25.01.2022 COMING SOON... to a creek near you. Platypus breeding season! In the coming weeks we expect to see a bit of chasey and tail grabbing, all in the name of reproduction. The females will then be VERY hungry, as they prepare to go into lockdown! They will stay in iso for up to seven days whilst they incubate their eggs, so its essential they build up their fat reserves beforehand.... Its a great time of year to go platypus spotting! And remember, dawn is best! . . . . . #ausnatureguides #carnarvongorge #platypus #monotreme #lockdown #naturetrail #carnarvoncreek @outbackqueensland @visitcapricorn @romarevealed @centralhighlandsqld

24.01.2022 SORRY... NOT SORRY . I know, I know... weve posted quite a few sunrise shots in recent times, but there was no way we were walking past this one without taking a few happy snaps! . Whether its sunrise, sunset, or an unbelievably blue sky in the middle of the day, winter at Carnarvon Gorge just keeps on delivering one spectacular sky after another. And theyre too good to resist ... . Brace yourself, though! These mornings are cold , but it is oh so worth dragging yourself out of your cosy sleeping bag when this is what youre getting up for. . Just do as I do, and rug up like the Michelin man, and youll be just fine - Michelle . . . . . #ausnatureguides #carnarvongorge #sunrise #wintersky #goodtogo #thisisqueensland #coldmorning #layerup #rugup #holidayherethisyear Visit Capricorn Experience Outback Queensland, Australia Roma Revealed Discover Central Highlands QLD See more

23.01.2022 OUR NUMBER ONE FAN... PALM... Yep, we love the Carnarvon Fan Palm... but we're not sure if the feeling is reciprocated And we're not the only ones either!... Squirrel Gliders feel safe tucked up in amongst the dense crown. Blue-faced Honeyeaters use the fibres to build their nests. And Pied Currawongs flock here every winter to feed on their dark purple fruit. At this time of the year you can see some palms in full flower alongside others still bearing fruit! . . . . . #ausnatureguides #carnarvongorge #carnarvonfanpalm #livistonanitida #squirrelglider #bluefacedhoneyeater #piedcurrawong #visitcapricorn #outbackqueensland #centralqueensland #centralhighlandsqld #thisisqueensland

23.01.2022 UPLOADING THE GORGE | One of the projects that kept us busy during this covid-induced, extended off-season involved a bunch of U.S. university students. Every year we welcome a number of education groups to Carnarvon Gorge. Most of which come from U.S universities. When it became apparent that 2020 was no ordinary year, and St. Olaf College was forced to cancel their entire semester abroad, we were asked to turn our #carnarvongorge field trips into online learning materials.... Find out how we did it by following this link: https://capricornenterprise.com.au//australian-nature-gui/ Nathan White Images #ausnatureguides Visit Capricorn Experience Outback Queensland, Australia #onlinelearning #adaptable

23.01.2022 FLYING HIGH | Yay! Heli-Central will be back on deck at Carnarvon Gorge these school holidays! . Their scenic flights over nearby Moolayember Gorge are simply spectacular, and show how small Carnarvon Gorge is compared with the surrounding landscape! . Weve been up with their pilots many times, and have loved every minute! We might just have to splurge again this year!

23.01.2022 GORGE GRAFFITI - Yep... it's still a problem. And, in fact, it's getting worse! It's even made the news! Those of you who have walked with us before will know how we feel about this behaviour. Humans have left enough marks on this planet! Why some feel it's their right to do so in a place as beautiful and sacred as Carnarvon Gorge is completely beyond us!... Our National Park Rangers have spent the past two days cleaning graffiti from both Warrumbah and Boowinda Gorge to avoid the "monkey see, monkey do" dynamic. But how long will it last? Appropriate behaviour in a National Park is SUPER simple. Take only memories, leave only footprints.

