JEWELLERY is adding a sparkle to the Sarina Arts and Crafts Centre during the month of April. Kathy Murray and Sheryl Head are featured artists this month, displaying a wide range of precious and semi-precious stones and uniquely designed and handcrafted solid bronze, copper or .999 pure silver pieces. The hunt for some of Australia’s beautiful opals and other gems is a way of life for Kathy and her husband Bruce, who visit remote gemfields throughout Queensland and interstate. Bruce specialises in hunting down the stones, buying bulk rock containing the gems from prospectors throughout Australia, and then cutting and polishing them into their final shape. Kathy then takes over, hand-making the final settings for pendants or necklaces. She is also a talented self-taught artist and is displaying a range of her paintings this month. Sheryl has been creating her unique designs from her home for several years under the brand name Pinkie Prints, after being introduced to the process by her daughter Kirsty of Brisbane. Every piece is unique, no two pieces are ever the same, she said. I can make charms from fingerprints, hand/foot prints or a child’s drawing or writing. She hand-makes silver, copper or bronze designs in precious metal clay which are then dried, sanded and fired in a kiln before being burnished and completed with beads, chains and links or leather and cords. Their display is part of a large range of handcrafted goods created by local crafters at the Sarina Arts and Crafts Centre, which is open seven days a week at the Sarina Field of Dreams Parkland.
