22.01.2022 Fair work inspectors have found only 58% of audited businesses in Western Sydney were paying their employees correctly. While the businesses in breach faced on the spot fines and enforcement actions, the Fair Work Ombudsman says the non-compliance rates uncovered in the campaign are highly concerning, and won’t be tolerated. 21.01.2022 ‘Size Matters’ is an innovative and humorous approach to a serious issue. The road safety campaign aimed at 18-25 year olds sharing the roads with heavy vehicle...s was created by a team of Swinburne University of Technology Communication Design students who participated the Re:act 2018 design competition. The team believes the campaign’s use of humour is one of the most effective strategies to target a disengaged audience. ‘Size Matters’ aims to humanise trucking operators by challenging stereotypes and encouraging a change in attitude. The proposed campaign would be delivered via social media to share road safety messages and run engaging competitions, before a wide-scale roll out and long-term campaign that utilises billboards, truck branding, posters and merchandise to engage with the target audience. The ATA partnered with strategic creative agency Hard Edge for the Re:act challenge and will use the results to inform research into the design and messaging of the safety exhibition inside the Volvo ATA Safety Truck (proudly sponsored by BP, Volvo Trucks Australia and nti) For more information about the competition, head to www.re-act.com.au

19.01.2022 Our wonderful Michelle Bailey from Baileys Removals & Storage will be completing The Great Cycle Challenge this month... Take a look at her story below and show her some love. "Hi, Next month, I am riding in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer! My goal is to ride 100km throughout the month...and my challenge starts THIS WEEKEND.... Why am I doing this? Because cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Australia. The challenge will be tough, but it's nothing compared to what these brave kids face every day of their lives as they battle this terrible disease. Kids should be living life, not fighting for it. And so I am taking on this challenge to raise funds to end childhood cancer and give these kids the brighter futures that they deserve. Please support my challenge by making a donation through my fundraising page: www.greatcyclechallenge.com.au/Riders/michellebailey All funds raised will support Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work to develop treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer. Thank you for your support. Michelle P.S. Wish me luck - my 100km challenge starts this weekend!" See more

15.01.2022 NOTE: AFRA Members have been sent additional information regarding the use of face masks as well as updated border information for each state, via Newsflash this morning. If you have not received this information, contact the office on 02 9659 5300. Wearing face Masks in Victorian Hot Spots Unless an exception applies, if you live in metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire you must wear a face-covering when you leave your home for one of the four reasons: shopping for food ...and supplies, recreation or exercise, medical care and caregiving, and study or work if you can’t do it from home. This includes traveling on public transport, in a car with people outside your household. If you live in metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire and must travel outside of these areas, for necessary goods and services, medical care and caregiving, or study or work, you must continue to wear a face covering.

11.01.2022 AFRA has received some reports that furniture removal vehicles are being turned back at the New South Wales border, coming up from Victoria, by NSW border patrol officers. The furniture removal industry continues to be considered a critical service and there has been no amendment to any orders or directions that exclude exemptions to our industry from any state whatsoever. The NSW order clearly states: New South Wales Public Health (COVID-19 Border Control) Order 2020 Schedu...le 1 Authority to enter New South Wales 1. Person providing a critical service that consists of the movement of freight or persons on a commercial basis (as specified in paragraph (a) or (b) of the definition of critical services in clause 3 Clause 3 Definitions states: Critical services include the following services (a) the movement of freight on a commercial basis. There is no ambiguity in the order however it would seem that the interpretation of these clauses at some border crossings is resulting in further anxiety, anger and frustration for both operators and consumers who are already in a heightened state of distress simply because of the need to relocate. In most cases there is a legal contract that must be settled being a sale/purchase or tenancy etc. Legislation surrounding these contracts is not paused as a result of COVID and consumers may find themselves in legal circumstances and additional costs as a result of any restriction that would prevent that relocation. More importantly we are not aware of the reasons for a move; the relocation could be the result of someone trying to remove themselves from a domestic violence situation, work, death of a family member or in these times, just be close to elderly parents or family. Moving home is considered one the most stressful times of a person’s life simply because such relocations are the result of a change in life. The public do not need the misinterpretation of such orders to create further anxieties or cost. AFRA has and continues to support the strictest COVID practices. We have provided detailed information to members, training and resources to assist with the managing of this pandemic and the public well-being and continue to do so. AFRA has reached out to the New South Wales Government for clarity and confirmation of the situation. We suspect this situation may be caused through a misunderstanding at certain border checkpoints and expect the matter will be rectified quickly. Road Freight NSW
