25.01.2022 That Christmas Write Off for your Small Business Its that time of year again where it becomes very tempting to consider all the specials and bargains available in the Christmas and post-Christmas sales. Now, we are not advocating spending for spending’s sake, however you may have a need or desire for something that could be useful in your business and it just happens to be on sale!... How much could you claim as a small business owner Did you know that in May 2017, the government extended its instant write-off provision announced in the May 2016 budget to end June 2018? What does this mean for you the small business owner? You can claim an immediate write-off for the business portion of eligible purchases up to a maximum of $20,000 per item. The asset can be new or second hand, and you get to claim the deduction in the tax return of the year when the asset is available for use (generally the year of purchase). There are the usual details to be considered before rushing out and committing to that new car, phone, laptop or other business tool. Make sure you can afford any purchase and it is within your operating budget. Call or contact us to ask about what you should consider before you buy and to check that you are eligible. Importantly, this provision is for small business owners only, remember to check that you qualify as a small business entity

24.01.2022 Tax free gains If you run a small business you could be eligible to take advantage of the Small Business CGT (Capital Gains Tax) Concessions. A number of opportunities exist to allow deferment, significant reduction or complete exemption of profit on disposal of active business assets from capital gains tax. First port of call is to ensure eligibility, this is where the entry point becomes potentially complex and a guiding hand may be required. Once eligibility is met, there ...are a range of concessions that could be applied. For example, if eligibility is met, the 15 year exemption allows you to (if aged 55 or older and retiring or permanently incapacitated) not pay CGT on the sale of business (active) assets that you have owned for at least 15 years. There are generous concessions that could be used to minimise your CGT, our role is to assist and navigate you through any available concessions, contact us for more information The Small Business CGT Concession Explained | QuickBooks - http://bit.ly/2zaokIJ

23.01.2022 Negative gearing Put simply, negative gearing is where income from an investment does not cover the costs of holding the asset itself. Largely used by investors in building their property portfolios, you can also gear shares and other investments. Generally the loss created by negative gearing causes a tax deduction to arise, there are important limitations to be considered in determining if a loss can be claimed. There are many issues to consider in maximising taxation effic...iency including deciding the owner or ownership split of an asset, careful consideration of borrowings to be used and potential capital gains issues on sale. Not all assets will cause a tax loss, and recent changes to depreciation rules for investment properties also have to be accounted for. Contact us if you are considering negative gearing and we can assist with the taxation perspective. Please note that we do not provide financial advice and you should consider seeing a licenced planner to help you with your decision. See more

15.01.2022 In 1989 I read ‘About Face’, a defining book covering modern US military written by an intriguing individual, Col David Hackworth. I often recall elements of that book from a motivational perspective. Recently I was reminded of Col Hackworth’s review of Col Glover Johns philosophy on soldering (himself decorated WWII commander and author of ‘The Clay Pigeons of St Lo’). The link below outlines Col John’s 15 basic philosophies. Leaving aside any military aspect still allows fo...r an inspiration adjunct to thoughts on leadership 1. Strive to do small things well. 2. Be a doer and a self-starter-aggressiveness and initiative are two most admired qualities in a leader-but you must also put your feet up and THINK. 3. Strive for self-improvement through constant self-evaluation. 4. Never be satisfied. Ask of any project, How can it be done better? 5. Don't over-inspect or over-supervise. Allow your leaders to make mistakes in training, so they can profit from the errors and not make them in combat. 6. Keep the troops informed; telling them "what, how, and why" builds their confidence. 7. The harder the training, the more troops will brag. 8. Enthusiasm, fairness, and moral and physical courage - four of the most important aspects of leadership. 9. Showmanship-a vital technique of leadership. 10. The ability to speak and write well-two essential tools of leadership. 11. There is a salient difference between profanity and obscenity; while a leader employs profanity (tempered with discretion), he never uses obscenities. 12. Have consideration for others. 13. Yelling detracts from your dignity; take men aside to counsel them. 14. Understand and use judgement; know when to stop fighting for something you believe is right. Discuss and argue your point of view until a decision is made, and then support the decision wholeheartedly. 15. Stay ahead of your boss. David H. Hackworth - http://bit.ly/2xyumlT

The issue is to correctly determine the components of your cost base and amounts that need to be deducted from the sale price. There may also be elements that need to be added back if previously claimed (depreciation on rental properties as an example).
