22.01.2022 Ten years ago today, at 8:20 AM on Tuesday, 20 April 2010, the morning routine of Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents was shaken up by a magnitude 5.0 earthquake the... largest ever recorded in the region. The earthquake occurred under Boulder at a depth of approximately 1.7 kilometres, and caused major damage to nearby historical buildings. People reported feeling shaking up to 200 kilometres away from the epicentre. Within days, Geoscience Australia deployed five temporary seismic stations around Kalgoorlie-Boulder to record aftershocks. From 22 April to 8 June 2010, almost 550 aftershocks were located by the temporary stations. You may not realise it but, on average, Australia is rattled every few days by an earthquake of magnitude 3 or above. We dont feel every small tremor that happens, but the larger earthquakes are powerful enough to cause serious damage to buildings and infrastructure. 09.01.2022 The influence of geology on wines has long been discussed and tested. In the Marne Valley of the Champagne region of France, the predominantly clay and limestone soils are said to provide a perfect medium for the Pinot Meunier grapes grown in this region. Geoscience is used in many different aspects of our lives and society so celebrate Geoscientists today. #Geoscientistsday

09.01.2022 The Australian Geoscience Council (AGC) and the Australian Academy of Science (Academy) take great pleasure in announcing the recipients of the 34th International Geological Congress Travel Grant Scheme. This year the travel grant has been awarded to three early career geoscientists who intend to use the grants to attend International Geoscience conferences and conduct field and laboratory work in collaboration with leading researchers at Universities in the UK, US and Cana...da to advance their research objectives. A diverse range of applications were received and these three applications were selected, based on merit, to share the funding pool of nearly $15 000. The Travel Grants have been made possible through a trust fund administered by AGC and the Academy, which was set up after the 34th International Geological Congress in Brisbane in August 2012. Past recipients of the 34th International Geological Congress Travel Grants have attended conferences, completed field work, carried out ground breaking laboratory work in places like Greenland, New Zealand, Switzerland, Chile, Canada, Croatia and Japan. All recipients are asked to provide a short report on their experiences and achievements they have gained through the travel grants. You can read some of the past reports on the AGC website at www.agc.org.au//geoscien/previously-awarded-travel-grants/ To find out more about the 34th International Geological Congress Travel Grant Scheme for Early-Career Australian and New Zealand Geoscientists and how to apply for a grant go to www.agc.org.au/res/geoscience-grants/34th-igc-travel-grant/

07.01.2022 Bipartisan support for geoscience has been demonstrated through separate commitments by the government and opposition to boost the provision of data and support... for exploration of next generation hidden mineral deposits in Australia. More innovation and substantial lead-times are required for developing and discovering the resources that Australia and the world needs says Dr Bill Shaw, President of the Australian Geoscience Council. 04.01.2022 Add this to your calendar and make sure you participate in this free Webinar Free Webinar - Crystallography in ore deposits the other half of the story This Friday 1st of May at 1 pm Perth time (Australian WST)... By Mark Pearce (CSIRO) Abstract: Geochemistry, geophysics, and field observations are the mainstays of ore deposit studies and the basis of most exploration tools. Crystallography plays a controlling role in all these disciplines by governing physical rock properties, trace element budgets and textural relationships. Understanding to what extent processes are influenced by minerals structure provide valuable clues as to why exploration methods work, or not in different systems. In this seminar, I will explore how relationships between mineral grains can be used to identify minerals destroyed by intense alteration using techniques developed for understanding extreme conditions in meteorite impacts. I will look at mineral replacement and pseudomorphism and how fluid conditions control the textures we observe in rocks and I will discuss how kinetics might exert a much stronger control on gold deposition than previously thought. Short bio: Dr. Mark Pearce is a geologist specialising in understanding rock microstructures to aid mineral exploration. He has been with CSIRO since 2012 and currently leads the Ore Body Geoscience Research Group. Marks PhD research in metamorphism of Archean gneisses in Scotland established his interest in electron microscopy and penchant for understanding grain-scale processes in excruciating detail. He has since branched out to work at much larger scales and has added X-ray based analysis techniques to his arsenal to help define effective exploration tools and understand how data acquired in exploration can be used to predict downstream geomet performance. 02.01.2022 Today, Geoscientists Day, the Australian Geoscience Council takes much pleasure in announcing the launch of the Roy Woodall Medal. The Roy Woodall Medal seeks to recognise scientific excellence in both mineral exploration and the documentation of world-class mineral deposits This award honours the extensive contribution to scientific excellence in Mineral Geoscience that Roy Woodall AO has made over his lifetime. Roy Woodalls high scientific standards, innovative approach ...to exploration and use of the latest geoscientific techniques have left a enormous and lasting legacy of improved scientific methodologies and exploration successes. The WMC team under Roys leadership made many world class discoveries in Australia, several of which opened up entire new mineral provinces. The most notable of these include the Darling Range Bauxite Province, the Kambalda Nickel District, the Olympic Dam Copper-Gold-Uranium deposit and the St Ives Gold Camp. More importantly than even these discoveries, Roys dedication to the training and mentorship of other geoscientists has advanced the capabilities of Australias mining and exploration industries and the development of our nation. This intention of this award is to recognise those individuals that seek to emulate Roys contribution to the mineral industry by applying the best science to the endeavours of mineral exploration and the documentation of world-class mineral deposits. The goal of this is to encourage the ethos of scientific excellence that Roy was such a strong advocate for. The Australian Geoscience Council is now calling for nominations for the inaugural award of the Roy Woodall Medal. Nominations will be required to provide a succinct overview of the achievements and successes of their nominee. Nominations should also provide evidence of how the nominee stands out above other geoscientists as a rightful recipient of this award. The nominations should include three referees, separate to the nominators, prepared to support the nomination for this award. It is currently envisaged that the inaugural recipient of the Australian Geoscience Councils Roy Woodall Award will be announced at Diggers and Dealers in August 2020. Application forms can be completed via the online form on the AGC website https://www.agc.org.au/geoscience-in-aus/roy-woodall-medal/

02.01.2022 Just a reminder about the AGC/AAS Early Career Geoscientist Travel Grants. These are open for application NOW. There are new conditions relating to COVID-19 With the restrictions that COVID 19 has caused for overseas travel we encourage the 2020 applicants for these travel grants to detail innovative ways they can conduct their international research, laboratory and field work as part of their applications. There is also an opportunity to delay travel until it is safe. If... the option to delay travel is chosen then a detailed outline of the new program of activities, that must match as closely as possible to that outlined in the original application, must be submitted prior to transfer of funds to the recipient. To apply go to the AGC website https://www.agc.org.au//geoscience-/34th-igc-travel-grant/ Good Luck!
