25.01.2022 Priceless! Be a friend and share our work #charity #humanity #worldwide #team #children #education #surgery #hospital #camps #candid #instapic

23.01.2022 It has been a challenging start to 2020. In light of the escalating COVID-19 pandemic and international travel bans imposed around the world, we have had to make the difficult decision of indefinitely postponing our mission to Ethiopia this year. The board of GMF Australia wishes you and your loved ones the best during these difficult times.

22.01.2022 Day 4 Today the team was spread right across Jordan: from Tafileh in the South to Jerash & Ajloun in the North. Today we saw lots of unwell children. Our hearts went out to a 6 year old girl with cerebral palsy who had developed pneumonia from the common cold. Then there was the little 5 month old boy with cradle cap like weve never seen before, severe & involving his entire scalp and face, he couldnt stop himself from scratching.... After the clinics Team GMF left the SAMS team to visit two orphanages in Rawda, a suburb of Amman. With money we raised from Australia we purchased groceries and put together 150 food packages for orphaned families worth 40 JD. Each package could feed a family for a month. We then delivered these to the two orphanages. While visiting we were asked to see two orphan brothers, 5 & 7 years old with a skin condition they had from the age of 1 year old. They had dry, flaky skin and sunburnt easily, so much so that they were always covered from head to toe and rarely went outside. Their eyes were red, there skin was covered in splotchy pigmentation. They had been told they had skin cancer by the local doctors. The elder boy had had 14 lesions excised from his skin over his short life. The older boy had some medical insurance but the younger boy did not and he had a lesion on his eyelid that required excision and biopsy which the family could not afford. Questioning the diagnosis they had been given and suspecting something else, we promptly arranged for them to see the dermatologist from the SAMS team the following day. At the end of a long day we sat down and reflected on how confronting the patients conditions had been today. Pathology like we never have seen before back home but at least we could help and make a difference.

22.01.2022 Our missions around the world are only possible thanks to our growing family of dedicated supporters and behind the scenes team work. Our teams members have helped spread the word, given up endless weekends and many hours to help raise funds for a much needed cause. Every contribution, big and small makes a difference and to clarify, no raised funds is for any travel or accomodation costs. Your donations will help the much needed and as we approach our next mission in Bangla...desh, we look forward to sharing travel diaries from our upcoming mission. Stay tuned. 20.01.2022 Since August 2017, the Rohingya refugee crisis has become one of the largest and fastest growing humanitarian issues of our time. The United Nations estimates over 700,000 refugees reside in Coxs bazar, with the Kutupalong settlement growing to become the largest of its kind. 15 volunteers from GMF Australia partnered with the Hope foundation to provide medical, dental and surgical care to Rohingya refugees and the underserved local community in a week long mission from 19-2...6 April 2019. The team was split into medical, dental and surgical groups. Our surgeon and gynaecologist worked at the Hope field hospital in Ramu. Cases performed included hysterectomies with vaginal repairs, dilation and curettage, vaginal and cervical polypectomies, inguinal hernia repairs in adults and children , right hemicolectomy, excision of keloids, surgical wound debridement, removal of foreign body and perianal fistula treatment. Our medical team and dentist worked at the Hope field hospital - Camp 4, Modhur Chara. We found the Rohingya refugees living in a severely overcrowded camps. Our doctors worked with local medics treating respiratory illness, scabies, fungal skin infections, complaints of generalised malaise and fatigue, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, diabetes, hypertension, cases of cataracts and pterygiums, otitis media, UTIs, acute management of seizure and also burns. Our dentist treated caries and periodontal disease. There was an endless prevalence of tooth decay and multiple tooth extractions were performed. Dental hygiene packs were distributed among the population. Our pharmacist was kept busy dispensing medicines free of cost, as well also stocking up and procuring the anaesthetic supplies for the hospital in Ramu. GMF Australia bore the expense of the surgical and medical cost of the mission and also the cost of the hospital stay of our surgical patients. Team GMF Australia distributed rain coats, back packs and toys to children in the camp. Some families were given fans and mosquito nets to manage the sweltering conditions. Hand sanitizers, sanitary pads and nappies were given to post partum women. Our team was humbled to visit an orphanage in Coxs bazar which was home to about 400 girls aged between 5 and 15 years. Food was donated to cater the children for a few weeks. GMF Australia would like to thank Hope foundation for their assistance in co-ordinating this mission and also congratulate them for setting up the field hospital and the hospital in Ramu. GMF Australia would like to wish them success in their setting up of the fistula clinic project. GMF Australia would like to thank all those who donated to make this mission successful. This includes monetary donations from countless individuals, as well as medical supplies from Johnson and Johnson. Without all of this generous support, these missions would not be possible.

19.01.2022 We are still working to help people all over the globe. Thank you for your support! #givingback #gmf #globalmedicalfoundationaustralia

17.01.2022 Day 3 The team travelled to As-Salt, Mafraq & Ajloun today and was another busy day for the team. We saw more evidence of the effects of war, having to flee ones country & being displaced people in a foreign land. Whether it was in the suspicion of a child receiving a toy from one of us or the emotional outpour of the adults, it was evident that their lives had been significantly and, in some cases, irreparably burdened by war.

