25.01.2022 I have been working on a shallow water GPS fin for a while now. Due to the Victorian lockdown I can't test them myself but I have a 24cm proto on its way up to QLD and a couple of 16cm fins which I will send to some PiT Crew members next week. Since building those protos I have done a further small design upgrade and the 20cm design shown is being machined at the moment. It,s frustrating not being able to test them but at least I have more time for R&D.
25.01.2022 With more testing happenning and feedback from the customers I am really starting to get a bigger picture about fin vs Sail and board matches. We are all finding both the Weed Weapon and Weapon V2 to be very high lift allowing to go a size down on the fin than you would normally use For example on the masterblaster 66 I woud normally sail with a 36 when using a 7.0 meter but am finding the 34 V2 perfectly adequate. For a 6.3 I will use a 32. The guys in QLD who have been using the Weed weapons are going as small as 30cm with 110/115 litre boards and 7.7. So bear this in mind when ordering, of course we would love to chat with you anyway before you make your final choice.
24.01.2022 The new Atomicsurf hoody looks great, we might pay more for a decent model next time though. I am working on a Slalom/ speed design as well and once finished we will order some. Let us know if you are interested.
24.01.2022 The freestyle fins are off the mill at the suppliers, they just need to add the inserts and the covers are being printed. I will hand finish every fin when I receive them. Now for the name......Freestyle is a bit boring, maybe 'Da Bomb" ?
24.01.2022 A sidebar to this terrible Covid crisis has been a discussion in the media about Australian Manurfacturing. As somebody who has worked in manufacturing all my life I feel it is a long overdue discussion. In the Windsurfing industry unfortunately there is very little you can purchase that has been made here. One of my aims when I started this little Brand / Project was to support the local industry as much as possible and as such I have had prototypes built by nearly every c...ustom builder in the country as well as in NZ. My custom / production boards are now being built by 2 of the most respected custom brands on the globe, OES in Sth Australia and Carbon Art across the ditch in Taranaki, NZ. Yesterday I rode my Fusion 98, a manouver biased FSW board that is buit by OES. It is a bloody ripper!. Fast enough to thrill any FSW sailor, turns on rails but the most impressive feature is how comfortable it is in chop. The V and concave just part the waters and the 3 layer duel density pads cusion any shock. In short steep chop nothing upset the ride, I was so comfortable blasting along. I also love the fact that you can back off a bit and just cruise along happily for hours or if you feel inclined sheet in, get you weight out and it leaps onto its tail and flies like a slalom board. Super versitle and so much fun. The OES workmanship and construction is 2nd to none, they have been building boards for 30+ years and really know thier s..t. I am sure some of you are thinking about a new board soon. If you are after a versitle, exciting and fun FSW board we beleive we have the perfect solution. Designed and built in Australia and and an added bonus is we can do some customisation and personalisation if you wish making your board a unique classic. And if you are after something super fast our Masterblaster and Weapon boards built by CarbonArt are just an awesome thrill to ride. In a few weeks time we are also doing a small run of Tshirts, Hoodies and beanies featuring some cool Windsurfing images. We have sourced all the garments through Australian print companies and not held back on the quality. The tshirts are super comfy and durable and the Hoodies the same plus really warm and cosy. My daughters and I are living in the pre production samples and just dont want to take them off. They will be available very soon. So a call out to all the Aussie Windsurfers. Remember we do have local custom board builders here in Australia. Next purchase please put them on your list. Of couse we would love you to consider one of our boards but at least look into what is available from our amazingly skilled craftsman. We can assure you you will not regret your choice. Thanks Martin
24.01.2022 What is shown here are the only fins left from the last production build. I have a small shipment of prototypes and pre-sold fins coming very soon and will be placing a new stock order in the next couple of weeks. Due to the Covid slowdown i do not anticipate having that until September. If you are interested in one of these remaining fins I would grab one soon. I will also include one of our new beanies while I still have some as a sweetener... Of the 8 remaining fins th...ere are.... Weapon Slalom Tuttle Box, one each, 40cm, 38cm, 36cm and 34cm. These fins are getting super encouraging reviews from those using them, distance legend Craig Hollins can't speak highly enough about his 28cm. Then there is 1x Masterblaster GPS fin, a 30cm Powerbox. Personally this is my favorite fin for the blasting I do on Port Phillip Bay, fast, reliable and easy. Its perfectly suited to Slalom and Freerace boards used in open water or choppy inland conditions. Last up is the 3 remaining Fusion Frewave fins. I have sold a bunch of these to sailors using Severne Dynos and Fanatic Stubbies when they use the boards in single fin mode. These boards can be a bit prone to ventilation issues with single fins due to the rearward fin location. The Fusion fins are proving to be a huge hit in particular for these boards but will also be the perfect upgrade for any Freestyle Wave or manouvre oriented freeride board. Please contact me at [email protected] if you are interested. Thanks Martin
22.01.2022 https://www.youtube.com/watch I lent my 20cm Delta Prototype to Speed Sailing Legend Andrew Daff. He took it for spin in some pretty choppy conditions and was very impressed in how well it gripped for a Delta with only a hint of spinout when pushing hard upwind at low speed, something Delta fins all struggle with. Some new samples coming very shortly for more testing.
