07.01.2022 Some beautiful images by Art Atelier Photography from last weekend's performance of Canberra Dance Theatre - CDT's In the Spirit presented in partnership with Ausdance ACT and Contour 556. In the Spirit featured 16 members of CDT’s GOLD and REVEL performance groups, directed by Jacqui Simmonds and Philip Piggin with original music by Teresa Wojcik. The work was inspired by the life of Marion Mahony Griffin and her contribution to the design of Canberra her irrepressible nat...ure and indomitable spirit. The work explores themes of relationships: between nature and the built environment; between the woman and her more famous husband; between ideals for a better world sacrificed in grabs for power. In the Spirit was performed on and around Fiona Hooton’s sculpture, Ziggurat, a straw bale construction located on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin, as part of the Contour 556 2020 Festival, Canberra’s Public Art Biennial. #cbrarts #cbrdance #contour556

02.01.2022 We are pleased to announce the first recipient of our Small Grants Fund, local multidisciplinary artist, Jake Silvestro. Jake will be using the funds towards production costs for the development of his first solo show, 'December'. Combining visual art and circus, December presents a fictional future that is fast becoming our realistic present. Exploring themes of loss and isolation, and the consequences of Australia’s bushfires, Silvestro looks for hope amid a scene of ash an...d rubble. Speaking to the resilience of a country hit hard during the ongoing climate crisis, this enthralling new work prompts reflection on our actions and aspirations for an uncertain future. Jake Silvestro has spent the last decade working for the biggest names in Australian Circus (Circus OZ, CIRCA, Casus, Company 2 and more). His acrobatic endeavours have taken him from Bogota to Berlin and now in 2020 he is back in Australia with his first solo work. Diving back into his independent practice, Jake is working to bring a new style of circus to Australian stages that prioritises sincerity, honesty and narrative exploration. Ausdance ACT's Small Grants Fund has been established to provide inclusive one-off financial assistance to local dancers, both emerging and established experiencing negative impacts on their dance activities as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. For more information or to apply visit https://www.ausdanceact.org.au/ausdance-act-small-grants-fu
