25.01.2022 This year I had the honor of selecting one image from the non winners of the David Malin Awards, for one of the months of the Calendar. I called it the Calendar Editor's Prize... which amounted to nothing! Except the $150 for use of the image! I picked Dave Buckton's "Boardwalk to the Stars".

17.01.2022 2018 is interesting in that there will be two Blue Moons, thats when you get two full moons in same month, and one of them, on January 31, will be a "red moon" ie, totally eclipsed. Will that make it a "purple moon"?

16.01.2022 Shortlisted finalists for the David Malin Comp...

12.01.2022 Been working on the 2020 calendar! Not much in way of eclipses and conjunctions, except a close "Great conjunction" of Jupiter and Saturn in December. Hope to have calendar out by July 19.

09.01.2022 Calendar is progressing well, images are being judged currently and months are nearly done. Am expecting it to go to printer in early August at this stage.

09.01.2022 Congratulations Luke Tscharke for being the overall winner in the David Malin awards! For the calendar I just darkened the sky slightly. I also really liked his image of the 12 apostles, even though it didnt get an honourable mention.

09.01.2022 And finally, congrats to Tom Elliott for his winning widefield image of the lighthouse.

08.01.2022 Here is the cover for 2018! Martin Pughs "Ngc 6118", otherwise known as the Fighting Dragons of Ara! Note, this does not necessarily mean that this image has won a category of the David Malin Awards!

07.01.2022 What does this even mean!? The answer was... 8! I said four, but other answers might be 29, 30 or infinite!

06.01.2022 Have been working on calendar for 2019. The timing of Easter next year is an interesting example of how the way the church calculates, rather than a strict astronomical interpretation. The definition is normally given as "the first Sunday after the first full moon after equinox", however in 2019, equinox is on 21/3 at 7:58 AEST, with the full moon about four hours later at 11:42. So youd expect Easter Sunday to be the 24th of March, bu instead its the 21st of April. The reason is the way the church defines equinox. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computus

01.01.2022 Yes, we are still open for business, just in "hibernation " until things return to normal. It is my intention to put out a calendar for 2021, but it will be out later in the year as Astrofest has been called off and David Malin awards submissions allowed up to end of June. So Id say calendar will be out August-September. Will print fewer than I normally would!
