18.01.2022 Top Fuel Champion, Wayne Newby, was out to defend his title at the opening round of the season - Atlantic Oils East Coast Thunder - for Rapisarda Autosport International. Newby went to the top of the qualifying sheet after the three sessions with a 3.839 at 314mph. That time would stick to be Low ET of the event. His teammates, Damien Harris and Ashley Sanford, did well to secure the number 2 and 5 spots respectively with a 3.84 and a 3.93 second pass.... All three drivers made it into the semi-final, guaranteeing a Rapisarda Top Fuel Dragster would go to the final. Newby faced Sanford in one pairing, with Newby powering to the win with a 3.91 at 297mph. Harris lost to Xiberras in the other semi-final, but not without putting on a show for the fans, with both drivers running side-by-side sub 4-second passes. Harris' 3.91 was not enough for Xiberras' 3.85. This left Newby to face Xiberras in the final, which would go down as one of the best match ups of the weekend. They both left hard and kept their header flames lit right down to the finish line. Newby recording a 3.88 at 311mpg to Xiberras' winning 3.85 at 315mph. Although team Rapisarda fell short from taking out the event, the driving and tuning from the Rapisarda Autosport International Team was nothing short of impressive. A huge credit to Santo Rapisarda, Santo Jnr, Santino, and the amazing team they have put together. They do a lot for the sport of drag racing and have become recognised around the world for what they do.
