22.01.2022 Presenting: Glass artist, ANU Alumni, and mother of four Catherine Newton in conversation with Evana Ho for this Mother's Day special. Cathy began her studies ...at ANU School of Art & Design as a mature age student in 2013, almost 15 years after she declared she was going to be a glass artist someday. She graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) and a litany of awards. Here, they talk about her career highlights as well as her most famous works, Mum's Hug, and how the process of making them is similar to motherhood. They discuss the importance of touch, and the new work Cathy is developing that is a response to these current social distancing times. Happy Mother's Day!

14.01.2022 Canberra Glassworks is thrilled to announce the recipient of the inaugural Flux Mentorship Award is Annette Blair. Annette will be undertaking self-directed men...torship with two internationally renowned artists - John de Wit (US) and Kirstie Rea (AUS). Her project focuses on a period of intense skill building as well as furthering the conceptual grounding of her practice. Since 2001 Annette Blairs work has explored ideas of character and identity by combining personal narratives with blown, hot-sculpted and hand-painted glass. Using her exceptional skills in hot-sculpted glass, Blair reproduces familiar household objects meticulously in glass, adding a nostalgic and highly personal story to each piece. These works remind us of the beauty in the everyday, the familiar and the things or people we might take for granted. This wonderful opportunity has been made possible by a benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous, his kind support acknowledges the need for artists to continue developing skills throughout their careers and the import role a mentor can play. We are grateful. Congratulations Annette Blair! Images: 1. Annette Blair in the studio blowing glass. Photo by Adam McGrath 2. 12.01.2022 Kayo Yokoyama is exhibiting at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre until the 26th July. The show, 'My story' explores her Japanese cultural heritage, focusing on... aspects of Zen philosophy which played a significant part in her upbringing. Her work often results in physical manifestations of her search for a sense of home and belonging across the different countries and cultures she has lived in. Delicately etched trees are a re-occurring motif which hint at the universal comfort of nature even in unfamiliar places. The moon and waterfalls are recent additions to her artistic language representing natures beauty and companionship. Yokoyamas new body of work will explore Japanese aesthetics and echo ideas of Zen philosophy. See more
