25.01.2022 "A former Victorian Supreme Court judge has blasted Tasmania's anti-corruption watchdog, saying the Integrity Commission's ineffectiveness has hoodwinked Tasmanian politicians into believing the state is free of wrongdoing," writes Rob Inglis in The Advocate newspaper. "Together with prominent Hobart lawyer Roland Browne, David Harper AM QC has today launched a new report from think tank The Australia Institute Tasmania, which seeks to shine a light on deficiencies in political accountability and transparency in Tasmania." https://www.theadvocate.com.au//tasmanias-anti-corruption/

20.01.2022 "Rather than this concern about re-opening the state borders to re-start the economy -- what if we looked at it the other way around?" said Leanne Minshull, director of The Australia Institute Tasmania, on ABC Hobart. "Imagine if we were one of the only places on earth that were COVID free, and started from that perspective ... I think that thought exercise could go on, if we had a little more transparency."

15.01.2022 "Tasmania is desperately in need of political reform to improve accountability and transparency, the Australia Institute says," writes David Killick via The Mercury Newspaper "Releasing a report entitled Good Government in Tasmania, the Institute has called for a suite of improvements to the laws governing electoral donations, Right to Information requests and the state’s Integrity Commission. "The report has the endorsement of former Victorian Supreme Court judge David Harper QC, who says Tasmania is kidding itself if it believes it is corruption-free."

14.01.2022 After reopening pokies on 26 June, Tassie losses were over $2.6 million in 5 days - $525,000 per day, which was 25% higher than the per day losses in March 2020... before lockdown. Rushing to switch on pokies under pressure from vested interests was the wrong decision. Premier Gutwien has put vulnerable Tasmanians at higher risk. They should be switched back off until our COVID-19 health, social and economic conditions have stabilised. See my full media release https://megwebb.com.au/media-release-poker-machine-losses-/

09.01.2022 In the middle of this unprecedented health and economic crisis, it is critical we do not let a crisis in our democracy emerge as well. Add your name to the call: Tasmania needs proper Parliamentary scrutiny of COVID-19 decisions > https://theaus.in/COVID19_Parliament_Tas Today, a prominent group of Tasmanian individuals and organisations, convened by The Australia Institute Tasmania, called for the establishment of a multi-party parliamentary oversight committee to ensure ade...quate scrutiny of the COVID-19 response while the Tasmanian Parliament is not sitting. Such a body has already been established in New Zealand to help fill the accountability gap. Known as the Epidemic Response Committee, it is an all-party special select committee with similarly broad powers as those of a Privileges Committee regarding calling witnesses and the provision of documents. The select committee was set up by consensus with all parties represented, and hearings are publicly broadcast. When the Tasmanian Parliament is recalled, we would urge the government to immediately establish a multi-party select committee to enable scrutiny of the various Government programs dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.
