25.01.2022 Why are work health and safety laws important? They require a safe place of work by using a framework that requires duty holders to identify and control health and safety risks in their workplaces. WHS laws can also apply to other people at or near a workplace, including volunteers and visitors. Learn more: https://www.amsa.gov.au//work-health-and-safety-domestic-c

25.01.2022 Vessels are defined as workplaces in WHS laws. This means work health & safety laws apply to DCVs and impose certain obligations on the operation of DCVs. Those obligations are in addition to the obligations imposed by the National Law, which is administered by AMSA. Learn more about WHS on domestic commercial vessels: http://ow.ly/ppof50Chho1

18.01.2022 Four men were winched to safety after their catamaran overturned off the coast of Fraser Island on the weekend. While trying to turn the 5.2m vessel, it flipped, tossing them into the water. After climbing onto the upside down hull, they set off their EPIRB, alerting us to their situation. Racing against fading light, we tasked the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter to their location, where helicopter crew winched the men from the overturned vessel, into the safety of the airc...raft. This reminds us of the importance of safety equipmentthese guys were wearing life jackets, had flares and a registered beacon on board. A registered beacon meant we knew who we were looking for, we were able to call their nominated contacts to confirm their whereabouts and task rescue crews to find them quickly. Check your beacon battery and update your registration before you next head out on the water. Visit www.beacons.amsa.gov.au

12.01.2022 All waste is harmful in the marine environment, and you can help by sorting and separating all types of waste on board your boat, so that each type of waste can be recycled or disposed of appropriately. Contact your local marina, boat harbour, port or terminal office to find out what waste collection and disposal facilities are available. If you witness or see pollution in the marine environment that you think might be from a vessel, you can also make a general marine pollution report on our website: http://ow.ly/ooEO50Cu4A3 Order a free sticker for your vessel to remind those on board to do the right thing: https://www.amsa.gov.au/publications-order-form

11.01.2022 From 1 January, 2021 AMSA will be enforcing the requirement to have a float-free EPIRB on certain types of commercial vessels. It can take time for a beacon to be delivered and properly installed. Don’t wait until it’s too late! http://ow.ly/CEQN50Cub5k

11.01.2022 If you own or operate a commercial vessel, the safety of your passengers is your highest priority. Have a procedure in your safety management system which addresses a situation where a passenger is unaccounted for. A fast and effective response by your crew could help save a life in an emergency. http://ow.ly/cWLD50Chjbl
