23.01.2022 The brainchild of adventurer, Don McIntyre, Class Globe 5.80 is a compact sail boat with so much potential, already proving popular with sailors of all stripes all around the world. The Mini 5.80 is for all sailors, young and old, who have a dream to sail oceans in small, fun, affordable and proven safe, ocean-going yachts, McIntyre says. Simple plywood construction means anyone can build this Mini in a few months, or your local shipwright can do it for you."... All it takes is Building plans (Euro $300), hand tools, plywood, WEST SYSTEM Epoxy resin, and space to start building your Globe 5.80. Build time is approximately 500 to 600 hours. #BoatInABox #Epoxy #expoxyresin #boatbuilding More about this nifty little craft here: https://www.westsystem.com.au/boat-in-a-box/

20.01.2022 O'Neill Shipwrights at Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard are working on a massive teak deck project aboard the 60-metre motor yacht, OCEANA. They are pre-fabbing the teak decking at their Sydney base, which will then be freighted to the vessel which is located at GCCM. The main challenges on the project include the sheer volume of materials required. It took a lot of time organise the large volumes of products and materials to undertake the works, Andy explains. For examp...le, we have approximately 7,100 lineal metres of teak decking, each hand selected, cut to shape and then laid, as well as 168kg of Sikaflex 290 dc deck caulking, 450kg of Techniglue R60 and 170-square-metres of substrate panelling. It’s a massive job. We have always used Techniglue because it’s so easy to work with, easy to apply and we never have issues. It’s the best epoxy glue on the market, it has great working times with both the slow and fast hardeners and never lets go. I've been using it for years and will continue to do so as it has the best results. Techniglue R60 from ATL Composites is a high strength adhesive suitable for bonding structural elements fabricated from timber, fibreglass, concrete and metal. 17.01.2022 There’s a special passion project underway on Sydney’s Northern Beaches for ATL Composites’ Mac Dalton his 2.7m tender dubbed Lightning McQueen. The ATL Technical Sales Manager (NSW/VIC) briefed esteemed naval architect, Andy Dovell on his concept for a super lightweight carbon fibre, high density foam dinghy which he wanted as a tender for his 25ft motor yacht, Calming Effect, also designed by Dovell. I gave him the length, width and depth and told him I wanted it to ...be double chined, so it would be simpler and easier for me to build. What he designed is a really cool looking shape. Using ATL Composite products, the basic shell is comprised of 8mm DuFLEX Composite Panels cored with DIAB’s Divinycell H100 foam laminated with a layer of 200gm carbon plain weave reinforcements on either side. Divinycell H foams have a proven track record in virtually every industry where sandwich composites are used, and is a favourite of the marine industry around the world because of its impressive mechanical performance. It has to be light so I can carry it, explains Mac. It will be stored at the local dinghy rack and I will then carry it down to the water. The rubber ducky I have at the moment is 20kg and it’s easy to carry. So, I want to keep the new tender down to around 25kg maximum if possible The new tender is a slightly bigger boat and hopefully a lot drier. It gets quite choppy on the water, and when you’re with two or three adults, you get wet bums and faces. I’ll be using the same engine, 3.5hp outboard, and we’re hoping it will plane. We’ll wait and see. The tender’s nickname, Lightning McQueen came about during a Skype call with Mac’s grandson, JonJon, who’s in the UK with his parents. I guess it’s as good a name as any! Calming Effect was yet another labour of love, also designed by Andy Dovell, which took Mac six years to build. Andy designed the hull and basic cabin outline, and the rest I made up as I went along. As the new tender takes shape, Mac is planning to add a robust fender system around the gunwales, of around 200mm deep. And there’ll be some sort of paint finish on the inside, seats, buoyancy tanks, and it has to be able to be rowed as well. All made up as I go along! See more
