24.01.2022 Around Australia tens of thousands of people live in communities near coal ash dumps -- giant ponds used to store the ash left after coal is burnt. On the NSW Central Coast residents are concerned that the unlined ponds -- built over 50 years ago to store ash from nearby Vales Point and Eraring power stations -- are contaminating their water, soil and air with toxic chemicals and heavy metals and putting their health at risk.
24.01.2022 The NSW town of Tathra was devastated by a savage bushfire in 2018. Now the community is bouncing back with plan for 100% renewable energy for the town by 2030. This Sunday, a sold-out event in the town will raise funds to start building community-owned solar facilities to reach their target. They're starting with rooftop solar for the AFL and cricket clubs. There are plans for a solar farm that will power the town and funnel profits back into the community. That’s a win for everyone. https://www.begadistrictnews.com.au//eternity-festival-se/
22.01.2022 Australia’s biggest super fund Australian Super has announced it plans to dump its investments in fossil fuels and will transition its portfolio to 100% net-zero emissions by 2050. The super fund, which has over 2 million members, is just the latest in a long line of financial organisations who are rapidly moving away from coal. They know that coal’s falling price and inability to compete with cheaper renewable energy is just too much of a financial risk. The global transition beyond coal is well and truly underway.
20.01.2022 Nice one NSW! After a marathon 30 hour-long debate, NSW’s new Renewable Energy Plan just passed Parliament and will now become law. The plan will create more than 9,000 new jobs, drive investment into the state and modernise our electricity system with clean, renewable energy. Plus, it will give NSW residents access to some of the cheapest power in the country and supercharge our economy for a faster, clean COVID recovery. Decision-makers across the country will be watching closely tonight to see how the public responds to this plan. We need to make sure that they get a clear message that Australians want to see more exciting and ambitious renewable energy policy like this, from all levels of Government. Help spread the word and share your message of thanks at http://www.thanksnsw.com
15.01.2022 The good news keeps coming! Today, the Victorian Government announced $1.6 billion in budget funding to make the state a Renewable Energy Powerhouse. The plan includes establishing six new renewable energy zones throughout Victoria, that will create 24,000 new jobs, inject $5.8 billion into the economy by 2030 and generate enough clean, renewable energy to power 350,000 homes. ... Plus, as part of the plan all the state government's operations, including offices, schools and public transport, will be powered by 100% renewable energy. That means lower power prices and more reliable energy for Victorian families and business. And puts us another step closer to a future powered by 100% clean, renewable energy.
14.01.2022 Sun Metals is one of the biggest energy users in the country, and it just announced it will go 100% renewable by 2040 In the words of the CEO: the more we all move towards 100% renewable, the more we can save money and create a cleaner future for Australia’s industry and the environment. Great news!
12.01.2022 This year, we all saw first hand the devastating impact that climate change and global warming is having on our country. It’s making our weather more extreme and unpredictable and supercharging events like droughts, bushfires and floods, including the most devastating fire season in our history. Now, just over a year on from our Black Summer, experts are again warning us that we are facing another summer of above-average bushfire risk. After a year of lower than average rain...fall and warmer temperatures in places like NSW, VIC and WA. We know the only way to stop our extreme weather from worsening is to cut our carbon emissions urgently and dramatically, starting with our number source of emissions: coal power. Replacing coal power with clean, renewable alternatives, like wind and solar, would cut our emissions by a quarter and reduce the risk of future catastrophic weather events. It’s time to move Australia beyond coal. https://www.youtube.com/watch
05.01.2022 This is how the toxins in coal pollution and coal ash affect your body and your health. Dozens of different toxins -- including heavy metals such as mercury and lead, and noxious gases like nitrous dioxide and sulphur dioxide -- are emitted when coal is burnt to generate electricity. Many of these toxins have been linked to serious health conditions including heart and lung disease, asthma, kidney disease, stroke and cancer. Research from Greenpeace earlier this year found ...approximately 800 Australians die prematurely every year as a result of exposure to toxic pollution from coal power stations. Replacing dirty, polluting coal with clean, renewable alternatives is not just a great move for our planet, it will also improve the health and quality of life of many Australians.
05.01.2022 Communities near coal-fired power stations are experiencing the health impacts of toxic pollutants in the air they breathe. Studies have linked 600 cases of childhood asthma with the high levels of nitrogen oxides emitted by power stations near Lake Macquarie Now, community groups like Future Sooner are calling on the government to protect their health by lowering the level of these toxins power stations are allowed to emit, by enforcing stricter pollution controls and requir...ing stations to adopt technologies such as air filters to stop harmful toxins from contaminating the air. 05.01.2022 The numbers are staggering. Each year Australia’s coal power stations emit over 130 million tonnes of carbon, about 25% of Australia’s total carbon footprint. That’s more carbon than every single car on our roads and more emissions than the entire carbon footprints of over 140 countries! ... The best way to reduce our carbon emissions enough to have a measurable impact on global warming and stop worsening climate change is to replace our polluting coal-fired power stations with cleaner energy alternatives, like solar and wind. We must move Australia beyond coal.
02.01.2022 Despite our Federal Government's inaction on climate change and energy transition, there are hundreds of renewable energy projects in the pipeline around Australia, including major projects designed to build us into the world's first Renewable Energy Superpower -- exporting clean, renewable energy around the world. One such project, the Asian Renewable Energy Hub, a gigantic solar and wind farm project planned for the Pilbara region in WA, will generate more electricity than ...the entirety of Australia's existing coal power fleet. The power generated by the 1,600 giant wind turbines and 78 sq km of solar panels will be used to convert seawater to green hydrogen. A clean fuel that could be exported globally, and used to replace polluting fossil fuels, like coal and gas, in heavy industry, manufacturing and transport. Other projects could see kilometres of undersea cable laid between Australia and our neighbours Singapore and Indonesia, in order to supply them with clean energy generated using our abundant natural resources of wind and sun. These exciting and innovative projects, and the expansion of Australia's renewable energy sector, are not just great for reducing emissions and helping to stop worsening climate change. They will also create thousands of new jobs, and reduce energy and production costs for many Australian businesses, which will keep our products globally competitive and grow our economy.
02.01.2022 ICYMI: Here’s a great read for your Saturday morning! A Joe Biden Presidency could mean Australia becomes more isolated on climate action than ever, as one of a handful of American allies without ambitious climate policies. Mr Biden has made climate action a priority of his Presidency, including pledging to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, spend USD $1.7 trillion to fight climate change, and to stop other countries - like Australia - from cheating on their climate agreemen...ts. While it’s true that the US has fallen behind on climate action during the Trump Presidency, Biden’s progressive climate policy is a great reminder that when enough people get together to demand more ambition from our leaders, we can win real action to curb climate change. Your move Australian politicians.
