25.01.2022 The Victorian Branch of the Australian Fabians invites you to the first event of our Autumn Series on Privatisation Since the 1980’s and 1990’s there has been a massive privatisation of Australia’s public assets, essential services, infrastructure and strategic capabilities. The proposition was that competition and the profit motive would deliver better results than government. In the light of forty years of experience, how does that proposition stand up today?... 24.01.2022 Of the income support in Australia to date, in this Covid emergency, $32bn has been found and paid for by the most vulnerable, lowest-paid people in the country that’s the people who’ve taken the $20,000 out and $30bn has been provided by the commonwealth under jobseeker and jobkeeper, Keating said COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted young and vulnerable Australians. What we need is a restoration of social democracy, which invests in the public good and not outdated Thatcherism.

21.01.2022 Today marks the anniversary of what the Nazis termed Kristallnacht, the anti-Jewish pogrom of 9-10 November 1938. Over two days, the Nazis murdered nearly 10...0 Jewish people, set fire to synagogues and Jewish schools, and plundered 7,500 Jewish-owned businesses and homes. Kristallnacht is considered to mark the shift from antisemitic rhetoric and laws, to violence and other anti-Jewish aggression which culminated in the murder of six million Jews in the Holocaust.

21.01.2022 When Joe Biden visited a few years ago, we took him round the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre. It's personal for Joe but then cancer is personal for so ...many families. We made a joint commitment that day to keep fighting cancer. To keep funding research and searching for cures. His humility, humanity and sense of fairness was plain to see. And it's those strengths I know he'll bring to the presidency. Congratulations to Joe and Kamala Harris. You did it.

21.01.2022 Is it time to look again at the role of organised labour in the economic planning of government? Can workers’ representatives, industry leaders and economists work together to develop policy? In recent years the Australian economy has come under increasing international pressures and lost its manufacturing sector, the collapse of the vehicle and airline industries being recent examples. We are over reliant on fossil fuel and mining exports. How can we transition to a more ad...vanced economic standing within the global economy, with a stronger focus on industry? How can we create more high-skilled, secure, rewarding, and socially useful jobs for Australian workers? Can we build sovereign Australian industries and leverage our renewable resource assets? Organised Labour and the Future of Industrial Strategy Steve Murphy, incoming National Secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union Professor John Wiseman, Professorial Fellow at Melbourne University’s Sustainable Society Institute Date: Wednesday - 23rd September 7:30pm Location: Online using Zoom (details below) Please RSVP prior to the event on our Fabians webpage. https://www.fabians.org.au/future_of_industrial_strategy Steve Murphy is the incoming National Secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union. Steve has worked for the AMWU since being elected as a workplace delegate as a young tradesperson in the NSW Hunter Valley. Over the past year, Steve has been working with environmental organisations to build consensus on a transition away from fossil fuels that puts workers at the centre. Professor John Wiseman is Professorial Fellow at Melbourne University’s Sustainable Society Institute. His main focus is on strategies for accelerating the transition to a just and resilient zero-carbon society. He works in the fields of climate change and sustainability risks and challenges; the consequences and drivers of globalization; regional economic and employment priorities; and community wellbeing and social justice policy frameworks and strategies.

18.01.2022 Queensland Fabians are delighted to invite you to our first event of 2021! Thursday 18th Feb 2021, 6pm AEST The challenges of the past year have hit employment levels hard, with a million Australians now unemployed, and many more underemployed. The political conversation for 2021 - likely a federal election year - will be #JobsJobsJobs. A growing movement of lefty economists are advocating for a focus on policies aimed at full employment, in rejection of the current NAIRU, w...hich aims to keep a portion of the population involuntarily unemployed as a method to 'fight inflation.' Young Labor for Full Employment are a group of over 300 YL Members across the country advocating for full employment within the ALP and encouraging the conversation on full employment policies. Join us to hear more about their work - and what exactly do we mean by full employment policy? Is it achievable? Can it help in formulating a justice-based transition to a clean energy future?

18.01.2022 Join Victorian Fabians on Wednesday evening with Eva Cox, of the University of Technology Sydney, and Emma Dawson, Executive Director of Per Capita, for a discussion on COVID-19 and the 'Pink Collar Recession'. This event is the second of two where we want to collect your thoughts on issues relating to a post COVID-19 world. Our ideas will be collected together as a "Letter to Labor" to help inform the policy agenda.

18.01.2022 The Rudd Labor Government's decisive action during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis saved Australia from what the rest of the developed world now calls the Great Depression. The Rudd Government went hard, they went early and they went households. By contrast, the Morrison Government has - and continues to - go late, go half-measures and only go for measures that benefit your mates a la their sports rorts and dodging the accountability a siting parliament. We will all pay the ...price with a deeper, more painful and more extended economic depression. It took a Labor Government to get us through the dark days of Word War 2 and build the foundations for a peace that brought an effective, future-oriented, post-war reconstruction program that led to decades of full emplotyment and growing prosperity. The Morrison LNP Coalition doesn't have the capability to do this. It will take a Federal Labor Government to pick up the pieces and build a prosperous, sustainable and equitable future. See more

01.01.2022 For many Australians, 2020 was a year they’d prefer to forget. What's worse if you’re poor, a woman or from marginalised racial and ethnic groups you’re more likely to have lost your income, or be pushed into poverty. #auspol