22.01.2022 I just received an email from one of my repeat fin customers, Matthew. I am so pleased to know that people are enjoying my fins. Hi Martin, As usual the fin is great. It’s a big upgrade.... Compared to the stock: its faster, you can push way harder without spinout, even when landing funny off the back of chop. It also flies the board nicely but isn’t terrifying, and still gybes fine. Only negative compared to stock is slightly reduced upwind pointing when semi powered, but could that just be the reduced surface area near the base (since its a lot better than stock when adequately powered)? Its now my go to 100% of the time. ocean, lake, wherever. Im really happy with it. Thanks. Id say you can seriously improve boards like the starship, JP super ride, fanatic blast (all of the 95-120L parallel rail freerides) with a master blaster fin. Everyone should consider doing this Well thank you for the words Matthew and I am so glad that I can contribute to you further enjoying your windsurfing sessions.
20.01.2022 A small animation explaining the Weed Weapon Weed fin.
20.01.2022 A short slide show explaining our new Atomicsurf Shockwave fin
20.01.2022 The Shockwave has hit Melbourne!!! The first batch of shockwave fins have arrived from our supplier Naked Viking Surf in California. I am loving the fin covers in Shocking Pink!! This is an awesome alround Wave fin with heaps of grip as well as being fast and really forgiving of mistakes. Built in Black G10 and every fin will be handfinished by me before shipping. Sizes 15 cm through to 25cm in 2cm incraments, US box which is convertable to slot box. If you order slot box... the conversion will be done before sending. They are ready to purchase now so don't hessitate to contact me if you are interested. Thanks Martin
20.01.2022 Another Tshirt, this one features a photograph of KA / Flikka rider Martin ten Hoeve, the awesome photograph is from Sara Sandahl. We are ordering a run of Tshirts and hoodies this week of the other 2 designs and will get a few samples of this one to see how it prints and put it through the wringer. All the T shirt and hoodies will be on the website very soon!!
19.01.2022 I have further updated the fin page and added a link to a bit of info about how we design the fins. If you are interested. https://www.atomicwindsurf.com/fin-r-d
19.01.2022 The fin page has just been updated to show the full 2021 range, Still under development is the "Ground Zero" shallow water weed speed / gps fin and our freestyle fin, more news on these soon. I am hoping for stock of most fins by the end of September but it is only a small orderr so I would reserve a fin soon so as not to miss out. https://www.atomicwindsurf.com/fins
14.01.2022 Chalk and cheese....The fin with the greasy finger marks on it is a prototype big 'Ground zero" weed fin. 50 degree rake and this 25cm has the same area as a 46 cm slalom fin. I am sending it up to Qld tomorrow for testing as I cant see us windsurfing in Melbourne for at least another month. In contrast the other one is an experimental super high aspect fin. This 44 has the same area as a 40 Slalom. It will be interesting to see how it works.
13.01.2022 It is certainly time in the Southern hemispher to be thinking about updated your board for the coming season. We are also accutely aware of how Covid 19 is devistating small business both here in Australia but also over the ditch in NZ with a new outbreak of this terible infection. Atomicsurf boards are built by 2 of the worlds premier board craftsmen, one in South Australia and the other in Taranaki NZ, being OES and Carbonart. OES are buiding out Fusion freewave Boards. I... will be honest with you, I have ridden many FSW boards over the years and had some favorites, my 2010 RRD being a standout. However the lastest version of the Fusion eclipses them all, it is just pure FUN. Its V, concave and rocker line ensure a fast, smooth ride in any conditions and the spiral V in the tail allows you to turn the board through a huge variety of radii, from long slalom like carves to slashy tight transitions. The Swallow tail gives full rail engagement and huge grip. Superbly crafted by OES in a combination of Carbon, innegra and S glass over a corecell shell the construction is both light and inceadibly duarable. All boards come with a set of our Shock wave fins. As I said...these boards are just FUN!!! Over the ditch Carbonart are building our Weapon and Masterblaster Slalom / GPS boards. I must admit to my love affair with the Masterblaster. I designed this board for the sailing I do a lot of, blasting in choppy water and it just works!!! Lock the sail down, stretch your arms out and hang on for an amazing ride. Its extremely fast and smooth yet still really engaging and exciting to ride. A magic board. The Weapon slalom with less V and concave is a little more technical to ride in comparison but man are they fast. These boards are no compromise and built for speed junkies. Carboart needs no introduction as they have been designing and building world class products for many, many years. Both these boards are built in a combination of carbon and S glass for the perfect comination of weight, stiffness and durability. So rather than buying a board from an Asian factory why not consider supporting our regional small custom builders and grab one of these super boards.