22.01.2022 ASSASSIN BUG | Were celebrating #macromonday with this sassy Assassin Bug. . This incredible little animal is an ambush predator known for impaling other invertebrates (often ) on its mighty rostrum. . But wait... it gets better! Next they inject their prey with digestive enzymes, turning their innards to liquid, which they then suck back up their rostrum ... . Delightful, huh!? . Theyre reasonably common here at Carnarvon Gorge, and pretty calm most of time, but beware... if you pose a threat, theyll deliver a nasty bite youll remember for a lifetime! . . . . . #ausnatureguides #carnarvongorge #assassinbug #ambushpredator #holidayherethisyear #goodtogo Visit Capricorn Experience Outback Queensland, Australia Savannah Guides Limited See more

22.01.2022 WHY DO YOU WALK? . Do you walk to keep fit, clear your mind, spend time in nature, escape the hustle and bustle of life, or something else entirely? Wed love to hear your thoughts! Let us know in the comments below . For us, its about truly getting to know a place. Spending quality time in natural landscapes leads to a much deeper understanding of their natural and cultural values. And the more we learn about those landscapes, the more we love them! 22.01.2022 OUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME - As many of you know, last year we were forced to pack up our Carnarvon Gorge home, and start anew in @injuneqld This change has been great in many ways, but also left us wondering how on earth we were going to keep running our tours whilst living 160 km away from the Gorge? Well, after plenty of research, heres what we came up with! ... This awesome slide-on camper was custom built for us by @tong_metal_australia in Brisbane, and has quickly become our home away from home! In fact, were spending more nights sleeping in the camper, than we are in our bed at home Lucky the bed... queen size, I might add ... is super comfy, and the set-up is a breeze! We recently took some time off to go camping with friends at Mount Moffatt, with this as our backdrop! 22.01.2022 PEEK-A-BLUE... I see you! This Blue-faced Honeyeater has been taking full advantage of the sap-feed incisions created by Yellow-bellied Gliders. By night, the YBGs use their sharp, needle-like teeth to tear the bark from various eucalpyts in order to make the sweet sap flow ... 18.01.2022 HOO'S WAITING AT THE FRONT DOOR? Imagine this.... you're a Yellow-bellied Glider, and you've just woken up after sleeping the day away in the tree hollow you share with a few of your family members. You yawn and stretch, head out into the night and start foraging for tasty treats, being careful not to stray too far from the family group.... But then... one of your mates sounds the alarm call, letting you know there's a Barking Owl nearby. 17.01.2022 GLIDERS | Allow us to introduce you to three of our favourite nocturnal animals that we are lucky enough to encounter on a regular basis out here at Carnarvon Gorge. 1. Squirrel Glider - in our opinion this is the CUTEST glider species at the Gorge. They can be extremely timid and quick to hide, so sightings are fleeting but cherished And how bout dat tail!!! 2. Greater Glider - sometimes exceeding 1 metre (from nose to tail), this is by far the LARGEST glider species.... Being eucalyptus leaf eaters, they can happily sit in the same tree for most of the night, which makes for great viewing. 3. Yellow-bellied Glider - these highly social gliders communicate with one another using shrieks and gurgles, making them the NOISIEST gliders! Theyre also the species we see glide most frequently! Weve spent years honing our glider tracking skills, so your best chance of seeing these characters at Carnarvon Gorge is by joining one of our Night Safari Tours. 14.01.2022 OUT & ABOUT | Earlier this week, Simon and Michelle headed north to assist Discover Central Highlands QLD on a virtual reality project with filmmaker Lou Petho. . Day one saw us visit the beautiful #blackdowntableland National Park, located between the towns of Dingo and Bluff in central Queensland. . 13.01.2022 VALE PETER SLATER | It was with no small measure of sadness that Michelle and I received the news that Peter Slater had passed away on the 28th of May. . I got to know Peter as a youngster after becoming friends with his son, Raoul, at high school. At the time, I had no clue of his contributions to Australian natural history and the birding world, he was simply my mates Dad. . Later in life, as my career path turned to guiding, I began to encounter more and more of his wor...k; amazing photographs, paintings and illustrations of birds laid out in publication after publication. I ruined many a copy of Slaters field guide to Australian birds in exactly the manner Peter, Pat (his wife), and Raoul, intended - by taking it out into the field and using it to get to know birds. . Over a decade ago, Peter and Raoul took the time to come and stay with me at Carnarvon Gorge. I dont think Ive ever learned so much about so broad a range of natural history topics in my life. Peters breadth of knowledge was stupendous but he shared it gently, often wrapped in a quirky story. . He was particularly fascinated by birds of prey. Peter continued to travel, photograph, paint, and write about birds right up until his passing last month. Ill remember him each time I see/hear the peregrine falcons cruising Carnarvons Cliffs. . . . . . #carnarvongorge #ausnatureguides #ornithology #ornithologist #birdwatching #birdphotography #birdillustrator #birdphotographer #birdpainter See more
