Here he is at the building site of Loyola College Kasait with Fr Phil Crotty SJ, donning a Boston College cap!... 25.01.2022 Today is the Feast Day of 16th century Jesuit scholar and martyr, Saint Edmund Campion. In the latest instalment of the Jesuit vocations’ series on Jesuit Saints and Blesseds, Isaac Demase SJ explores the life of Saint Edmund and his incredible confidence in God, as expressed in what later became known as 'Campion's brag'.

In the fourth instalment of this year’s series, criminal defence lawyer and Xavier parent Nicole Spicer interviews Patrick Allen, an Old Xaverian and criminal defence lawyer who has previously worked with @Jesuit Social Services as an outreach worker and now represents children and young adults in the crimin...al justice system. Patrick, who is also a qualified social worker, will discuss some of the issues that young people in the criminal justice system often endure in their lives, share his hopes for an improved system that is therapeutic and rehabilitative, and explore what those structures and changes may look like. 24.01.2022 25 November is the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, emerging data and reports from those on the front lines have shown that all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, have intensified. @Jeesuit Refugee Service Australia’s Finding Safety project offers safety and leadership opportunities for women on temporary protection visas at risk of gender-based violence. This includes ...women seeking asylum who have experienced sexual and gender-based violence or are at risk of it. The program uses participatory leadership approaches for prevention and early intervention and has provided much needed telephone-based support services as well as financial and material aid to women during the pandemic. Find out more about the project and the JRSA Women’s Space at the link below #GenerationEquality #orangetheworld #16days #spreadtheword
24.01.2022 Congratulations to Anakin from Jesuit school St Aloysius' College on taking out the prize in the Secondary Schools Division of the MobileMuster Film Competition, which gives students a platform to investigate an environmental issue, bring their films to life and afford them an opportunity to share their voice with a wider audience. The video, through the Spoken Word art form, carries a very Ignatian message about the need to care for our common home.
24.01.2022 Care for our common home and accompanying the marginalised are important areas of focus for Jesuits both here in Australia and around the world. Too often it is those at the margins who suffer the most acutely when care for God’s creation is sacrificed in the quest for material gain. This prayer from Oceania and Asia draws on the beauty and gifts of this part of the world which we call home and inspires us to do more to show our gratitude for the incredible gifts bestowed on our beautiful region.

With your continued advocacy and support for the publication, the future again looks bright. 21.01.2022 Published by La Civiltà Cattolica, Mission in Asia consists of eight thought-provoking, long narrative essays, 7 of them by Jesuits, focusing on the history and challenges of Christianity in Asia, especially in China and Japan. The publication helps readers understand the meaning of the Church's presence in Asia and offers insights into the great love and profound esteem of the Catholic Church for the cultures she meets there. UCA News offers a complimentary copy of this publication to its supporters. You can donate and receive your copy at the link below!
20.01.2022 It’s striking that while harvest rituals and their accompanying wreaths have largely gone, the funeral and advent wreaths remain as strong as ever. During Advent, the wreath entwines both ideas: the completion of our life-long journey; along with the final unveiling, or the apocalypse, of Christ. In celebration of the season of Advent, we invite you to share in this series of reflections by Richard Leonard SJ for the North Sydney Parish, which we will share here in coming weeks...
18.01.2022 20 November is World Children’s Day. Six hundred children aged 10-13 are arrested, charged and locked up in Australian prisons every year, despite there being a wealth of evidence from Australia and abroad showing that children under 14 years do not possess the neurological maturity to form criminal intent. The Jesuit Social Services #WorthASecondChance campaign calls on supporters to send a letter to their MPs asking them to raise the age and has prepared a pre-written letter which people can use to easily email their lower and upper house MPs: https://worthasecondchance.com.au/raisetheage-1

14.01.2022 At a time when the politics of the abortion debate have been very much in the spotlight, it can be all too easy to forget what, in a practical sense, that choice of life can mean. From America magazine, we share this touching personal account from a father of two children with Down’s Syndrome - and both the challenges and many gifts of his relationship with them

