24.01.2022 Smoke alarms... often one of the electrical devices we forget about in our homes! However they play such an important role in the first response to a property fire. So its crucial that we continue to talk about the importance of smoke alarms in both residential and commercial properties! So why are smoke alarms really that important? ... When you are asleep you lose your sense of smell. A working smoke alarm is your electronic nose and will alert you if there is smoke from a fire. A small fire can grow to involve an entire room in two to three minutes. If you do not have working smoke alarms you are 26% more likely to suffer serious injuries and 4 times more likely to die So in summary, smoke alarms truly are SUPER important! So what about testing smoke alarms, replacing old ones and how do you protect them? How often should you test your smoke alarm? Each smoke alarm should be tested once every month to ensure that the battery is not dead and that the alarm is operating properly. To test your smoke detector, hold down the test button until you hear a loud alert tone. What to do with old smoke alarms? Smoke alarms that have been installed prior to 2014 are most likely not up to date with the current standard. These are the minimum fire standards that properties need to meet to provide adequate protection in the event of a fire starting. We recommend upgrading to photoelectric smoke alarms - and be sure to talk to us about these! Protect your smoke alarms from infestations Using a surface insect spray around each of the smoke alarms in your home can be a good way to help prevent insects from nesting inside; however, when spraying around smoke alarms, make sure they are covered to prevent spraying inside of them.
