25.01.2022 "Our Dad, Elvis, had just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This was a shock to our family and extremely heart-breaking so we decided to refocus on ways to help." Melissa and her sister Kimberley were a last minute registration for Remember September, having only formed Team Elvis on the 1st of September. Little did they know they would end the month on top of the Team Leaderboard having raised over $23,000! But the dollars for research is not the only rewarding outcom...e for the sisters and their family... "My hope has been achieved... and that was to open the topic, accept and acknowledge what has come about with Dad. Remember September has not only helped raise awareness and funds for research but it has also helped engage conversation amongst our immediate family and friends. It has invited those close to us to be a part of our journey and give their help by donating to the cause." Congratulations to Melissa, Kimberley, Team Elvis and their supporters for taking out the Top Team Fundraiser for Remember September 2020 with such a huge contribution to the fundraising tally. Donations remain open in October so if you feel inspired and want to make a difference for Australian's impacted by #pancreaticcancer, then jump onto the website: https://www.rememberseptember.org.au/cms/home #yoursupportmeanseverything #RememberSeptember

20.01.2022 "It's the first anniversary since my Grandad died from pancreatic cancer. Because of Coronavirus restrictions, we can't get together with family to remember his life, so I am going to shave my head and raise funds for research in honour of him." 13 yr old Claire from Victoria bravely shaved her head 10 days ago and raised $2600. Thankfully she has her Avner Foundation beanie to keep warm! Claire was inspired to organise this fundraiser after seeing our story about another yo...ung lady, Leonie Long in South Australia, who also shaved her head to raise funds for #pancreaticcancer in memory of a loved one. We are so grateful to have such dedicated young people supporting the work of the Foundation. Thank you! https://avner-foundation-fundraising.raisely.com/claire-sch #yoursupportmeanseverything
18.01.2022 Cancer Australia has invited Australians to have their say about the development of the National Pancreatic Cancer Roadmap through a Public Consultation hub. The Consultation Hub will involve key stakeholders including the Australian community, people affected by #pancreaticcancer, health professionals, clinical colleges, researchers and research institutes, cancer organisations, peak bodies and government. Cancer Australia CEO, Professor Dorothy Keefe said, "We are calling ...on all Australians affected by pancreatic cancer to participate in the public consultation so that we can draw the Roadmap together. Where do we want to go, how do we get there, and how we get over the bumps and roadblocks on the journey?" The Consultation Hub will be live from 1 September until 30 November 2020, and we applaud this consultative approach and encourage our community to contribute - this is the time for your voice to be heard. Resources available on the Hub website include questions to consider, support details and a choice of how to have your say: https://consultations.health.gov.au//national-pancreatic-/ #cancerofourgeneration
17.01.2022 We'd like to say huge thank you to Channel 9 for the amazing support of Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation over many years, most recently by donating a significant amount of furniture for our Sydney-based head office. Sadly, two icons of both Channel 9 and Australian media, Peter Harvey and Ian Ross, each lost their battle with #pancreaticcancer in years past, bringing a spotlight onto the disease in the media industry. The wonderful support like this allows Avner Foundation to channel more funds into cutting-edge pancreatic cancer research at Australia's top institutions, to ultimately make an impact to dramatically increase survival rates and quality of life for those impacted by the disease. 17.01.2022 Are you over 18 and living with cancer or caring for someone who is? Cancer Symptom Trials at UTS - University of Technology Sydney is conducting a survey to find out which cancer symptoms have the biggest impact on daily life for people who are living with or after cancer, and those who take care of them. The Avner Pancreatic Cancer Foundation is supporting CST in conducting this important research. For more information and to participate in this survey, go to www.uts.edu.a...u/cst/cstprojects Please note that the survey will close on Monday 31st August 2020. #pancreaticcancer
17.01.2022 This year has seen a few of our community members shaving their heads to raise awareness and funds for #pancreaticcancer but Perseverance Drilling, Underground Pty Ltd in WA will be the first to embrace dreadlocks! Check out their Dreads-4-Dosh campaign and the very inspiring reason why they have chosen the Avner Foundation as one of the beneficiaries of the money they will raise. #yoursupportmeanseverything

11.01.2022 "This challenge is going to be hard but pales in comparison to the pain of losing our dad." Caity, Alex and Zach McLoughlin (aka Team Mango) have given up all liquids except water this month in honour of their Dad, Peter McLoughlin, who sadly passed away after a short battle with #pancreaticcancer earlier this year. "We were really struck by how aggressive the disease is, how fast it takes hold. Our Dad had a reputation for being a very strong and stoic man. He never stopped ...trying to fight the cancer, so it seems right that we try to help those who are fighting pancreatic cancer through research." Wishing the McLoughlin's all the best with their Remember September challenge! If you would like to sponsor Team Mango or take part in the challenge in memory of a loved one impacted by #pancreaticcancer then go to the Remember September website to donate or register now: https://www.rememberseptember.org.au/ #RememberSeptember

