18.01.2022 We need YOU to attend the Avoca Community Bank's 20th Birthday Street Party 5.00pm to 9.00pm Friday February 22nd, to collect your Token and place it in the ADHS Inc Box.

18.01.2022 This is E. Snell's General Store, which formerly occupied the site which is now the Avoca IGA Express. Note that the shop windows went right to the corner. Who can tell us when that section of the premises was rebuilt as a residence?

16.01.2022 2019 AGM will be on 4 November at 3pm: http://home.vicnet.net.au/~adhs/2019/08/15/2019-agm-notice/

15.01.2022 Can anybody tell us where in High Street Avoca the Ebeling Cash Store was situated? Major Gus Ebeling served in the Boer War, again in WW1, and tried to enlist for WW2 but the recruiting people apparently thought he was too old!

14.01.2022 Percydale School November, 1941 pupils & teacher; who can name them?

09.01.2022 REMINDER OF THIS EVENT THIS COMING SUNDAY - OPEN DAY Help celebrate 150 years of continuous education provision in Talbot (formerly Back Creek). EVENT: 150th a...nniversary of Talbot State School No. 954 Former Common School, later the Prince Alfred School There will be historical displays at the school, which will also include some of the other now-closed schools near Talbot, such as Amherst and Dunach. The day will also be Farmers’ Market Day in Talbot, so why not take the chance to enjoy the atmosphere and fresh produce at the market, as well as visit this historic school. The famous Talbot Provender and Eatery will also be open. The original Common School in the middle of the photograph beneath this building still exists on the same site to the rear of the Talbot State School.

08.01.2022 This is what Snell's site looks like in 2016. It has been suggested that the demolition of the corner section of Snell's store and its replacement by a residence was possibly done by Iles Golder?

07.01.2022 Early newspapers are one of the major sources of information held about the history of the district. They contain detailed reports of court hearings, council meetings, church services, social occasions, concerts, obituaries, mining, agriculture, viticulture, typhoid epidemics, the need for better quality water supply and drainage to avoid such epidemics, etc. Coverage of such matters was more comprehensive in the early newspapers than is commonly seen today, and they really ...Continue reading

06.01.2022 Hi. I'm a great great granddaughter of an Avoca resident, Edward Leonz Heer. He emigrated from Switzerland in 1855 and lived in the Avoca/Homebush area from 18...55 to about 1875 when he emigrated to New Zealand. My 83 year old father and I are doing the family history at the moment. We have already searched on Ancestry, Family Search and Trove as well as many NZ sources to build up a good chronological history of much of his life. However, before we put it all into a story, we would like to enquire as to whether you have local records that aren't available online that you could share with us? If you are interested, when we have finished writing the story, we would like to give the Society a copy of it for its records and safe keeping...
