25.01.2022 Some people look forward to State Budget week, some people look forward to Christmas... we look forward to the yearly election of Victorian Mayors and Deputy Ma...yors. Congratulations to all 76 Mayors elected across the state. Great to see slow and steady steps towards gender parity. Not quite record-busting (37 was the record of women Mayors in 2019/20), but close. Local Women Leading Change

25.01.2022 The forthcoming October postal election for the Yarra City Council is starting to take shape with current councillors beginning to indicate their intention to be candidates. Cr Jolly, OBrien, Stone (moving to Nicholls Ward) have put up their hands with Cr Bosler standing down. The FRA will be surveying candidates in October and will be seeking other ways to communicate to residents the interests, expectations and experience of all candidates. Watch this space!

24.01.2022 Godzilla stumbles! VCAT has refused a permit for 84-104 Johnston Street on a multiple number of grounds and thus requiring a re-application. The Tribunal has supported the Council on a number of issues related to height, bulk and heritage though has fallen short on some of the FRA objections.

24.01.2022 The Age Gertrude Street is starting to feel like a "garden party" as bars and restaurants seat customers on top of on-street parking spots and the Fitzroy eateries don't want it to end. They have banded together with retailers and residents as the "People of Gertrude Street" to advocate for the outdoor dining experiment to continue beyond the pandemic.

23.01.2022 In the book, Sevtsuk also makes the case that lively shopping areas do more than provide access to goods and services: They are civic and social spaces where people mingle and gain access to opportunities. 17.01.2022 Age on Councils budget debate

17.01.2022 Council drops the ball on responding to COVID19! It was disappointing that some councillors preferred to put aside the urgency of the pandemic and the emergency of climate action for a future council. Yarra City Council has a reputation of taking on issues and showing leadership....it fell short. -... The Yarra City Council meeting on Tuesday August 4 considered the Draft Budget 2020 2021 and was dominated by at times a heated and inadequate debate on whether the City should at this time of the pandemic and economic crisis seek loan funds for local infrastructure works. Cr Stephen Jollys bid to have the Council not proceed with the proposed 2% rate increase and to refer Councils capital works projects to a loan raising program of $5.6m (including bike projects, leisure center energy upgrades, Local Area Traffic Plans was defeated 7 votes to 2. Crs Jolly and OBrien supported the motion. Later in the debate on the Budget Cr Daniel Nguyen moved for the Council to implement a loan raising program of up to $20m under a rigorous legislative process to fund the Yarra Climate Emergency Plan and COVID Recovery Projects in support of public housing residents and young people. The vote of 6 votes to 3 votes (Crs Nguyen, Jolly, OBrien) reflected the view of the majority of councillors that though in principle it was supported they were not prepared to act now. The impact of the pandemic on the City of Yarra, its economy, social wellbeing and environment cannot be overstated. The role of City governments along with other spheres of government is to act and act now. Both State and Federal governments have recognised the need to put aside their ideological and debt and deficit differences to ensure that whilst fighting the virus the economic and social wellbeing of our nation, our states and our communities should be protected. It was disappointing that some councillors preferred to put aside the urgency of the pandemic and the emergency of climate action for a future council. Yarra City Council has a reputation of taking on issues and showing leadership....it fell short!

16.01.2022 Common Yarra...implement the Brunswick Street Master Plan and take advantage of the changing views on public and private space. Victoria to turn roads and footpaths into dining spaces Victoria is also going down the road of turning roads and footpaths into dining spaces, to get the hospitality industry up and running again. NSW is also looking at doing this.... New York did it, and its worked and so has Lithuania, which turned entire city centres into pedestrian mall/dining spaces/parks. The way we live life is changing but not all of it is going to be negative.

12.01.2022 Local and Integrated Planning A gathering of local residents together with Cr Amanda, Stone, Cr Sophie Wade, Nicholls Ward and Cr Stephen Jolly, Langridge Ward, met on Sunday late afternoon on the corner George and Greeves Streets to view what Local Area Place Making (LAPM) has delivered over the past 3 years. And the results of the works carried out by Council were sobering to say the least. The LAPM seeks to respond to council priorities, values and commitments, particularl...y as to consultation, climate change, greening and biodiversity, community safety and well-being and functional connectivity. It is designed to consult and be informed by the local community to get maximum buy in. It provides for participatory decision-making. So the proposed new version of the LAPM which will go to Council needs to be presented first to the community to ensure that it is informed and supported by the local neighbourhood. Keep an eye out for the #RockAroundTheBlock truck in our much loved precincts, stopping for 30 minute performances before trucking off to the next destination . Please stay COVID safe and follow all advice in line with the current restrictions while you're out and about. Keep you distance and don't gather. Full details: https://bit.ly/373nH3a #YarraLife

03.01.2022 Sila Espresso Bar...nostalgia lives on!

03.01.2022 Cr Jolly has been an alternate voice for the Budget 2020/21. Unfortunately his views and that of other councillors is not heard unless you subscribe to a daily newspaper. Yarra News has a role to play informing residents of the discussion, debates and decisions of the Council. The lack of a local newspaper that informs rather than markets the work of councils impacts on local democracy.

03.01.2022 For the interest of FRA fb friends. Next week the FRA is represented at the VCAT Compulsory Hearing on the Kerr, Argyle and Fitzroy Street 7 storey apartment development that fails to respond to the neighbourhood streetscape, the heritage value of the terraces, has inadequate setbacks and performs poorly on sustainability.
