24.01.2022 There's some serious parent blaming going on in today's piece in the Sydney Morning Herald. And to be clear we are in no way condoning what happened. In case you don't know the story - Year 12 boys from Shore School in Sydney - apparently put together a muck up day challenge that included some horrifying and in some cases criminal behaviours - eg spit on a homeless person, defecate on a train, kiss and underage girl... It is an appalling example of privileged boys and young m...en displaying a breathtaking lack of judgement, empathy and decency. There is clearly an issue of toxic masculinity going on and there is no excuse for this behaviour. But is it really 100% the fault of the parents as this piece says. "Parents who send their kids to private schools select institutions that reflect their values and beliefs. The schools then reinforce those values and beliefs, in a symbiotic relationship known as "school culture"...I am not interested in blaming the school. I want to know what the hell is going on with the parents of the boys who wrote that list...Something has gone very wrong in the raising of those boys. At best, their parents have abdicated responsibility for their moral education. At worse, their parents have passed on their values of individualism, entitlement and toxic masculinity." While the parents clearly are responsible for raising children, parents are not the only sources of influence. If we are to address problems of toxic masculinity, toxic privilege and teach empathy and social responsibility - parents, schools and the community all need to address these things out in the open. Of course, the parents in this case need to take a good long look at themselves and address what's gone on with their son and how they are going to be a better parent and help him become a better person. The young men involved are certainly going to be made to realise that their actions have consequences for themselves and others, something which they clearly hadn't grasped before these events. Let's hope it is a sobering lesson that they learn. But we also need to address these things on a wider scale. The huge outrage on social media, the media and in conversations across the country is a good start and a positive. What once might have been dismissed as 'boys being boys' is now called out for what it is. The outcry is saying loud and clear that this behaviour is abhorrent. We should be discussing it because it makes us all more aware of the problem. The school is reportedly looking at expelling the boys and young men involved, but it also needs to look at its culture and work on how to explicitly address the toxic masculinity and toxic privilege this incident has demonstrated, and review how it proactively teaches awareness, empathy and social responsibility. And as parents we all need to look at the values we teach our kids - not just by what we say but what we don't say and our actions.

"I wake up in the middle of the night and lie there furiously worrying about things because when you are like anyone who does that sort of juggle between full-time work and a family, you always feel like you're screwing something up, or you're missing something, or you're not doing everything right, that your kids are on their screens more than ever, that you should be a better parent, and there's nothing more crushing than feeling like you're not doing a good job of that important job." That's everyday life, then throw in a global pandemic.

Today marks the start of holidays and I truly dont know what that really means (what is the September holidays w...ithout getting away or footy finals or perhaps the first BBQ with friends of the season?) but heres what I do know... You need a really big pat on the back for doing Term 3. Our kids need a pat on the back too. We need to find ways to holiday at home - or even just mark this moment. For so many of you theres not a clear date as to when your kids will, if at all, go back in Term 4. And thats a lot. Its all a lot. But can you just give yourself a little moment to acknowledge that youre getting through, as imperfectly as you are? Because THIS IS NUTS! And no one I know is nailing it. No one. Because goodness knows youre probably feeling a bit depleted and Im guessing bored and over it (or just me??) Melburnians do Spring WELL! 10.01.2022 This is a simple, methodical approach to teaching literacy that's getting results for these kids...there is a long history of argument over how to teach reading best, but actually what comes out of this example and other evidence is that a mix of strategies works best and what works for one child may not be as effective for another...and it is great to read about kids making such great progress and their confidence growing.
