25.01.2022 With so many different products on the market, it can be hard to know whats the best food for your pet. These general principles will help you buy a good quality, safe food for your furry friend: - Check the food is complete and balanced this means it has all the nutrients your pet needs for daily nutrition - Check for made to AAFCO standards this is another sign the food is complete and balanced - If produced in Australia, check the food complies with the Australian Standard (AS5812:2017), which is voluntary but recommended

25.01.2022 When plaque and tartar build up on your dog's teeth, bacteria can infect the gum tissue and enter the bloodstream, ending up in your dogs heart, causing heart disease. This is why regular health checks for your pet are so important, so that any potential teeth problems can be picked up early. If your pooch hasnt had a check-up with us recently, book in for a consultation today.

24.01.2022 One of the unfortunate side effects of the COVID-19 restrictions is a reported increase in puppy scams. These scams prey on peoples emotions and trap people by selling puppies online that never existed. To avoid these scams, try to always meet your potential pups mother and view their breeding facility in person before handing over any money. This will also help prevent buying a puppy from unscrupulous or dodgy breeders.

23.01.2022 Heat stress is a risk to all pets, but particularly dogs and those kept in cages, such as rabbits and birds. All pets must have access to shade in a well-ventilated area, as well as constant access to cool, fresh water. Dogs should only be exercised in the early morning or evening. If your pets show signs of heat stress, such as open-mouth panting, collapse, or excessive salivating (dogs), contact us immediately. Let’s stay safe this summer.

22.01.2022 House plants are a great way to bring life and colour to your home but not all plants are compatible with pets. If youve recently gotten new plants (or a new pet), check this list to make sure they arent toxic: - Lilies (including peace lily and lily flowers) - Oleander - Ivy - Sago palms... - Rubber tree plants - Philodendrons - Lantana See more

21.01.2022 Bit of Fun for Friday....we did our own version of people who look like pets

20.01.2022 If your pets coat is looking a little worse for wear since winters end, dont fret, skin and coat health can be maintained with just a few simple steps. Firstly, ensure your pet is on regular flea control and fed a good quality diet. Wash your pet in a gentle, pH-balanced shampoo and only as often as needed. There are numerous skin conditions that can affect pets, so visit the clinic or call us today if you notice any new or unusual changes to your pets skin conditions.

20.01.2022 Is your pet on flea control? Although parasites like fleas are less active in the colder months, as soon as the weather begins to warm, they return with vengeance. Good quality preventatives will stop flea infestations on your pet and in your home, but if your pet already has fleas, its best to decontaminate your carpet, furniture and your pets bedding. Call us today if you need help picking the right flea control for your pet.

20.01.2022 With winter well and truly here, you might have acquired an unwanted possum guest in your house. The first step to show your new guest out the door is learning what you can and cant do about it. Possums are a protected species in most states of Australia, so check with your local council before taking any action. Once youve blocked their access to your roof, consider offering an alternative such as a possum box in a tree in your backyard.

19.01.2022 When travelling with dogs in the car, it’s important they are adequately restrained for both their safety and yours. Many car restraints for dogs aren’t thoroughly tested for safety, with reviews by Choice and the NRMA previously failing many of the available products as unsafe for people, pets or both. Make sure you research car restraints before buying and purchase a good quality restraint that has been thoroughly safety tested to protect both you and your pooch.

19.01.2022 After the year that’s been, we all need a holiday. And while Bali might be out of the question, there are plenty of things to see and do in Australia. If you’re planning on boarding your dog this summer, make sure their parasite control and vaccinations are up to date. All kennels require proof of current C5 vaccination before accepting your dog. If you’re unsure whether your dog is fully vaccinated, or you know they’re overdue, give us a call today.

19.01.2022 Star had an appointment with Dr Alanna tonight. We were all impressed with her trendy and versatile carrier her owner Amy made for her

19.01.2022 Did you know that the amount, frequency and colour of pee your pet produces can tell us a lot about their health? If your pet is urinating frequently and in small volumes, they might have an infection. If your pet is straining to pee but not producing anything, they might have an obstruction. All pet owners should be aware of their pet’s toileting habits so issues can be picked up early. Call us today if you’re concerned about your pet’s pee routine.

18.01.2022 Giving your dog a bath helps to clean their coat, but its also important to regularly clean your pets toys, bowls and bedding too. This helps remove dirt, germs and odour, as well as any potential flea eggs in the bedding. Use a gentle detergent or washing powder, rinse thoroughly and make sure everything is nice and dry before returning it to your pet to use again.

17.01.2022 If you have changed your phone number or address since your pet was microchipped, then it’s time to update their chip details. Check the paperwork that came with your pet’s microchip, as often you can call or update details online. If you no longer have that paperwork, check your pet’s microchip on www.petaddress.com.au to find out which registry they are on. If you don’t know your pet’s microchip number, just bring them into the clinic and we can scan their chip for the number.

