03.01.2022 On 1 March 2019, Minister Coleman announced that applications to sponsor a parent for a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa will be open from 17 April 2019. Sponsors will be able to lodge an application to sponsor their parent from 17 April 2019, Immigration Minister David Coleman announced. Once a sponsorship application has been approved, a sponsored parent will be able to apply for a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa. Applications for the visa are intended to open from 1 ...July 2019. The visa allows parents to remain in Australia for a longer period of time, up to five years at a time without departing. It provides an alternative option to Visitor visas which only allow shorter periods of stay. Parents are still eligible to apply for Visitor visas and/or permanent Parent visas. The 7 must-know facts about this new temporary sponsored visa for parents are ; - there is no Balance of Family Test required for this visa, meaning a visa applicant only needs one of their children to reside in Australia. - a 3-year-visa will cost $5000, a 5-year-visa will cost $10,000 - There is an opportunity of a single renewal for another five years at the same price giving a potential maximum stay of 10 years. - up to 15,000 people each year can be granted this long stay parent visa. - Children/Sponsors will be required to pay for their parents' private health insurance. The children will also need to act as financial guarantor on any extra healthcare costs their parents rack up in Australia. - Those on the new visa will not be allowed to work, however, the government hopes they will take on family roles which would see reduced pressure on childcare facilities. - Those sponsoring their parents for the new visa need to be Australian citizens or permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens.
