24.01.2022 Living Memorials are just that - trees with an end-of-life expectancy. We all hope that such special trees don’t meet their fate during our generation. It’s critical to ensure the purpose and legacy of the original WW1 plantings continues to honour the service, sacrifice and suffering of those members of local communities who went to war. The call to action in Mortlake’s case is to make sure new trees are planted, nurtured and encouraged to thrive for the next three or four generations or even longer. #wewillrememberthemall #avenuesofhonour

With traditional services and marches cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, RSL branches in every state have unanimously endorsed the gesture, with families across the nation expected to stand at their gates, on balconies or verandahs at 6am on Saturday April 25. RSL South Australia has addressed public requests for dawn service resources by posting a home ser...vice guide with a format and links to bugle calls and national anthems at https://bit.ly/3aSuhKr The Adelaide Dawn Service (closed to the public) will be live broadcast commencing at 06:00 on ABC 891 with Peter Goers and on ABC News 24 (not the ABC main channel). Even if you normally attend the Adelaide Dawn Service, do not attempt to attend this year, as there is an exclusion zone around the memorial and police will move you on. You can listen to your local ABC Radio from your driveway or balcony via your mobile phone. 10.01.2022 WW1 pandemic victims: we remember them all At Queensland’s oldest Avenue of Honour, one tree remembers Cyril Abraham, cut down in France not by conflict but by the pandemic that killed up to 100 million people more than were taken by World War One.

09.01.2022 FREDERICKTON'S LIVING WAR MEMORIAL There may be no Anzac Day gatherings at our cenotaphs and parks this year, but personal moments of remembrance can always be ...marked under the shade of our living war memorials: the trees planted across Australia to honour our military service people. These trees are living reminders of those who have served, sacrificed and suffered and to keep them alive. Located on Frederickton Ferry Lane, across the river from Frederickton town, the Frederickton Memorial Avenue of Camphor Laurel trees was planted by Frederickton townspeople in 1919 to commemorate the town’s World War One veterans. The plantings formed an avenue of trees on the southern approach to the Frederickton ferry across the Macleay River. Known memorial trees from across Australia are listed by Avenues of Honour at avenuesofhonour.org. They welcome contributions to improve and expand on the database noting that there are still many living memorials yet to be recorded, trees that were planted by mothers and wives, children and returned service people to commemorate their loved ones. Lest we forget.

01.01.2022 Who knew? Avenues of Honour has a new listing for Finch Hatton, Queensland (~ 60km due west from Mackay). Investigations clearly reveal much about the WW1 Diggers' Memorial, prominent on one side of Anzac Parade - but courtesy of a query seeking the planting date of the related avenue of honour trees - AoH was found wanting (as we are for many of the national records of living memorials). Courtesy of a significant tree register published by Mackay Regional Council in 2012, most of the 16 trees are identified as Mango trees!