11.01.2022 Happy new year to everybody and appologies that it has been I while since I updated what was going on in Atomicsurfland. Firstly I have been very busy finishing fins and getting them to customers. I hugely appreciate everybody's support, not easy to get a new venture off the ground and it won't happen without some people taking the leap and purchasing one of my fins. For those who have...thank you so much. The Freestyle fins are here and the local crew are putting them thro...ugh their paces. I am getting fantastic feedback regarding the performance which is so gratifying. So freestylers of the world....I would love you to try a fin. The Fusion Freewave continues to be a standout with great feedback from happy sailors all telling me how good it is. Spotti has been using the Weed weapons at Lake George this week and they are working great....I beleive he did a 44 knot plus yesterday. On the R&D front there has been quite a bit happening. I have received the first samples of a fin I have been messing around with. Its a 30 degree Symetrical speed fin and I intend to do sizes up to 30cm so it can be used on small slalom boards as well as speed boards. The samples are in white G10 as I really liked the colour on the freestyle fins but I am thinking I will stick with natural..the white doesn't look as fast! We also have which is hopefully the final iteration of the semi delta 50 degree weed fin prototypes being built. Andrew Daff and myself were testing an earlier iteration at Lake George this week and are very happy. These will be better. So again happy new year and I would love to help yo out with a fin or 2 in 2021. Thanks Martin
11.01.2022 I have just updated the Fin page to include the new Freestyle fin. Its proving to be a great success with the Melbourne crew, it would be great to for a few more of you to try it out, I am confident you will love it. https://www.atomicwindsurf.com/fins Thanks Martin
10.01.2022 Our plan is to do a run of T shirts and Hoodies based on these 2 designs in July. A massive thank you to photographers Hylke Knot and Dannie Connolly for allowing thier fantastic photographs to be used. Next month we will build a web shop so all the details will be up there when finished. Some new Fin designs as well.
08.01.2022 Well its winter here in Australia and we are rugging up for those epic winter sessions and starting to think about the upcoming skiing and boarding. To keep us all comfy I have done a really small run of beanies featuring a variation on the Atomicsurf logo which was designed by my daughter. 50% NZ Wool and Acrylic blend and embroidered in Australia they are super warm. Grab one before they go...$24.95 post included in OZ, just give us a PM or email.
08.01.2022 The first trickle of Atomicsurf Weapon Slalom Version 2 have arrived. I am just in awe of how great they are, just looking at them will make you faster! Brilliant build from our partners at Tribal again. The 42's are sold as with 1 of each the 28 and 30. Jump in quick to grab the reamaining fins. The bulk of the order should be here soon.
08.01.2022 Do you have a Severne Dyno, Fanatic Freewave or similar? Like running it single fin? You need one of these..... I currently have stock, 24, 26,28 and 30 in PB and 30 in US. This fin has proven to be the perfect upgrade for Freestyle wave boards, fast and spinout resistant yet doesn't stiffen up the board, it carves like a dream. Grab one now.....
06.01.2022 A lovely day in Melbourne, 26C and 20-25 knots. We are still very restricted but are allowed to exercise outdoors for 2 hrs if it is less than 5km from your home. Fortunately I am near the beach so had a very fun session this morning. I was swapping between the Fusion 61 and an early prototype of the Fusion 64. The latest Fusion is a special board, I just love it. Although it is a bit cringy pumping up my own design I can't help it as I have absolutely nailed this one. Are... you looking for a new FSW board ? you honestly have to consider the Fusion...Peter at OES would love to build you one. The Shock Wave fins are working great. I contacted Naked Viking Surf to see how the production run is going and unfortuanately they said they were still 3 weeks away. Longer than they had originally said and longer than I had hoped so if you are waiting for a fin I appologise for the delay but hang in there, it will be worth it. Thanks Martin
06.01.2022 The flock of fins has expanded with some new arrivals from The Netherlands. So they are looking for speed freaks to give them a good home. What I have in stock is Version 1 Weapon Slalom 1x38cm and 1X40cm both Tuttle and 20% off.... Version 2 Weapon Slalom 1x32 TB 2x34 TB 1x36 TB 3x40 TB 2x44 DTB Masterblaster Freerace 2x34 TB 1x34 PB 1x38 PB Weed Weapon 1x22 TB 4x28 TB 2x32 TB 1x36 TB Freewave 1x24 PB 1x30 PB More Freewave fins will be here next week and I am really hoping the Shockwave fins will follow the week after. So please give me a yell if you are after some awesome fins. As you can see some sizes are already gone so grab one before somebody else does. Thanks Martin
06.01.2022 The first production run of the Freewave and side fins have arrived from the supplier in China.. Freewave 24, 26, 28 and 30 Powerbox and side fin pairs, 9cm, 10cm, 11cm and 12cm Slot box. We ordered the Wave, Freewave and side fins without the final finishing sand so every fin will be personally finished by me before being shipped. Hopefully the Shockwave fins are not too far away.