16.01.2022 When plaque and tartar build up on your dogs teeth, bacteria can infect the gum tissue and enter the bloodstream, ending up in your dogs heart, causing heart disease. This is why regular health checks for your pet are so important, so that any potential teeth problems can be picked up early. If your pooch hasnt had a check-up with us recently, book in for a consultation today.

16.01.2022 Cats can come into season multiple times a year and breed easily, so it’s important to have your cat desexed to prevent unwanted kittens and other potential issues. Cat shelters often have large numbers of kittens needing to be re-homed, so the best advice is whether your cat is male or female, do the right thing by your cat and get them desexed now! Contact our team for more information about desexing your pet.

16.01.2022 Congratulations Wilby and family for graduating from puppy preschool tonight!! We wish you all the best with your future training

15.01.2022 If your pet has a thick or double coat, youll notice them start to shed as the winter weather comes to an end. Groomers can help to remove the dead hair from your pets winter coat or if you are keen to do it yourself just make sure you use a brush that is gentle on the skin. Brush in the direction that the hair grows and if you encounter a mat, gently untangle it with your fingers. If your dog has several mats, take them to a groomer for assistance.

14.01.2022 Jedidiah the kelpie is so relaxed coming to the vets

14.01.2022 Does your cat get anxious when its time for a trip to the vet? Fortunately there are steps you can take to help make their experience a little less stressful. Get your cat used to their pet carrier before their appointment with us by practicing putting them in the carrier for short periods of time. You can also create a positive association for them by sneaking a few treats into the carrier. Speak to us about calming medications and pheromone sprays that could help keep your cat calm for their next visit with us.

13.01.2022 Urine spraying in cats can be frustrating and an unwelcome behaviour, but what does it mean? The causes of urine spraying vary between cats, so its important to get to the root cause. Some of our feline friends may spray due to stress and anxiety, territory marking or medical causes, such as renal failure or UTIs. Make an appointment with us to say nay to the spray today.

13.01.2022 Regular brushing of your pets teeth helps to prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar and reduce the risk of gum disease. Bacteria from unhealthy teeth and gums can enter the bloodstream, which can cause disease in the heart, liver and kidneys. Book your pet in for a dental check with us today.

13.01.2022 Happy Halloween everyone from Max!

10.01.2022 Thank you Kade and Lavonne Polson for coming in to see us this Winters morning. Your brand new spoodle puppy Blair is adorable and received a clean bill of health from Dr Melissa

10.01.2022 Nothing can bring an otherwise tough dog to their knees like a torn nail. Torn nails can bleed dramatically, but the real issue is the exposed bundle of nerves and blood vessels in the ‘quick’, which can lead to significant pain and infection, if left untreated. It’s best to bring your dog into the clinic if they’ve torn a nail. If there is a lot of bleeding, you can gently wrap their foot in a towel and bring them straight down.

09.01.2022 Have you been asked to bring in a sample of your pet’s urine before? Urine samples need to be free of contaminants, which means you should be careful when catching the urine. If you have a dog, use a clean ice cream container to catch a sample when they squat or lift their leg. If you have a cat, you can get special non-absorbent litter that you use in a clean litter tray to obtain a sample. Ask us if you need help sourcing non-absorbent litter for your cat.

08.01.2022 Working from home and more one-on-one time has likely meant your pet has been spoiled with attention these past few months. Young pets growing up in the COVID-era have likely never experienced large gatherings of people and may be apprehensive during Christmas festivities. Ensure you give your pet a quiet place to retreat to if things become too much and to give them plenty of support if they become anxious. Contact us if you’re worried about your pet’s anxiety.

07.01.2022 Have you noticed your pet shaking their head or scratching their ears more than usual? It might indicate a problem with their ears. Its a good idea to check your pets ears when youre giving them a pat or brush. Look for signs of black or waxy discharge in the ear canals, red scratches on their ears, a yeasty or strong odour coming from the ear canal or irritation or pain when you touch their ears. If you have any concerns, it is always best to bring them in for a check-up.

07.01.2022 As the weather starts heating up, you might be wondering if you still need to use jackets and coats to keep your dog warm at night. If your dog has a short coat or low body fat, they will be more sensitive to the cold and will benefit from a winter jacket for longer. A good rule of thumb: if you see your dog shivering, or if the temperature is under 10 degrees, they will still benefit from a coat at night.

06.01.2022 Between unwrapping gifts, swimming, eating pavlova and playing board games, it can be hard to give your pet the attention they deserve during Christmas. Make a plan beforehand to ensure they are entertained all day long. Make some frozen, stuffed Kong treats with peanut butter or salt-reduced stock as a treat. Consider organising a puppy playdate or, if they’re not a fan of noise, keep them in a cool, quiet room with food, water, toys and bedding until the guests head home.

