23.01.2022 As those endurance inclined people amongst us get ready to watch the live stream of the London Marathon this evening, we have some clarification on the "super shoe" situation in relation to Athletics South competition. The attached link, from World Athletics, details international competition, and we have been advised that Athletics Australia currently have at least one working group looking into the effects and implications on local competition with Australia. Based on the i...nformation and advice that we have been given, the situation for the start of sanctioned Athletics South competition next weekend will be as follows; Athletes who wear the shoes which are subject to qustion/clarification will not be disqualified from interclub competition. However, if any athlete wearing such shoes achieves a performance which is likely to affect rankings/records, the results will be annotated with the type of shoes worn. TMA have indicated that any such record breaking performance will be noted, but will not be ratified until a final determination is made by AA. In summary, the advice we give is that if you are feeling like you are capable of a record breaking performance, and have non-questionable shoes as an option, maybe wear them and eliminate doubt. We shall endeavour to keep you updated should the situation change or be further clarified.

15.01.2022 As requested at the last Athletics South meeting, the attached image shows the most recent information given to us from Hobart City Council for bookings up until 8 November. Please note this is only a guide, and can change at short notice.
14.01.2022 As we are now less than a week away from the start of the track & field season, and also the start of a new registration year, just a reminder that all 2019-20 registrations finish on Wednesday. So far we have almost 100 people registered across our 6 Clubs ready to go for the new season. But, an important reminder. If you were registered in the 2019-20 season, in any capacity, you are in the system. If you have a problem renewing, please contact your Club, and it can be lo...oked into. Please do not just decide it is easier to do a new registration. This creates more work that is unnecessary. Also, don't forget that if you are using Ticket To Play vouchers, this needs to be done through the Athletics Tasmania office during their business hours (Mon/Tue/Thur) and cannot be done on a Saturday.
13.01.2022 As we approach the start of the Track & Field season, all Athletics South clubs now have their registration portals operational, and we already have nearly 50 people registered across the clubs. An important note to any athlete wishing to use a Ticket To Play voucher for their registration, this needs to be done through the Athletics Tasmania office during their business hours, so don't leave it to the last minute. AT only have office staff during certain hours, so you need to fit in with those hours (it can be done over the phone). Unfortunately anyone turning up to compete on a Saturday wanting to register using these vouchers will be unable to.

12.01.2022 As you would know, Athletics South have a number of long standing perpetual trophies which we proudly present each year to the winners of our named events. Next Saturday will see the presentation of the named Cross Country events which we managed to hold during our shortened season. Unfortunately 2 of our perpetual trophies appear to have gone walkabout over the last year, and we are seeking assistance in locating them.... If anyone can assist with the location of the female perpetual trophies for the Graeme Cruise Memorial and the Max Cherry Memorial, could they please let us know as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.
09.01.2022 This is Grant Page. He likes to win trophies and he has been quite good at it over the years, regularly cleaning up at the AS Winter Season Presentations. Unfortunately for Grant, the COVID shortened season has meant that there won’t be any of the regular awards presented this year. However, trophies for the named events will still be awarded and will be presented to winners after the Froggy Wise Handicaps at Claremont this Saturday, along with a BBQ. For those wondering about the AS T&F Awards for 2019/20, these will be presented after Come & Try Day on 3 October.

04.01.2022 The township of Snug has been starved of top flight sporting entertainment since the demise of the Channel Football Club in 2016. So expect a big turnout from the locals to watch this Saturday’s Cross Country Interclub event starting on the foreshore at the end of Beach Road. The course covers a variety of terrain, with gravel tracks, a section of bitumen and a footbridge over the Snug River, made famous in this iconic photo featuring Chris Sullivan taken in 2018.... A choice of 3km or a double serve of two laps is on offer, with both races getting underway at the usual time of 10am.
03.01.2022 You may have noticed a new event on the Come & Try Day program which a few people are asking questions about. It is a Last Man/Woman Standing event. How long is it? Who knows, that depends on the last 2 athletes. In short, we are planning for a field of 10, which 2 from each Club. The ten will then draw for starting positions and then start 40m apart (number 5 will be on the 200m start, 10 will be on the finish line and so on). The drawing could be crucial. ... Once the gun goes, everyone starts running, and runs until the person behind them tags them, at which stage they are out, and, as the name suggests, the Last Man Standing is the winner. So it is as much about tactics as speed/endurance, as is you get a gun 400m runner drawn at number 2, they may chase down number 3, 4 and 5 within 300m and tag them out, and then hit the wall and the 1500m runner who drew number 1, would then just cruise up to 2 and tag him out..... provided number 10 hadn't snuck up on him in the early stages. So, will it take 2 minutes, or will it take 10?? That is all part of the mystery of the event.