11.01.2022 On 14 November 1980, Jesuit Refugee Service was formed to respond to the plight of Vietnamese boat people fleeing their war-ravaged homeland. Since then, it has accompanied and helped countless others in more than 50 countries right around the world. In an address to Jesuit Refugee Service to mark its 40th anniversary, US president-elect Joe Biden has praised the Service as a great organization and committed to raise the number of refugees allowed into the United States to... 125,000 in his first year in office. The incoming president has framed the country’s historic commitment to refugee resettlement in theological terms, saying: This organization was founded to serve the needs of some of the most vulnerable among us: refugees and displaced people. JRS believes that, in the stranger, we actually meet our neighbor. And that every society is ultimately judged by how we treat those most in need. See more
10.01.2022 It is wonderful to see our shared mission of journeying with youth being reflected around the world. Indigenous youth communities from across the Asia Pacific region have recently participated in a virtual gathering centred on sharing their identities as Indigenous youth, as students, and as talented young people with bright futures ahead. The get-together was a part of the wider work of the Jesuit Companions in Indigenous Ministry (JCIM), which does a range of work in suppor...ting Indigenous students and future leaders in their formation. 05.01.2022 This Sunday, 15 November, The Catholic Church observes the World Day of the Poor. This year’s theme Stretch forth your hand to the poor is taken from the Old Testament book of Sirach and calls us to responsibility and commitment as part of one human family. In Western Sydney, @Jesuit Social Services partners with schools, parishes and suppliers to provide low cost, healthy fresh food to low income families through the Ignite Food Store, while The Op Shop provides quality ...recycled clothing and other affordable household items. The food and clothing deliver practical support to families and individuals in need. The food store offers customers a low cost hamper of food, which is supplemented with additional free produce and includes things like milk, bread and vegetables depending on availability. Buying a $30 hamper will deliver customers approximately $100 value through the additional free produce. For details about how you can donate and get involved, visit the Ignite foodstore website via the link below
05.01.2022 Fr Rogalski may well have worked to create a ‘little Poland’ down here, as has been said, but that would be a shallow assessment of the life of this man whom we commemorate today. - Bishop Gregory O’Kelly SJ In a weekend-long celebration of Fr Rogalski on 13-14 March, descendants of the first Polish migrant settlers together with members of the Polish, Clare Valley and Jesuit communities gathered at Polish Hill River to acknowledge the 150th anniversary of his arrival. Many of those attending journeyed across state borders, including a pilgrimage from Melbourne led by Polish Jesuit chaplain Fr Wieslaw (Tony) Slowik SJ.
03.01.2022 Our faith reminds us if any reminder were needed that we are not God. We are limited people with strengths and weaknesses which ebb and flow over time. Most peoples’ experience includes the gaining of skills as they move from infancy to adulthood and the losing of them as bodies and minds age. Our Saviour, the Christ, who became one with the human condition, did not magically assume perfection. Instead, he became heir to all the complexity, limitation and physical frailty that human flesh could throw at him, including torture and death on a Cross. In this article, Fr Justin Glyn SJ reflects on Carly Findlay OAM’s book, ‘Growing up Disabled in Australia’ in the context of his faith and his own life experiences.
02.01.2022 With Christmas coming, it can be a challenge to find the ideal way to show your loved ones you care. The Jesuit Mission Australia Gifts for change program allows you to replace a traditional present with the gift of nourishment, independence, education or empowerment, creating change for women, men and children who suffer the indignity of poverty and injustice. For example a gift of $50 can buy a child a bicycle so that they can get to school. ... To find out more visit https://shop.jesuitmission.org.au/ See more
02.01.2022 Jesuits the world over are known for their education ministry. One of the most dearly-loved, if perhaps lesser known, of the Australian Jesuit schools is Redfern Jarjum College , a primary school for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in inner Sydney. No-one who visits Jarjum leaves untouched by the tremendous love and energy of the students and staff and the school’s strong focus on care, not only of the students, but also of their families. We are privileged to share with you today a glimpse of life at this unique and very special school
01.01.2022 30 November is the Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare. It is a day of Remembrance with special significance for Jesuits. During World War II, Father Pedro Arrupe SJ, the former Superior General of the Society of Jesus and founder of the Jesuit Refugee Service, was teaching on the outskirts of Hiroshima when the first atomic bomb fell. Using the medical training he learned in his youth, Father Arrupe transformed the Jesuit residences into a makeshift hospital to care for the injured and dying. His example is a constant reminder of the need to remember and care for victims of chemical warfare. You can learn more about Fr Pedro Arrupe’s ministry to the victims of warfare here:
01.01.2022 Many of us who endured lockdown this past year also experienced an influx of the unusual commodity of spare time, a luxury the value of which we seldom consider. In this episode of AMDG: A Jesuit Podcast, guest Dr Conor M Kelly explores the different ways we use free time, what our faith has to say about leisure and some of the structural barriers that we still often find in our way. Listen to the full episode below!