06.01.2022 Are you fe-line like you need a holiday? If you're planning a getaway this summer, it’s important to check your cat has everything they need before boarding. Make sure your cat’s parasite control and vaccinations are up-to-date. All catteries require proof of current F3 vaccination before accepting your cat. If you’re unsure whether your cat is fully vaccinated, or you know they’re overdue, give us a call today.

06.01.2022 There is a painful dental condition cats can suffer from called FRL (Feline Resorptive Lesions). The condition occurs when the tooth is eaten away, exposing the sensitive pulp of the tooth. Symptoms include lethargy and reduced appetite, and treatment involves removing the affected teeth. Cats with FRL dont always show signs of mouth pain and may require teeth x-rays to diagnose the condition. An important reminder to regularly have your cats teeth checked. Is it time to check your cats teeth?

06.01.2022 A few extra snacks and more comfy couch-time is likely translating to a bit of excess weight gain - and not just in us humans. Due to reduced activity and increased access to food, this downtime may have also added a few extra pounds to our pets. Before taking steps to reduce your pets weight, ask us for advice to ensure your pets weight-loss plan is safe and appropriate. We can weigh your pet and help you develop a sustainable plan to get them back to a healthy size.

06.01.2022 If you find a baby bird all by itself one day, take some time to watch, and ensure its parents arent still around caring for it. If the bird is small and not fully feathered, try to find its nest and, if you can, place it back inside the nest. If you arent able to reach its nest, call your local wildlife group to seek further advice. If the bird is injured, just bring them into the clinic and we can check them over.

05.01.2022 Though they are bundles of joy, kids and puppies need their interactions monitored in order to stay safe. If pushed far enough, any dog can bite. Thats why its essential to be adamant about training and socialising your dog. Teach your kids to read dog behaviour a growl means its time to back off. Establishing boundaries and providing safe spaces for your dog is also important. Try giving your pup a little me time by using a child gate to portion off sections of your house.

04.01.2022 Max doing a great job providing cuddles to our clients

04.01.2022 Audrey the Netherland Dwarf rabbit was in this morning to see Dr Alanna for a complete health check before her desexing surgery. Speying a rabbit helps to reduce undesirable behaviours and reduces the risk of uterine cancer

04.01.2022 With rent, bills and all meals supplied our pets get it pretty good. There is, however, the risk that our pets can overeat if their food is too readily available, which can lead to obesity and other health concerns. To help prevent overeating, only give your pet access to food at designated meal times for a limited period. Keep your pet active with exercise and stimulation activities, so that theyre not only focused on food. Speak with us for advice on how much food to feed your pet, as sometimes food volume can be reduced.

03.01.2022 We had a litter of puppies in tonight with their family having their first vaccinations. The girls Lyra, Melody and Piper were a fantastic help

03.01.2022 As fleas dont reproduce as rapidly in winter as they do in other seasons, it might seem easier not to worry about pet flea control during this period. However, if you heat your house or have a surprise flea nest in your skirting boards, bypassing your pets regular flea preventatives may risk your house being overrun with the parasite. Continue to use flea preventatives year-round and throughout winter to keep your home parasite-free.

03.01.2022 Fletcher a 9 week old West Highland Terrier came to see Dr Melissa today for a FREE puppy health check - he was given a clean bill of health and lots of cuddles from Meagan

02.01.2022 While out and about our staff spotted a mother koala with her baby walking along the side of the road. Please be careful when driving our native wildlife are very active at the moment

02.01.2022 As the cold and wet days linger through winter, remember to keep your pet warm, dry and comfortable. Carefully place your pets bed out of the weather and away from draughts, with a dry towel or rug to keep them warm. Coats can also help to protect your dog from the rain and keep them warm. Colder weather can also exacerbate arthritis in older pets with stiff joints, so chat with us today if you have any health concerns about your pet during winter. With a little TLC, your pet can stay warm and cosy while outside gets wet and cold.

02.01.2022 Some foods are delicious for us humans but very unhealthy for our pets. Steer your pup clear of chocolate, grapes, sultanas, onions, garlic and macadamia nuts, as they are all toxic foods for dogs. Some pets can also be lactose intolerant and become sick if they consume dairy products, like milk or cheese. If you do feed your pet dairy products, only feed in small amounts as a treat, and stop if any vomiting or diarrhoea occurs. Speak to us for further advice on which foods for your pet to avoid.

02.01.2022 Today we shed happy tears as we said goodbye to Boo, who was discharged today after a long stint in hospital. So proud of this dedicated team who never gave up

02.01.2022 Canine cough, or kennel cough for its link with boarding kennels, is brought about by a group of viruses and bacteria that cause upper respiratory disease in dogs. Many causes of kennel cough can be vaccinated against, but your dog must be vaccinated annually for them to be fully protected (much like the human flu vaccine). Signs of kennel cough include a harsh, dry cough, loss of bark/voice, fatigue and nasal discharge.
