25.01.2022 Nick Cave 's Textile art of Weavings nickcaveart.com

24.01.2022 Norwegian artist Lene Kilda creates figurative sculptures inspired by the emotions and personalities of children. Believing that body language is their purest form of communication, Kilda visualizes each childlike pose with cement-sculpted hands and feet, and fragments of textured clothing made from colored, metal mesh. The incomplete pieces invite the viewer to use their imagination to fill in the visual gaps and illusory contours, and perhaps delve into their own childhood memories. 23.01.2022 Carol Shaw-Sutton's artwork often consists of personal narrative objects and installations utilizing both ancient and more modern textile techniques that requir...e a labor-intensive commitment of focus and time. Their goal is to simultaneously value and at the same time, transcend the notion of time and space. In a visually poetic language they deal with deep human concerns for harmony and release through the body and spirit. Counting, longing, journeying, scarring, repairing, caring, crossing and empathy have become recurrent themes in her work. Her early sculptural work were large-scale installations referencing passages and journeys through the use of constructed twig forms of boats, rivers and vortex forms. Her more recent installations and wall works deal more directly with the human body and issues of loss and empathy in knitted linen or digitally silk. A year ago, she began working again on small scale forms that reference growth/time and reflects on the human experience of loss and healing. She works intuitively and makes objects that are laden with meaning. Writer Betty Park has noted that in Shaw-Sutton's work, there are many clues that don't tell a simple story or describe the boundaries of any one experience; neither are they so personal or obscure as to inhibit the communion the viewer seeks. Rather they are like myths: fertile sources of many stories, many interpretations. At its root, Shaw-Sutton's work is traditional, yet also highly original, elegant and eloquent in its form and concept. She has stepped into an unknown land that somehow feels like home. She has been exhibiting her fiber sculpture in the U.S. and internationally since the 1970s. Her work is included in numerous major museum collections including the Oakland Museum of Art, The DeYoung Museum, The Museum of Art and Design, among others, as well as corporate and private holdings worldwide. She received three NEA Individual Artist Fellowships, the prestigious Young American Award from the American Craft Council, the United States/Japan and the United States/France Fellowships and many others from her city and university. Shaw-Sutton recently retired from the School of Art at CSULB where she headed their Fiber Program for more than thirty years and is now Professor Emeritus. In 2015 she co-curated the adventuresome Fiberlicious exhibition at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in Barnsdall Park, as well as jurying the Textile Society of America’s contemporary fiber exhibition at CAFAM and recently curating Earthly Delights at Studio Channel Islands. https://www.facebook.com/carol.shawsutton http://www.carolshawsutton.com/

09.01.2022 Alanakar revisited: an ari embroidery project’ opens this week at Gallery 76, Concord. Embroiderers Guild New South Wales Several years ago I conducted an experimental collaborative project with Zardozi Original, a small enterprise in Howrah District, West Bengal, India who have great expertise in Mughal embroidery traditions, namely ari embroidery. The project was titled Alanakar, a Hindi word that translates as tracery, adornment or decoration; metaphorically it represen...ts visual enhancement or value addition. The project explored different idea, motifs and references to integrate pattern, line and motif into the tracery of natural colours with handmade embroidered, dyed and woven textiles. The project, facilitated by CRC Exports, Kolkata, West Bengal added value to the Zardozi Original experience of designing and the initial group of embroideries being exhibited at Barometer Gallery, Paddington in 2015. As a social engagement and design development project the Alanakar integrates traditional artisan expertise with enhanced design knowledge and successfully inspired new design directions for the group. One series, Earthlines, involved the translation of hand drawn lines with embroidered French knots that referenced text and weaving, while the final works alluding to landscape, the horizon and weft lines in weaving. After the 2015 exhibition several more drawings were translated into embroidery with the silk and embroidery threads being dyed with locally sourced Eucalyptus pilularis and Eucalyptus cinerea leaves. The week, the ‘Alanakar revisited: an ari embroidery project’ exhibition opens at Gallery 76 at the NSW Embroidery Guild complex in Concord. The exhibition includes a selection of embroideries from the original project alongside these latter pieces. - Liz Williamson Details in the flyer.

09.01.2022 In 2009 Brilish artist Kirstie Macleod, with seed capital from the British Council, embarked upon a global embroidery project called the Red Dress Project. Betw...een 2009 and 2019 the dress travelled the globe being continuously embroidered by over 120 artisans. The embroiderers include refugees in Palestine, victims of civil war in Kosovo, Rwanda and DR Congo, individuals in South Africa, Kenya, Japan, Paris, Sweden and Peru, upmarket studios in Bombay and Saudi Arabia, artists in Wales and Colombia alongside initiatives to support women in poverty such as Missibaba in Cape Town, South Africa, and FanSina working with Bedouin embroiderers based in the mountains above St Catherine's in Egypt's Sinai. This is both an extraordinary work of collective art and profound and eloquent social commentary. It is also an example of how potent the Attire language is capable of becoming. See more
