23.01.2022 TECH TIP TUESDAY Producing a more versatile three-layer pearl sprayout card Although three-layer pearl finishes are some of the more challenging for colour ...matching, following a set process can help make the job easier and more accurate. One key step is the sprayout card. ISSUES: The aim when creating a sprayout card is to exactly duplicate the application technique which will be used on the actual job. However, given that a sprayout card is small and the job is likely to be at least the size of a bumper or a full panel, there can easily be differences the spray gun might be a little closer or further away and the layers could be applied a little wetter or lighter. Therefore, the best solution is to create a sprayout card which is as versatile as possible when it comes to matching the particular three-layer pearl colour. TIPS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Half clearcoat To get more options from a three-layer pearl sprayout card, we recommend that the final clearcoat layer is only applied to half of the card. Conventional method The basecoat layer is applied over the whole card, followed by two coats of the pearl layer. Using another sprayout card, block off a third of the card and add a further pearl coat. Block off another third of the card and apply a final pearl coat. You are then left with a card divided into three sections that have two coats of pearl, three coats of pearl and four coats of pearl, respectively. Each of these sections can be checked against the job to determine the best match. Divide into six Instead of applying clearcoat over the whole sprayout card, use another sprayout card to block off half the card down the length and apply clearcoat to just one side. The result is six different sections three raw and three with clearcoat which gives more options for checking the colour match. Checking against the job Take the sprayout card and use the gloss side to check against the vehicle in the sun to determine how many coats of pearl gives the best match two, three or four. The raw side comes into play in the booth. After applying the appropriate number of pearl coats to the job, use the raw section to check it. Adjustments can still be made at this point. For example, say the sprayout indicated that three pearl coats were required but, because it was applied a little wetter on the job, you get a match after two coats. Stop at that point and dont apply the third coat. On the other hand, if the match isnt achieved after three pearl coats, you can add extra coats. Once happy with the pearl layer match, the clearcoat can be applied. Spray for effect It is important to remember that the pearl layer is very transparent and isnt designed to achieve coverage it is designed to cause an effect. For technicians, the challenge is in trying to recreate the same effect which was produced by a robot in the OEM factory! Tinning ratio Particularly for the pearl layer, stick to the products recommended thinning ratio. For example, for PPGs ENVIROBASE High Performance waterborne basecoat system it is between 15 and 20 percent.

10.01.2022 We were at RMS Wagga today and we had to swap number plates. The staff didnt have any screwdrivers and in the short time we were there they copped abuse from not so nice customers for not having them..... its not the RMS staffs fault and it wasnt good We purchased a full set of screwdrivers and we painted them hot pink and dropped them off free as goodwill - hopefully this might make the staff have a bit better day
