25.01.2022 Our PhD student Shin Park just published the first study presenting mental health symptoms, disability and functioning levels of young autistic adults presenting to mental health services. Young adults with ASD report significant mental health needs that are similar to other young people with major mental health diagnoses. With little research and many cases of autistic adults being denied access, we are calling for an increase in investment to improve access and research evidence addressing the mental health needs of young autistic adults. https://journals.sagepub.com//full/10.1177/1362361318823925

20.01.2022 We have published a couple of papers recently examining how neuropsychological vraibles predict disability in young adults. What was most important was that emotion recognition and all of the typical assessments we do might be different in disabilities like ASD, but mental well being is the most important predictor of disability! See both papers below. We believe this focus on mental well being is very important. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41398-018-0282-8

16.01.2022 Do you have a child (aged 3-5 years) with Autism Spectrum Disorder? We are seeking children with Autism and their parent/guardian to participate in a research study we are conducting. The study is looking at the effectiveness of a new nasal spray in reducing social and behavioural difficulties in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The nasal spray is being studied in combination with an established social learning intervention, called the Parent-delivered Early Start Denv...er Model (P-ESDM). Children and their parents will attend a 12 week therapy program with a therapist, where they will learn how to use P-ESDM with their child at home. To participate, you and your child must be able to attend 5 study visits and 13 P-ESDM sessions at Brain and Mind Centre, University of Sydney over the course of 6 months. If you are interested in participating in this study please contact Rinku Thapa 02 9351 0808 or [email protected]
14.01.2022 Today our 140th young adult with ASD joined our therapy groups at the Brain and Mind Centre for improving mental well being. I can’t tell you how many have previously been turned away from other mental health services. Mental health matters (including for those who might also have disabilities)
