20.01.2022 Tourists are trespassing and dumping rubbish on the traditional lands surrounding Uluru, as thousands flock to climb the rock before it is permanently closed later this year.

19.01.2022 THE BEST HOLIDAY EVER ! Working its way up my ‘Bucket List’ was to drive up to Cape York and stand at the tip of the Australian Continent. Trying to organise an... expedition from New Zealand required more time to research than I could afford. Where to go what to see where you can buy fuel / food / water where you can camp (most need to be pre-booked) what areas you can go into (a lot of private tracks) but most of all how to get there. We looked at taking our own vehicle, but trying to organise a group was difficult. Hiring a vehicle means we had to stick to the Peninsula Development Road (PDR) and we wanted to drive the Old Telegraph Track (OTT). The list went on. Then we came across ‘No-Limits 4x4 Hire’. I only own Land-Rover have done for over 30 years. Not only do No-Limits 4x4 Hire have Ex Australian Army Land-Rover Perenties but they also run fully escorted ‘Tag-a-long’ tours. Suddenly the near impossible became a Credit Card transaction and all the barriers disappeared. There was not one second of the 15 perfect blue-dome days to Cape York and back that I did not have a huge smile on my face. The food was great roast Lamb with mint sauce in the Aussy bush was not expected. Steak and roasted vegetables, Bacon & eggs with mushrooms for breakfast (not everyday) complete with table cloth all cooked on an open fire. It was not like a Tour Group having done 4 Tag-a-long Safaris so far this year in New Zealand in my own vehicle the No-Limits 4x4 Tagalong trip was like a trip with mates. The Friendly Aussy New Zealand banter, the jokes, the ‘ribbing’ in good humour we gave each other for me, made the trip. I genuinely enjoyed the company of Toby and Darryl from No-Limits and made new friends with the rest of the team. We are currently looking at booking another trip with No-Limits next year. Don’t dream it do it. Go Beyond.

08.01.2022 Gene, Laura Rangers I was born in Cairns, I got named after Gene Miles the Broncos (Brisbane) player. I obviously didn’t get his talent (laughs). When the army... (Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Programme, AACAP) came to Laura in 2016 we had a game of football where I broke my shoulder, no more footy for me. I went to primary school in Laura until grade 7 and then went to Cooktown High. I had 3 months left to finish my Grade 12 off, at that time I wasn’t thinking about school, I was thinking about getting out there and just working. I pulled out (of school) and went over to Welcome Station, I got my Cert III in Agriculture with the Indigenous Land Corporation. Before I started that, Dad and us and had a contract up in Mary Valley. We started that with one old fella called Craig Gould. I would go up in my school holidays, fencing and chasing bulls. After I did my 1 year out here (Welcome Station) I went away for about 10 years. I went down to Rockhampton, went out West and worked on a couple of stations (cattle). I had my own ABN number at the time doing my own invoices and stuff like that. I was a sub-contractor, an old fella, Robert Flute. Good old fella, straight down the line, didn’t mess about and he reminded me of my Dad, so I got on perfect with him. The old lady tended to baby me a bit. That was Chatfield Station. His son was working up here before as a chopper pilot, Dan Flute. It was good to see the country out there, he also had another station near Mt Garnet." Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation Brisbane Broncos "After 2 years I came back to Cairns. One afternoon I was mowing the grass, this fella come up to me and offered me a job. I was keen, I was sitting at about 120kg at the time. I rocked up, I didn’t know what I put myself in to. I saw this truck with a big crate on the back, little did I know, it was a removal truck. Cairns Careful & Courteous Removals and AAA. The fella I was working with at the time, a good fella and mentor, he looked after me. I was there for about 5 years, after about 3/4 months he ended up putting me as supervisor. I was happy. It got me fit, my weight went down to 63kg. It was stressful. It was the best feeling ever coming back home. I worked on the main roads from Laura to Lakeland. Learned a few things, how to drive the muti-tyred rollers. How the road works, how they put the levels in, the road camber, the final trim. I am now a Ranger and have been for 5 years. I love it. We do 4-wheeler, chainsaw, welding, fencing, mixing chemicals, 4WDing training. We maintain our own vehicles and bikes. I have a lot of different certificates. We do water monitoring and biosecurity as well. We do work with Universities and school groups. We have been to conferences. Represent our town, you can’t get any better than that. You grab that shame and throw it away, don’t be shame. I have been to Darwin, Broome, Kakadu and Nhulunbuy. There is another conference coming up with the Archaeologists down the Gold Coast. We do fire management as well. We help out community members and the Eiders around town and do the community garden at the school. It’s good to be working on country, get to go out and find new rock art and share it with our younger generation, going over the footsteps of our old people. Walking around the country you can definitively feel the presence of them, I can look at the country and see in my mind, where they are staying, where the kids been playing around. I’m just stroked every time I go out. I can help to make a difference. Griffith University We got a camp up here, about 3 hours ride on the quads, there is a rain water tank up there, good wee shed. Everything I go up there I always bump into 1 thing, 1 Kangaroo, 1 Pig, 1 Bull, it’s strange. At the camp, you have a spring right there. Last time I was out there we did some rock art recording. On our lunch break we went back to our camp. I took my boots off and sat down, just ready to close my eyes when I heard something crawl on the leaves. It was a big brown snake. It put a bit of life in me, I cleared the table, food went everywhere. That night I got a little crook. It was my fault I reckon, I was in the spring to get some water as we were low, I put the pump in and dug it out a bit. The snake, when it came it didn’t get a fright, it stood up and looked at me, turned and it was gone. The message I reckon is an old fella come to check me out because I was digging up the spring. He made me crook for doing that, mucking around in the spring, I shouldn’t have done that. I had a headache and wasn’t eating. Scent was rubbed on me, I laid down for a bit. I then got up all good and healthy. The message is respect country and don’t go poking around any springs. We have a good team. Ted has been a mentor and a mate, Sue as well. I am also a Deputy Chairman in the Ang-Gnarra Corporation. The Laura Dance Festival has been handed back to us (Ang-Gnarra), first time. The festival is next year, and the theme is, First Contact when Captain Cook come over. Jump on the Ang-Gnarra website (details below). To be hosting the festival in our own place means a lot. The first ever festival was up at Jowalbinna until they moved it down here (near Split Rock). Where they do the dancing is called, Bora Grounds. When you get to see all the different talents and that, different people, seeing people have a go, in the one area all enjoying themselves, having a good time is really good. I have connections to Olkola, Kuku-Taipan, and Lama Lama. I have no regrets where I am at the moment. If you are ever lost in the city it’s good to go back to your country and really find your identity, you will definitely find a spot where you belong, where you are supposed to be. I love being on country. #livepositive #postpositive Ang-Gnarra Aboriginal Corporation www.anggnarra.org.au

01.01.2022 It’s mustering season at the station at the moment. This brilliant photo was taken by Tom as we yarded our cattle into one of our yards South of the homestead a few weeks ago.
