A trip down memory lane for Australian Karate: The first Australian national team participated in the inaugural World Karate Championships - World Union of Karate-do Organizations (WUKO) which was held in Japan in 1970! The fight duration was limited to 2 minutes, with 2 times 2 minutes over-time, if necessary. Representing Australia was John Halpin and Danny Ellaby John had a bye first round and lost to France in the second round. The Frenchman had beaten the Korean in the 1st round. Danny (on the other side of the draw) also had a bye in the 1st round. In the 2nd round he came up against the Syrian, who had beaten the competitor from Philippines.
