23.01.2022 Today on International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, we acknowledge the work of remarkable #Vanuatu women like Tatavola (Vola) Mataskelekele, who work with dedication and courage to protect women’s human rights. Vola is the Acting Coordinator of the Vanuatu Women’s Centre (VWC), where she has worked for over ten years to support, inform and advocate for women and children affected by violence. Vola is a lawyer and Australia Awards alumni with a Master of Laws from ANU. Tropical Cyclone Yasa (Category 1) is about 450km east of Pentecost and moving in a south-easterly direction. The potential for Tropical Cyclone Yasa to move closer to the central Vanuatu group in the next 24 to 48 hours is moderate to high. There is a severe weather warning for heavy rainfall and possible flooding is forecast with strong ...inland wind over southern islands. 20.01.2022 On 11 November, Australia’s Chargé d’affaires, Clinton Pobke, together with members of the Australian Defence Force and the Australian Federal Police joined Vanuatu’s President, H.E. Pastor Obed Moses Tallis, members of the Diplomatic Corps, ex-service men and women and the public at a Remembrance Day ceremony. 18.01.2022 The Vanuatu Meteorology & Geo-Hazards Department has issued Advisory Number 1 on Tropical Cyclone Yasa, now at Category 2. The system is slow moving in the north-northwest direction at 4 KM/HR over the past 6 hours. The potential for Tropical Cyclone Yasa to move closer to the central Vanuatu group in the next 24 to 48 hours is moderate to high. Winds close to the centre of the cyclone are estimated at 64KM/HR with gusts up to 120KM/HR. You may be receiving SMS alerts on #TC...Yasa. 15.01.2022 Congratulations to the 38 ni-Vanuatu APTC students who graduated with Australian qualifications on 25 November at the #APTC campus’ first face-to-face graduation for 2020. Her Excellency Sarah deZoeten was honoured to present these qualifications in a range of skill areas to support #Vanuatu’s economic recovery from the impacts of COVID-19 and TC Harold. She congratulated students for their commitment to studies during this extremely challenging year. Australian-funded epidemiologist Caroline van Gemert had a working session with Provincial Public Health Managers recently to develop a surveillance plan for each province of #Vanuatu. Australia’s support for Tropical Cyclone Harold recovery is in-line with Vanuatu’s Recovery Strategy. It will support the rebuilding of key infrastructure to withstand future disasters, improve water, sanitation and hygiene in communities, strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience, focus on training and sk...ills development in a time of COVID-19, and assist in revitalising livelihoods, the economy and tourism sector safely and securely. In the past we have supported Fest’Napuan by bringing in talented Australian artists to perform alongside Vanuatu’s best musicians and bands from the region live on stage. Due to COVID-19, we were unable to bring in an Australian artist this year, but we are very happy that we have been able to sponsor the festival. 01.01.2022 Congratulations to Natasha Stott Despoja AO on her election to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women. In her position as Australia’s Ambassador for Women and Girls in 2016 Despoja met with many of Vanuatu’s inspiring leaders, both women and men, promoting women's leadership, women’s economic empowerment and ending violence against women. She discussed ways to improve the lives of Vanuatu’s women and girls with a diverse range of people from across #Vanuatu.
