24.01.2022 Thanks to Dan Maxwell, Justine Kerrigan (Chair of the ACS Diversity, Inclusion & Reconciliation Panel), Damian Wyvill ACS, Susan Stitt ACS, John Platt & Garry P...hillips ACS, Joel Froome ACS, Michael Filocamo, Ben Cotgrove, Nicole Delprado & General Strike Studio for posting to #whoisinyourcrew It has been wonderful to see these images of diverse camera teams over the last six weeks. The campaign has come to a close now, but for change to happen we must all keep working towards diversity and inclusion in our own teams and within our industry. Pic 1: Dan Maxwell @doghouse Diversity on set is important now to drive the future. Showing young aspiring talents, trying to reach their goals, that they do belong regardless of gender, race or beliefs. Thank you to @bonnieelliottdp and @austcine for motivating us all to talk about how we can make change. @kittymayallwood @allybarker12 @yangshanglien @camcmorley @jasemorling @sassblanch @muzzaj Pic 2 Justine Kerrigan @justine_kerrigan We all see the world through a different lens based on our life experiences and often strongly influenced by the stories we grow up watching. When we have diversity behind the lens our world is expanded. We learn from each other and help create a better world for it. I am truly grateful for the many directors and DP’s who gave me a break and to the maverick woman I looked up to when starting out in the camera department - @erika_addis ,Martha Ansara, Jane Castle, Jacquie Wolf, Katherine Milliss plus many more. @simonhigginscinematography @mayetaclark @megsriakos @carinaburke @vedranamusic Pic 3: Damian Wyvill ACS @damianwyvill Camera team of Flying Doctors in Broken Hill: @claudiabutters @sian_rowena_bates @the_other_meg_white @kurt.grimes @insta_b1nsta @brendanshawacs @dermotmc Pic 4: Susan Stitt ACS @susan_stitt I have always felt deeply privileged to be in the Camera Department. My teachers, mentors and collaborators. They taught me to shoot, and they took a chance on me when I was just starting out. Diversity is about including people who feel there’s no place for them in camera. Everyone should have the right to create culture regardless of sex, gender, sexuality, race, religion, neurodiversity or class. More diversity means more perspectives. As DPs we have the power to make it happen. BTS Photos @alfie_samba @evance_breteuil Pic 8: Nicole Del Prado @nicole_delprado_film Camera is close to my heart- it’s where I got my start. It’s been so great seeing the incredibly diverse crews working all over Aus. I’ve always thrived on the perspective brought to set by a diverse crew and I’m excited to see representation and diversity continue to grow in the camera department. Pic 10: General Strike Studio The story of FREEMAN was always a celebration of black + girl power. So it felt important to me to crew this film with as many women and indigenous creatives as possible. Was it hard you ask? Not really. 23.01.2022 Zoom webinar with Bollywood based DP, Benjamin Jasper!! Sep 17, 2020 6:30pm. Register below! Join ACS NSW and cinematographer Benjamin Jasper as he gives us an insight into living and working out of Asia as well as his experiences shooting in Bollywood. Ben will be in conversation with cinematographer and new committee member Simeon Bryan.... Ben began his career in the camera dept in 1992 straight after university. He spent the next 15 years working his way from clapper loader to focus puller then operator and eventually 2nd unit cinematographer. He worked on hundreds of commercials and close to 40 feature lms and series. In 2007, after the birth of his son Archie, Ben "retired" from working as assistant/operator and committed to a career as a director of photography. In that same year Ben and his family relocated to Shanghai to capitalise on the upcoming Olympics and World Fair. This turned out to be a very fortunate move. In the years since that move he has been consistently working with world-class directors around the world. In 2018-19 Ben shot 'War', a Bollywood blockbuster shot in nine countries over a gruelling 148-day schedule. It was released in September 2019 and quickly became the highest-grossing Bollywood lm of the year, as well as achieving the highest opening day gross in Bollywood history.

13.01.2022 When I was an assistant I often worked with female focus pullers and DPs. Now that I am a cinematographer it seems natural my own teams be diverse and inclusive.... Putting together a great team means finding the people who are the best at their job and have a good working dynamic, which always seems to be well represented by a diverse crew. This is the way it always comes out for me. 13.01.2022 As cinematographers we have the power to employ our crews. I believe that we have to be proactive and include at least 50% women in the camera department. On my... last production there were 4 women in a crew of 7, and one of the men was indigenous. It makes for a better and more balanced working environment and also a far better representation of the world we live in. The challenge now is to enable these women to move through the camera department and to be given the same opportunities as the men. 10.01.2022 Thanks to Zoe White ACS, Mark Wareham ACS, Sissy Reyes, Toby Petch, Ben Allan ACS, Arri Australia, Taste Creative & Bus Stop Films and all others who posted to ...#whoisinyourcrew this week. Some very thoughtful words accompanied these images, so sharing those too. The last week of the campaign is coming up so please share more images with us, so we can repost them next Sunday! If storytelling is the way in which we represent ourselves and our world, well it goes without say that we need diverse storytellers to be complete as people. We are all part of the picture. And how much richer will that picture become when we can all share in the making of it, together. Pic 7: Toby Petch @tobypetch @emmaelias__ As department heads we need to influence change in the people we are working with, encouraging the training required to input diversity through the full range of the crew. Training new people is a commitment, it requires time, patience and understanding. The choices made as to who is trained, when and why are in our hands. These are decisions that need to be made carefully if we want change, as change will never come without our conscious devotion towards it. Pic 8: Ben Allan ACS @benallanacs @velindawardell @nicdaleydp Supporting diversity in our industry is more than just hiring diversely. It’s also about giving people opportunities to progress their careers and supporting them as they forge their own path. These are two photos of Velinda Wardell ACS in my crew, 20 years apart. The first is in 1998 testing the new @kodak_shootfilm 800T neg stock and the other is camera operating for me on a job in 2018. In between she earned a Masters degree in #cinematography from @aftrs became National Secretary of @austcine and the 6th woman ever to receive her ACS letters. She is also a friend, mentor and inspiration to countless young female cinematographers around the world. Today you can see her work camera operating in the crew of Academy Award Winner @ddbeebe on @iamwomanmovie shot on the @arri_rental #Alexa65 Nicola Daley @nicdaleydp stood out to me as soon as I met her when she was a rental prep technician at @lemac_australia The first of these photos was taken when a newly freelance Nicola was camera operating for me on the short film la Palabra in 2002. Her sense of composition was then and still is exceptional. The second photo was taken 12 years later, the day after she became the 8th woman in history to ever receive the ACS letters. If people ever question the value of the push for gender equality I would point to Nicola, who in recent years has started to get work more in line with her talent and professionalism. This has included the TV series Harlots The Letdown Paradise Lost and Domina, the feature film Pin Cushion and documentary biopic of Manolo Blahnik The Boy Who Made Shoes For Lizards. She has been admitted to the illustrious ranks of @bafta and @theacademy - none of which has surprised me but I know that if she had been a man with the same talent, the opportunities would not have taken so long to come around. Very proud to know her and to have occasionally helped her along the way.
