20.01.2022 **Update on Post: The clip featured on this post has been cut from a full-length episode of the Perspective Shift documentary series about Prue Stevenson and her journey as an artist and an autistic woman. In this clip Prue describes how early in life she was told to watch and copy how people behave in order to fit in with society. Later in the episode Prue explores how this has impacted her in different ways, and the harm caused by misguided efforts to "normalise" autist...ic people. Prues sketches of people on trams inspired her to pursue a life of as an artist, and fully embrace her authentic self, the Prue version of autism. However, we acknowledge that in cutting this clip to promote the episode, this message has not been adequately captured and we appreciate the feedback we have received about it. For transparency and in order to respond to concerns, we have left this post up, with this update. However we are not proposing to share this clip again in the current form. 17.01.2022 After being told by an acting school that there would be no career options for a person with disability in the film and television industry, Daniel Monks, wrote, produced and starred in his international award-winning film Pulse and in 2019 was nominated for the Best Actor in a Feature Film award at the AACTA awards. Despite the limiting attitudes and barriers to opportunity Daniel faced when embarking on his dream, he created something amazing and was recognised for it but those limiting attitudes and barriers still exist for so many people with disability and we are working to change that! 09.01.2022 We shared Actor Daniel Monks' story in season one of Perspective Shift. In this clip, Daniel speaks to the important role that media plays in shaping community attitudes for people with and without disability, a topic we are incredible passionate about! 09.01.2022 "It is strikingly (depressingly) rare to have two disabled characters interact in a story where their disabilities dont account for why they know each other: Richard and Buck just happen to go to the same high school." Being part of a minority that is not often represented, somehow your character has to be an ambassador for your minority which often leads to bland characters and bland storytelling, points out Monks, who was bored of getting offered just very sweet, pure... parts which Richard certainly isnt. By having dual narratives, and dual experiences of disability that are so starkly contrasted, it takes the burden off of having to represent the disability community. - Daniel Monks A great article by BBC Culture and perfect discussion to be having on International Day of People with Disability - Australia! 09.01.2022 The Disability Royal Commission is an important part of ensuring that people with disability can live their lives in safety. Its outcomes will hopefully change the lives of Australian's with disability and spark a change in attitudes. The way the media reports on the Disability Royal Commission is also important. 06.01.2022 As Attitude Foundation embarks on the next phase of our approach to revolutionise Australian media to be more inclusive of people with disability, we also welcome a new CEO. Matthew Field comes to Attitude Foundation with a wealth of knowledge and experience in media production and distribution and is ready to get stuck into changing attitudes. 05.01.2022 As we experience this extraordinary time together, we are thinking of the people who are battling to access basic supports and thankful for the strong activist community who are working to ensure that people with disability are thought of and included in decision and policy making at this time. As you know, season one of our documentary series, Perspective Shift was released on SBS Australia and SBS On Demand last year. Following the success of season one, we had begun pre-p...roduction for our second series - enter COVID - 19. In light of the current pandemic, we have suspended filming until further notice as the health and safety of all participants and crew is paramount. Once filming can recommence, we look forward to delivering another season of Perspective Shift that shapes a new understanding of disabilty in Australia. Whilst filming is suspended, Attitude Foundation continues to explore and develop other formats and platforms to create content that drives real change. In 2020, audiences are consuming content in a range of different ways and Attitude Foundation aims to develop more impactful content in as many different ways as possible including accessible content produced by people with disability for social media, podcasts and vodcasts. In the coming months, we will launch our online resources portal, providing information and data on inclusive media production, content and distribution. If you haven't checked it out season one of Perspective Shift it is still available on SBS On Demand.
