17.01.2022 Although ... is four cloves enough?

13.01.2022 Hi Garlic Lovers ... as growers ourselves, we are really feeling the pain of our fellow farmers over this difficult season. Not only for growing, but for selling. We received this message and wondering if anyone can help with suggestions. "Justin and Yvette from East Gippsland Garlic in Nicholson Victoria. We have survived the fires so far. We have had fire to our boundary fence and a few neighbouring properties have been burnt out. We have pulled our entire Monaro purple... crop out from under the house where it was cured and it’s all in a pile in the shed. I now have a full piled 6x4 trailer load of our garlic and have no idea what to do with it as most of the local markets are shut down and the tourists have all been told to stay away. It’s great garlic albeit a little on the small side with average bulbs of between 35 and 60 grams as it was our first year growing. What a year we picked to grow garlic..... Please if you have any ideas how I could sell the garlic I do have it would be appreciated."

09.01.2022 As we approach planting season it's easy to get confused over what you want to buy for planting with so many growers personally naming their garlic rather than seeking out the official name ... this is a fabulous website, put together by Penny Woodward, to help identify what you want to grow (or are already growing) https://www.australiangarlic.net.au/

07.01.2022 With a background in agronomy, and growing at a commercial scale, Kevin shares his soil preparation processes for growing garlic. 04.01.2022 John Olliff, AGIA President gives an update on his Garlic crop as at the end of September 2020 Our crop is growing well, the plants are out of winter dormancy and have taken on a deep healthy green. About this time of the year we see rapid growth in terms of height and stem width. At this stage we need to ensure adequate soil moisture is available and have already irrigated a couple of weeks ago, since then we have had small amounts of rain but I think we are looking at a dr...y season ahead. Whilst the crop mostly does its own thing, we have turned in green manure crops on our 2021 and 2022 sites and also added 100 ton of compost to the 2021 site Left to right Turning in Compost Compost is our primary soil additive, this year we turned in 100ton with a rotary hoe before planting a summer pasture crop. The site will be used for our 2021 garlic planting Turning in green manure After harvesting on this site in 2019 we planted a green manure crop at the first Autumn break. This was mulched and turned in with a mouldboard plough and will be used for garlic in 2022.

04.01.2022 A Festival of GARLIC!

03.01.2022 David Jones has been on the board of the AGIA since 2018. In 2011, David and his wife Kirsten began growing garlic at Mirboo farm in South Gippsland, Victoria. In 2017, David co-founded the incredibly successful Meeniyan Garlic Festival. Each month the AGIA board share their garlic growing reports with AGIA members in the minutes of their meeting, but this month David shares his 'How's your Crop' status report with you on facebook.

03.01.2022 Fast forward from when I last posted Kevin's crop (18th march 2020). This is the result of good soil preparation, and the beginnings of the next garlic crop.

03.01.2022 Anna of Wildes Lane is the AGIA Treasurer and the most awarded Garlic grower in the Australian Food Awards competition. In the month of August Anna is planting staged, spring trials (including Glazed Purple Stripes, Rocamboles and Standard Purple Stripes in addition to Creoles and Silverskins) and bulbil sowing - all groups. Pictured are Anna's Gazed Purple Stripe bulbils

02.01.2022 For many Garlic Growers the crops are in! Here's a very happy group of harvesters with an empty paddock behind them.