Thank you Dr Iftekhar Mahmood and the entire HOPE foundation team for being such wonderful hosts and for co-ordinating this mission.... 14.01.2022 Day 5 After a day spent in clinics in Ajloun, Irbid & Mafraq, our second last day ended with the SAMS closing ceremony. In the 5 days so far, the team had treated 4277 patients, the majority of which were in General Practice. The cardiology team and orthopaedic teams had been busy at work with surgeries, cardiac angiography, stents and open heart surgery. The cardiac team alone has performed more than 100 procedures. We heard about the highlights of the trip:... A patient diagnosed with an acute heart attack and had a stent inserted by the SAMS team, which saved her life. This intervention was otherwise not possible for her as she could not afford the local system. One of the German doctors organised a donation of $3000 from her friends back home to sponsor the urology surgery of another of the patients we had seen this week. We reflected on the challenges of refugee healthcare, the stories of heartache but also those of inspirational survival, the compassion and the emotionally uplifting work we had all done this week. Our dermatologist colleague saw our orphan boys from the night before and gave them a formal diagnosis of Xeroderma Pigmentosum. He took time with the family explaining the condition and treatment. Through the help of the SAMS team in Jordan the two boys, including the one without insurance, will now be seen by a local dermatologist for ongoing management.

08.01.2022 Day 6 Our final day was one of mixed emotions. Off we went as always, spread across Jordan for another day of work - Salt, Irbid & Mafraq. Our final day brought more interesting cases and stories of loss and determination. We returned to say our goodbyes and go our separate ways. There was an air of anticipation to soon be returning to our loved ones back home but also a sadness that our mission had come to an end. No longer would we be working with such a talented and mot...ivated group of doctors nor would we be touched by the patients stories of hardship & survival. Amongst it all, the facts were telling of our achievement: by the end of the 6th day just under five thousand patient encounters. Many thousands of problems solved and medications prescribed and distributed for free. Most importantly thousands of lives touched - both those of the patients but the doctors as well.

08.01.2022 Here are some tips to improve physical and mental well-being while staying home during the COVID-19 crisis. BUILD ROUTINE AND KEEP BUSY Having a routine with what works for you creates a sense of balance. Having too much time and not keeping busy may increase negative feelings.... EXERCISE Exercising regularly improves both physical and psychological well being and strengthens immunity. SLEEP HYGIENE Maintaining good sleep hygiene helps improve productivity and quality of life. HEALTHY EATING Maintain a well balanced diet as much as possible (especially fruits and vegetables), and maintain hydration. PRAYERS Prayer, religious and spiritual practices and meditation are important to help overcome difficult times and feel safe. COMMUNICATION communicate and keep in touch with family, friends and neighbors. Look out for each other, especially the elderly and the vulnerable. ASSIST AND ENGAGE by volunteering and contributing to the community in whatever way you can, in your area of expertise. REFLECT Reflect on life, goals and plans for the future.

04.01.2022 One way to slow the spread of viruses, such as coronavirus, is social distancing (also called physical distancing) The more space between you and others, the harder it is for the virus to spread. IN PUBLIC:... Social distancing in public means people: - stay at home and only go out if it is absolutely essential - keep 1.5 metres away from others avoid physical greetings such as handshaking, hugs and kisses - use tap and go instead of cash - travel at quiet times and avoid crowds -avoid public gatherings and at risk groups like older people - practise good hygiene HOUSEHOLDS: All Australians are required to stay home unless it is absolutely necessary to go outside. Australians are permitted to leave home for the essentials, such as: - shopping for food - exercising in a public space such as a park, limited to no more than 2 people - going out for medical appointments or to the pharmacy - providing care or support to another person in a place other than your home - going to work if you cannot work from home Steps for social distancing in all homes include: - keeping visitors to a minimum - regularly disinfecting surfaces that are touched a lot, such as tables, kitchen benches, hand rails and doorknobs - increasing ventilation in the home by opening windows or adjusting air conditioning If someone in your household is sick, you should: - care for the sick person in a single room, if possible - keep the number of carers to a minimum - keep the door to the sick persons room closed. If possible, keep a window open - wear a surgical mask when you are in the same room as the sick person - The sick person should also wear a mask when other people are in the same room - protect at-risk family members by keeping them away from the sick person - At-risk people include those aged over 65 years or people with a chronic illness. If possible, find them somewhere else to live while the family member is sick. WORKPLACE: Steps for social distancing in the workplace include: - stop shaking hands to greet others - consider cancelling non-essential meetings - If needed, hold meetings via video conferencing or phone call - put off large meetings to a later date - hold essential meetings outside in the open air if possible - promote good hand, sneeze and cough hygiene - provide alcohol-based hand rub for all staff - eat lunch at your desk or outside rather than in the lunch room - regularly clean and disinfect surfaces that many people touch - open windows or adjust air conditioning for more ventilation - limit food handling and sharing of food in the workplace - avoid non-essential travel - promote strict hygiene among food preparation (canteen) staff and their close contacts Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by COVID-19 in Australia and around the world.
