20.01.2022 MARCH IS EPILEPSY AWARENESS MONTH Epilepsy is a neurological disorder. When the normal electrical activity in the brain is disrupted this causes seizures. Anyone can develop epilepsy, it is not just genetic or a birth abnormalty. Epilepsy can be caused by head trauma, stroke and infectious disease of the brain. Unfortunately for half of those who develop epilepsy the cause is unknown.... Around 250,000 people in Australia are currently diagnosed with epilepsy, that’s more than those diagnosed with Parkinson's, cerebral palsy, MS and muscular dystrophy combined. 11.01.2022 MARCH IS EPILEPSY AWARENESS MONTH 800,000 Australians will be diagnosed with epilepsy at some stage in their life. Epilepsy First Aid... 1. Stay with the person 2. Time the seizure 3. Keep them safe. Protect from injury especially the head 4. Roll into recovery position after the seizure stops (or immediately if food/fluid/vomit is in mouth) 5. Observe and monitor their breathing 6. Gently reassure until recovered 7. Call an ambulance if there is an injury; if the seizure lasts for longer than five minutes; or if after the seizure ends the person is having breathing difficulties or is non-responsive. DO NOT - Put anything in the person’s mouth - Restrain the person this may cause them to become agitated - Move the person, unless they are in danger Get on board and raise awareness for Epilepsy! Focal disruption can also move from one place in the brain to another.... - Depending on where in the brain a Focal seizure accures, the person can be aware of the seizure. - Seizure can cause muscle stiffening and/or jerking, or the person could just look like they are staring off into the distance. - Everyones experience with Epilepsy is different.
