20.01.2022 'Number 2204' I crouched low to the ground to take this photo of wild stallion Number 2204. Using that angle, I was able to eliminate the rusted out fencing, th...e dirty water basin, the empty hay racks, the piles of manure and the backsides of the other captured wild mustangs crammed together in the heat of the sun at the BLM holding facility. By crouching low, I could frame this wild stallion's beautiful face against the mountains that once defined his freedom and shaped his spirit. By crouching low, I made Number 2204 wild and free again. www.sandysharkey.com #seewildhorses #savewildhorses
19.01.2022 The Fell Pony should be seen as deserving a special place as part of a unique culture. Quote The Wildflife Trusts play a very important part in protecting ou...r natural heritage so thank you for this Sir David Attenborough as you must now include the Fell Pony as part of Cumbria Wildlife Trust's reserve at Clints Quarry in west Cumbria. This weekend 3 young Fell Ponies have been put out to graze this SSSI site of species rich grassland of 9 hectares for the next 3 months. This sheltered quarry is a summertime haven for wildflowers and insects and butterflies and what a wonderful kick start these ponies will give to the soil and plant life in this very special place. This quarry has been left to nature over the last 80 years, during its working history since the 17th century. Quarry workers would have worked along with the ancestors of these young ponies. Native ponies would have been in their hayday then, strong and even tempered working in droves as pack ponies they would have brought the quarried stone out to the lime-kilms for agriculture use. Local houses and buildings would have also been built from this quarry and Fell ponies would have played an important part in the region as transport. Later in the 19th century the quarry had its own railway line and the limestone was used in the local steel making factories up until the 1930’s when the quarry was closed. These ponies have shaped our lives in the Cumbrian landscape, so it is nice to see them share this now peaceful haven , helping the wildlife make a continued recovery. See more
