18.01.2022 "Each year, more than US $2 billion of foreign aid is invested in the Pacific Islands region, equivalent to roughly 8% of the region’s GDP. This aid comes in the form of thousands of projects from more than 60 donors. Information about these projects is often messy and opaque, with public information at the project level for all donors often being sparse, lacking in detail and difficult to access."

15.01.2022 "Voter turnout is high in Papua New Guinea. In 2017, approximately 90 per cent of the estimated voting-age population cast a vote, despite PNG not having compulsory voting. This could be a sign that people in PNG are enthusiastic about participating in elections, or it could point to electoral problems."

08.01.2022 Ishmael Toroama has been declared Bougainville’s new President. The former BRA Commander, along with Sam Kaouna, brought much of the rank and file BRAs into the peace process in 1998 and has remained committed to the peace process since. Last year he was part of a major reconciliation ceremony between the BRA, BRF and PNGDF. He may have been voted in as an insurance policy by Bougainvilleans who voted overwhelmingly (98%) for independence in last year’s referendum. He will be... a tough negotiator, keen to have the vote ratified in PNG soon and deliver on Bougainville’s desire for political and economic independence. Ben Bohane interviewed him on the morning polling opened in Arawa for the referendum in November 2019, where he was the first to cast his ballot. #Bougainville #BougainvilleReferendum #Independence #IshmaelToroama
