11.01.2022 Due to the continuing COVID-19 related issues, the existing declared hotspots in NSW (greater Sydney, Central Coast and Illawarra areas) and the new Queensland situation, the ACT Athletics Competition Committee has made the decision to postpone the Under 20 and Open Championships by 2 weeks. This includes the Individual non-championship events being held concurrently with the Championships. It will now be held over the weekend on 12/13/14 February 2021 with the venue still ...intended to be the AIS (subject to availability confirmation by the AIS). While there are no guarantees that the COVID-19 situation will have improved by mid-February, we are hopeful that this will be the case. We are looking at holding a regular ACT Summer Series meet on Saturday 30 January 2021 but this will be held at the Woden Park Athletics field. We understand that the change of dates is at fairly short notice but we have had little choice with this continually evolving situation. Please keep safe and we hope to see you in mid February.

03.01.2022 IMPORTANT AACT U20/OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS INFORMATION: In response to the Covid-19 situation in Victoria, the ACT government has just announced some changes in regards to entering the ACT. All athletes, parents, coaches and spectators travelling from Victoria to the ACT Champs this weekend need to be aware of the following information:... -The ACT government are asking that anyone who is currently in Victoria, to stay in Victoria -ACT residents who are travelling from Victoria to the ACT and not back by 11.59pm on Friday 12 February, will have to notify ACT Health and enter into self quarantine when they arrive back in the ACT -Victorian residents who are travelling from Victoria to the ACT, and are not in the ACT by 11.59pm on Friday 12 February would have to apply for an exemption for the purpose of an 'essential activity' to be allowed across the border into the ACT. Athletics ACT does not believe that you would be successful in receiving such an exemption -If you have recently been to Victoria, you must check if you have been to any COVID-19 affected areas during the dates and times listed. If you have been in any of these sites, you must immediately enter quarantine and get tested. Athletics ACT believes that any Victorian resident that has arrived in the ACT by 11.59pm on Friday 12 February will still be eligible to compete across our championships. This could change at short notice. We will continue to keep all athletes posted as any news comes to hand. Please continue to monitor your health, and if any Covid-19 symptoms present themselves you must not enter the venue and get yourself tested immediately.

02.01.2022 ACT Championships Day 1 Review A world record and 5 World U20 qualifiers as ACT athletes take the honours on day one. Despite an influx of interstate athletes, four Canberra athletes claimed big wins as the ACT Championships got underway on Friday at the AIS track in Canberra. A record 700 athletes have entered for the championships, with many events equal to a nationals final, making it the best domestic track and field meet for 11 months.... In the very first event Paralympian Vanessa Low (A) broke her own T61 long jump World Record with her first attempt of 5.09m. I’m really pleased with it, there are still a lot of things I didn’t execute well, so I know there are improvements, so it is really exciting for the year ahead, said Vanessa. She also fouled jumps of 5.16m and 5.25m. In the fourth round her left prosthetic leg smashed into the metal long jump board marker, causing her to tumble heavily into the long jump pit, resulting in her withdraw from the competition. In second, Sarah Walsh was just short of her PB with a leap of 5.28m, but achieved her 10th T64 Paralympic Games B qualifier. Vanessa Low was the first of four significant wins for ACT athletes. 12-time national champion Lauren Boden (A) held off Doha world championships teammate Sara Klein, 56.70 to 57.03 in the 400m hurdles. ACT athletes were surprise winners in the open 800m titles. National junior record holder Keely Small, held off national open record holder Catriona Bisset, 2:01.98 to 2:02.16. I ran a 2:03 a couple of weeks ago on my own, so I knew I was ready to run quick, said Keely. I felt really strong on the first lap and didn’t feel I was fading until about 150m to go where I was starting to really hurt and had to really did deep. It is ages since I run an eight. I’m really happy with the time especially this early in the season. Keely, 19, has continued her tremendous season form which included an 11 seconds 1500m PB at Zatopek. She will be a genuine force in middle-distance events this year. Behind Keely and Catriona, three athletes achieved World U20 qualifiers: Gigi Maccagnini (V) 2:05.10, Matilda Ryan, 2:05.60 and Jaylah Hancock-Cameron, 2:06.62. In the men’s 800m, Canberra’s Tom Palfrey, 18, defeated a strong field to win in a World U20 qualifier of 1:48.26. He defeated Sydney 16-year-old Charlie Jeffreson, who achieved his second World U20 qualifier with 1:49.07. World champion, Madi de Rozario (W) made her first appearance on the track for the summer, with a comfortable win in the women’s para 800m clocking 1:55.01. While in the men’s Jake Lappin (A) took the honours in 1:43.51. Canberra’s Angus Proudfoot clocked his second sub-52 time of the year, winning the 400m hurdles in a season’s best of 51.57.
