25.01.2022 HI HOBARTIANS (AND VISITORS). CELEBRATE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF DARK MOFO THIS WEEK! Not only is DARK MOFO culturally enriching, participating in DARK MOFO events is also very good for your health. Rug up in your Tassie Tuxedo (puffer jacket and polar fleece) and just get out there. As you walk around the exhibits at Dark Park and cruise to Salamanca you are getting great exercise for your body as well as your brain. Walking in the crisp night air is invigorating and enhances ...your sense of wellbeing. Then there is the FOOD! Oh, the wonderful food. You don't have to choose the usual nasty junk food. You can eat beautiful fresh Tasmanian winter produce prepared by our wildly creative, funky Tasmanian providores. Good for your tastebuds and your stomach. Don't indulge in too much of that delicious Tassie wine though! Hobart dressed up for DARK MOFO is a magical sight. Glittering party lights and strange noises fill the night. You can meet family and friends after dark. Often in winter, we want to hibernate when the sun sets. Being social not solitary is good for your mental health. Even wandering in the crowds on your own makes you feel less isolated and alone. So DARK MOFO is good for your psyche too! It's a WIN WIN situation! Indulge in DARK MOFO today! Your physical health will improve, your mental health will get a lift.....and that makes all of us at Newdegate Street Health Centre very happy. ENJOY! #darkmofo #winterhealth #tassielife

24.01.2022 OH NO.......YOU'VE GOT A COLD!!!! You valiantly fought it off for so long as others coughed and sneezed around you, but now you have finally succumbed! Blast it-what to do now? The common cold is an upper respiratory tract infection caused by various viruses. Symptoms include sneezing, coughing, sore throat, runny nose and lethargy. You are going to feel miserable for a while! There is no specific cure for a cold. It ususally hangs around for about 7 days and will normally r...esolve itself with time. You need to take it easy on yourself.Plenty of rest and lots of fluids (nice hot broths). For older children and adults over the counter medications, lozrnges, throat spray, cough syrup and decongestant and pain relief medication can be very beneficial. Talk to your pharmacist for some helpful advice. Pregnant women, infants and small children and the elderly need to be vigilant when they have a cold as symptoms can worsen quickly. You should also try to stay away from other people to avoid spreading your "bugs". If your symptoms are worsening or if you think that you may have influenza feel free to call us at Newdegate Street Health Centre to make an appointment. Rest up and stay warm.

22.01.2022 DDDDDD.......DO YOU GET ENOUGH VITAMIN D? DDDDDO YOU? Hobart in winter can be cold and a bit gloomy! This does not encourage one to strip off clothes and bask in the winter sunshine! Let's face it; your puffer jacket is is a permanent fixture, only removed at bedtime. As a result of lack of sunlight up to two thirds of Tasmanians are Vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D is so important! it gives you healthy bones and muscles. It wards off osteoporosis and rickets. Not having enou...gh causes you to feel "blue", have gut issues and low energy. You probably don't even know you are low in Vitamin D. You just don't feel "right"! Everyone covers up to keep warm, the days are short and the sun in weak, sunlight through glass filters out UVB resulting in no Vitamin D. Even people who work outside all day can have low levels of Vitamin D. People in nursing homes, hospitals or people who are housebound are also at risk. The darker your skin, the harder it is to absorb Vitamin D! A simple blood test is all you need to check your levels. Then it is as easy as taking a daily supplement to get your Vitamin D levels on track. Make an appointment with our Miraculous Medicos soon to get your "D" on.

21.01.2022 OH JOY SUMMER HOLIDAYS! Camping, bushwalking, the beach, long walks in the park. AND LOTS OF THINGS TO BITE YOU! Summer in Tasmania is so much fun but you need to be vigilant around all the creepy crawly ants, bugs and spiders that we share this beautiful state with. It is a good idea to carry a packet of antihistamines and a tube of soothing gel when you are out and about , just in case a bug bites. Always use insect repellent, avoid floral perfume (they will think you are... a flower!) ,wear long pants and AVOID provoking insects! If you are allergic to any insects an EPI pen is a MUST! Don’t leave home without it; it could save your life. Call the doctor if your bites are: Very painful, turn into a crusty rash, you develop a fever, get bitten multiple times or there are red streaks forming around the bite. Call the ambulance if: You have difficulty breathing, facial or neck swelling, fainting or vomiting. OK-now you are set. Time to get out in the sunshine! Call our Happy Health Professionals at Newdegate Street Health Centre if you need help with a Bite. Don’t let the bugs the Thugs!
