for your viewing pleasure. I hope you will find them educational and inspirational. Today's VID is all about Valentina Tereshkova, first woman into space. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDlEQabKQ5U
12.01.2022 The September meeting meeting was again very informative about things astronomical. Frank showed highlights of astronaut Chris Hadfield's great videos series. Harry presented inspiring topics of Milky Way viewing, collimating a telescope and recent sketches of Mars. The Star of the Month was Alpha Centauri. Good telescope viewing of the 4 planets concluded the night. Any member of the public wishing to come along, don't forget the third Friday of the month. Next meeting will hear from astronomer Claire Williams in the main University auditorium.
11.01.2022 VID I made over a year ago when I was near Rexburg, Idaho, USA viewing my first Total Solar Eclipse. Friends I was with were Frank Parker and his wife Sarah. Commentary by Frank Gross. The excited gentleman is Frank Parker. Music excerps George Harrison's "Here comes the Sun", John Murphy's "Adagio in D Minor", and Pink Floyd's "Eclipse"
10.01.2022 The June meeting turned out to be down in members attending. Well, it was freezing cold outside, what else can you expect. Still we had over 20 in attendance. Our two main speakers apologized for their non attendance as one had just had an eye operation and the other family business in Sydney. Still our new member John Bambury gave a really fine talk on "The Gems of Observing in the Night Sky of the Southern Hemisphere". Thank you for your time and effort on this John.... Your talk was well received. To round out the evening I showed about 25 minutes of Astronomical Videos. Some of these will be posted here very soon. Next month is the annual Annual General Meeting where officers are elected and members pay their subscriptions for the year. $25 standard member, $35 family membership, and $15 student.
10.01.2022 "The Resting Lion". A shot I took of the Milky Way at the back of Camel Rocks, Bermagui.
08.01.2022 I stumbled across this interesting page in the bing search.. It shows the solar system and position of the planets at different times in one year and multiple years in the past and future. https://www.bing.com/search
08.01.2022 Another video presented at the May 2019 meeting. Dr Brian Cox explaining Quantum Theory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcfQkxwz4Oo
07.01.2022 The July meeting was the AGM, and congratulations go to Mark Town and Frank Gross as the incoming President and Secretary/treasure respectively and there are also a few new committee members for this year, so we look forward to another successful year under their stewardship. Many thanks go to the Tracey, the outgoing Secretary/treasurer .
06.01.2022 Last VID for a week or so. Another one of my favourites. Please leave your comments about these VIDS, I love to read them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuxFXHircaI
06.01.2022 Taken on Tuesday 17/07/2018 using my P 900 in Moon Mode. Conjunction of Venus and the Crescent Moon with clouds intervening.
05.01.2022 My picture of the thin crescent Moon less than a day old. I took this picture from the front yard of my home in North Nowra early on in May. I was zoomed in about 50 magnifications and thankfully the camera did all the metering and exposing automatically.
05.01.2022 Sort of astronomy related. I found this ad for Audi cars involving the new and the old Mr Spock from Star Trek. If you are a trekkie you will probably chuckle at all the "in jokes" in this ad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UengULt6t7Q
04.01.2022 Another video I presented at the May 2019 meeting. What to look out for astronomically in 2019: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCPvZpHs8QA
02.01.2022 next meeting 17 August 2018
01.01.2022 I got her again! The International Space Station flying past the moon tonight over Byron Bay, Australia with Tim Peake on board, shortly to return to earth. I'm... so happy to get this as it was cloudy all day and night, but cleared beautifully for the crucial split second so all my planning paid off! Almost exactly a year ago today I captured Scott Kelly in the ISS much the same way, but tonight I used about 50 x 1/1600 frames to also stack and mosaic the entire moon within a few seconds of the transit to show the full disc of the moon and a cleaner shot with full colour detail. The transit itself lasted 0.47 seconds. Woohoo! Canon 70D with Celestron 9.25" Edge HD telescope for focal length of 2350mm .. 1/1650 f10 ISO 500 #astrophotography UPDATE - Thank you for all the shares, especially ESA covering Tim's return to Earth today! As promised, a high res version and the RAW file are now available, Public Domain and license free here : http://deography.com/iss-lunar-transit-tim-peake-prepares-/
01.01.2022 There is a GREAT website for those interested in Astrophotography. It's called "Astronomical Picture of the Day" or APOD for short. Google the whole name and you will be amazed at the pictures from around the world that make it onto this site.