06.01.2022 There is no argument that the latest Carbon Slalom fins are fantastic products and offer some real advantages over traditional G10 construction. However we strongly believe that G10 Slalom fins remain relevant, especially in the smaller lengths and themselves offer some real advantages over Carbon fins. The cons are G10 are the weight, the fact that flex can only be controlled with cross section and that fins larger than 44 start to get too soft which can cause cotrol issues.... The pros though compelling.....cost, durability and ease of repair being the big ones. There is another big pro for G10 and that the flexability of the construction method and the ease of continuous R&D. With molded Carbon fins companies have a big commitment in tooling and the business cases rely on getting a certain number of fins from a set of tools. This has 2 negative side effects. Firstly many companies have 1 tool which makes the longest fin and all subsequent sizes are cut down versions of this. Clearly this means that the outline of each fin size is constrained by that tool and no size is 100% optimised for the conditions of use. It also means that R&D becomes a costly exercise so in many cases it happens infrequently or constained to playing with layup only.. With the Atomicsurf G10 fins we are constantly doing R&D and have the ability to make changes every time we CNC a fin. That means our customers get those incremental improvements immeadiately. CNC also gives us the ability to have a different outline or foil section for every size which is 100% optimised for the conditions it is used in. Our V2 Weapon slalom is the result of that constant R&D. Although the version1 fin was being contantly tweaked and is a fabulous fin we wanted to change our design brief slightly for the V2. It uses the same base foil profile, as much as we tried we just could not improve it, however the outline, the surface area and area disribution has changed. Our aim was a little more lift especially in the larger sizes so that the fin could unstick the board and have it flying off the tail a bit earlier than the version 1. You will see that 2 thirds of the way down the chord of the fin remains generous then tapers to the tip. This gives more lift and the subltle concave trailing edge has enabled us to do this without adding too much overall surface area keeping the fin super fast and slippery.. We have a small run of fins being built at the moment, 2 of each size, 28 to 44 in 2cm increments, tuttle only except for the 44 which is deep tuttle. They should be available mid September. Don't hessitate to contact us if interested to ensure you dont miss out getting a V2 fin from this first build !!
03.01.2022 Some new toys have arrived. A couple of the final production Weed Weapon fins and as usual the build quality from the Tribal team is superb. These fins will be the ducks guts for sailing in floating weed with a rake angle of 44 degrees on the 38cm through to 45 degrees on the 20cm. They will be available in 2cm increments. The second fin is a prototype "Ground Zero" semi delta designed for shallow water. Rake angle of 50 degrees and this one is a 16cm. I am yet to decide the ...size range. A production order went in last week for a small amount of stock of both the Weed weapon and our Weapon Slalom fins, so we should be able to meet your needs when we get them. We also have a few Masterblasters left. On the Wave fin front I am just finalising a production order of the Shock Wave fins, really excired about these and will also be placing an order for a run of Fusion freeride fins very shortly. The fusions are proving to be "da Bomb" in Freestyle Wave boards with glowing reviews from customers. Exciting times! See more
02.01.2022 Groove along to an overview of oour new slalom fin
01.01.2022 Being a Designer can often be frustrating, the project you are working on comes to nothing, people don't like your designs or ideas just don't translate. Contrasting that though sometimes your efforts and persistance pay off in spades and you create something special. Today I had a Windsurf session on gear I have designed, a brand new KA Kamikaze 4.7, Atomicsurf Fusion 61 with Atomic surf Shockwave fins fitted 21 center and 12 sides. It was one of those sessions where the gear was working so well and so efficiently that you hardly noticed it was there. The sail pulled like a train but was so stable. The board just blasted through the chop and felt like it was on rails through the gybes. I didn't notice the fins as they just did their job so well. One of those magic sessions on really good gear. Fun times.
01.01.2022 Some new Shock wave fin samples arrived today ready for on water testing. Trying black FR4 material for these, looks pretty cool. Plan is to have production ready fins for the start of the Aus season.