10.01.2022 "Remember September has been a great way to educate and involve the people around me on this cancer. It has also helped me keep busy & focused whilst in the midst of recovering from surgery." Elvis Govic in Melbourne was diagnosed with #pancreaticcancer 10 weeks ago and has since undergone a Whipples procedure and is currently having chemotherapy treatment. With the help of his two daughters, Melissa and Kimberley, Elvis has inspired a whole team of friends and family to take... on the Remember September challenge. "I have given up alcohol, sugar and coffee to help me combat pancreatic cancer, improve my gut health and my overall wellbeing. By doing the Remember September challenge, I hope to bring more awareness about pancreatic cancer and open the subject for discussion with family and friends - not to be afraid to talk about it because it's real." Thank you Elvis for sharing your story and good luck to Team Elvis for their final week of the challenge. If you would like to show your support, go to the Remember September website and make a donation: https://www.rememberseptember.org.au #RememberSeptember #yoursupportmeanseverything
05.01.2022 Our hearts are heavy with the news of Justice Ruth Bayer Ginsburg's death from metastatic #pancreaticcancer. Justice Ginsburg was an incredibly accomplished civil rights lawyer who devoted her entire legal career to the pursuit of equal justice and eliminating discrimination of all types. To quote Ruth: "Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time". ... Avner Foundation will continue to fight to improve outcomes for people affected by pancreatic cancer. RIP "Notorious RBG".
04.01.2022 There has been huge support and participation across Australia for the first weekend of #PlayinPurple, with players of all ages from a host of clubs all wearing purple socks in their matches this weekend to raise awareness for #pancreaticcancer. Special mention to Lilli Pilli Football Club who motivated almost 100 teams to get their purple socks on, creating a festival-like atmosphere across their grounds and posting hundreds of photos on social media to support the campaign ...in the first weekend. Thank you to the club and local Mark Speakman MP who joined Avner Foundation CEO, Michelle Stewart, and Pancreatic Cancer Matters Megan Barnes with visits to thank players and get involved in the day. On the Northern Beaches of Sydney Zali Stegall OAM, MP joined Seaforth FC on a sunny morning to show support for #PlayinPurple and see Seaforth Oval turned purple for pancreatic cancer. Also thank you to Georges River FC Harbord Football Club Miranda Magpies FC Manly Allambie United Football Club for sharing posts of players getting behind the initiative - way too many photos to share on this single post. #PlayinPurple is on for the next two weekends so please share your photos of players playing passionately in purple this September! #yoursupportmeanseverything Zali Steggall Mark Speakman Manly Warringah Football Association Sutherland Shire Football Association Football NSW
03.01.2022 I decided to take part in Remember September to remember Dad and how strong he was. He didn’t have pancreatic cancer, although he had 2 forms of other cancer and battled for about a decade to overcome them. He was always so supportive and encouraged me to push myself to be the best person I could be. Ashleigh Duggan, from Brisbane, is halfway through her first Remember September challenge of giving up all liquids except for water for 30 days. Inspired by her Dad who sadly p...assed away last December, Ashleigh is keen to also use the challenge to embrace some healthier lifestyle habits. During the lockdown months of COVID-19 I started drinking a lot more alcohol, most weeknights, and a lot more on weekends. I also found I was heavily reliant on my morning coffee to wake up and was replacing hunger and thirst with tea throughout the day, rather than water. I’m hoping that by giving up all liquids except for water that I have a better ability to deal with general stress and anxiety, and also the emotions that come with remembering Dad, not by reaching for another bottle of wine, but actually dealing with my emotions in a healthy way and sharing stories with friends and family. Wishing Ashleigh all the best for the remaining couple of weeks of Remember September! If you would like to show your support, you can find Ashleigh on our Meet the Challengers page of the Remember September website and make a donation: https://www.rememberseptember.org.au/ #RememberSeptember
03.01.2022 We are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Chris Baggoley AO, former Chief Medical Officer of Australia, to our board of directors. 02.01.2022 As we fast approach the end of the month our Remember September challengers have reached another major fundraising milestone! 02.01.2022 David Roby, CEO and Director of Fitness at Velocity Fitness & Health, has been volunteering with the Foundation for a few years now, getting Brisbane all warmed up before they embark on the annual 5km Put Your Foot Down walk. Despite not being able to do that this year, David is as motivated as ever to keep supporting the cause having been personally impacted by pancreatic cancer on more than one occasion. "My Grandad was the most important person in my life and losing him ...at a young age, at a time when you would like to have that figure and role model in your life, was a difficult time." Then in 2016 he lost a very close family friend to #pancreaticcancer. In 2016, my best mates Mum suddenly got very sick at one of my gym classes and from there had around 5 months until she passed from Pancreatic Cancer. She was like a second Mum to me, as is my Mum to her boys. David’s company, Velocity Fitness and Health, has registered 4 teams for Remember September one for each challenge option. Each team will be lead by one of the gym’s personal trainers and they will be encouraging their Velocity Fitness members to join a team and give up either sugar, alcohol, caffeine or ALL liquids except water for the month of September. Thanks to David, his team and gym members for their support and goodluck for #RememberSeptember! www.rememberseptember.org.au
