25.01.2022 Officer trainees in Hobart recently conducted training in the art of describing terrain and terrain effects by practising the delivery of ground briefs. (What a... superb place to practice BTW). Whilst they sound simple, producing a coherent description of how geographical features and vegetation might effect your plans can be a tricky skill to master. Whilst observing socially distant measures cadets were put through their paces physically with a session in the gym later in the weekend. All of these activities are aimed at making the Cadets experience at Duntroon in the final phase of their commissioning just a little bit easier. Good drills Tasmania Platoon!!!!

24.01.2022 A number of members of SUR have just finished serving on the NSW/Victorian border as part of OP COVID Assist. Due to the time commitment of our members we were able to continue to deliver training and support operations. Well done team.

23.01.2022 #OnThisDay 120 years ago, Lieutenant Neville Howse carried a wounded trumpeter to safety under heavy fire, later operating on him and saving his life. A format...ion from the mounted infantry brigade were caught up with Boer troops outside Vreedefort, South Africa. In the thick of the fierce fighting that followed, 38 year-old Doctor LT Howse risked his life by racing out to rescue the units trumpeter, who had been shot in the stomach while sounding the retreat. When LT Howse reached the injured trumpeter, he stopped the blood flow from the wounds, raised him on his shoulders, and carried him back to the cover of a nearby farm. Here, he successfully operated on the trumpeters stomach, saving his life. For this action, LT Howse was the first Australian to be awarded a Victoria Cross; the only one ever awarded to a member of the medical profession in the Australian forces. #GoodSoldiering

19.01.2022 Over the weekend, members of AUR participated in the annual Simpson Trophy shooting competition. The Simpson Trophy is one of the world's oldest shooting compe...titions, celebrating its 130th year. The competition consisted of engaging targets between 100 and 300m in a variety of shooting positions. 10.01.2022 Army Reserve Officer Cadets graduate from Sydney University Regiment 63 new Lieutenants are embarking on the next phase of their army career after graduating from the Army Reserve Officers Commissioning Course that was adapted to meet COVID-19 restrictions. The final phase of the course, Training Block 5, is traditionally run at the Royal Military College Duntroon (RMC-D) in July but due to travel restrictions it was brought forward to May and conducted by the Sydney Univ...ersity Regiment (SUR) at Holsworthy in Sydney. This meant the Officer Cadets (OCDTs) could transition straight from the previous training block to the final phase without having to travel or leave Holsworthy. Many of the trainees spent more than three months on course to ensure their training and commissioning continued despite the COVID-19 restrictions.

07.01.2022 Message from Commander 8th Brigade, Brigadier Brendan Casey: I hope all members of the mighty 8th Brigade (Training) are staying home and staying healthy in these crazy times that we find ourselves. Many of us wish that the COVID-19 pandemic had not happened in our time but, as Gandalf said in the Lord of the Rings, So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us. So, decide to have the Courage to be positive, use your Initiative to make a difference, have Respect for all, particularly those who are struggling in these times, and embrace Teamwork to get things done even if in a different way. Good Soldiering.

05.01.2022 Latest message from Commander 8th Brigade (Training): To all members of the mighty 8th Brigade (Training), this post marks the turning of the tide in Australias battle against the pandemic. However we need to be vigilant to ensure Gandalf the Whites prophecy from the Lord of the Rings does not eventuate, A great storm is coming but the tide has turned. To avoid a great health storm we all must maintain our social (I prefer physical) distancing and personal hygiene. There is no avoiding the economic storm but the Army provides reliable employment and clear guidance as to how we emerge from this crisis, having turned it into an opportunity, a stronger and better Army in Motion!
