Through his Olympiad journey, Nicholas is eager to make new friends and connect with others who share his appreciation of science. Nicholas is not new to STEM competitions. He represented Melbourne in the international maths competition Tournament of Towns in 2017 and 2018, and also led a team to second place in Victorias 2018 Maths Game Day. Beside...s his love of STEM, Nicholas enjoys a range of recreational and co-curricular activities. He plays three sports and is a member of numerous school clubs. He has also volunteered with the Red Cross and helped disadvantaged children at the Rotary Prahrans Homework Club. This well-rounded future biologist is passionate about the real-world applications of science. He is extremely interested in biomedical research, particularly immunotherapies for cancer treatments, and wishes to find a career in this area. He hopes to one day work for renowned medical research facilities, such as the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute or the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. Nicholas is inspired by the works of engineer Nikola Tesla, who was a major contributor to the design of the modern electricity system. He admires the way he pioneered many ideas and practical applications of electricity despite the negative feedback from his colleagues and the public. Nicholas has enjoyed testing his limits and gaining biology knowledge that is not taught at the secondary school level. Inspired to represent Australia at the next competition? 03.01.2022 Canberran Alexandra Vickery has always been interested in science, one of her fondest early primary school memories being the schools geology unit. She will get the opportunity to further this passion after earning a place on the 2020 Australian Earth Science Olympiad team, alongside three other talented young scientists. Alexandra is fascinated by astronomy, physics and geology. She loves the idea of gathering data from the cosmos and the fact that there is so much in the u...niverse and on Earth to explore. For geology, her interest was partially sparked by the multi-coloured, textured rock tiles in her house. I like getting to explore how our Earth has formed ... every rock seems to have a story to tell, and its amazing to me that we can chronicle our world back before humans were around, she says. Since entering high school, Alexandra strives to take part in every extra-curricular science activity on offer. One example is the Science Mentors ACT program, where she studied and wrote a report on variable stars, taking observations with a dedicated teaching telescope. Science aside, music and writing take up Alexandras spare time. She plays piano and clarinet and studies jazz at school. She has also participated in the Pens Against Poverty writing competition several times, with some success. Alexandra views Marie Curie as one of her greatest role models. She is motivated by Curies dedication and work ethic, despite all the setbacks she faced throughout her career. Alexandra hopes to refine her career aspirations on her Olympiad journey, and one day work in a STEM field. #sciencewithASI #girlsinSTEM #IESO #earthscience #TeamAustralia #AustralianScienceOlympiads #InternationalScienceOlympiads #SummerSchool2020 Lyce franco australien de Canberra / Telopea Park School

02.01.2022 Nicholas Wu regarded the Australian Science Olympiads program as a fantastic opportunity to advance his education and make new friends. Today, his dedication and diligence has pulled him through rounds of selection and earned him a place on the 2020 Australian Chemistry Olympiad team. He will be representing Australia alongside three other talented young chemists. Chemistry is Nicholass favourite area of science. He feels chemistry has a good balance of abstract concepts and... general information, sitting in between physics and biology. Outside of STEM, Nicholas is a nationally qualified swimmer. He has been training since he was 10 years old and competing at the national level since he was 14 years old. Training nine times a week with his team, he is committed to beating his personal bests and placing in the top 10. Nicholas strives to be like Cameron McEvoy, an Australian Olympic swimmer who is also studying astrophysics. He looks up to his ability to compete at the Olympic level while also studying an extraordinarily complex science.
