16.01.2022 Antimicrobials have saved millions of lives and have kept us safe. But antimicrobials are losing their effectiveness. This is known as Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). ... AMR is a serious global threat to human and animal health. We can stop AMR if we all work together to use fewer antimicrobials. Not all sick animals need antimicrobials. Only use antimicrobials under veterinary supervision. You can prevent your animals from getting sick by regularly vaccinating them, making sure their environment is clean, and providing good nutritious food. You can help stop AMR - to find out how visit www.amr.gov.au/

08.01.2022 Green forest floors aren’t always what they seem. After a bushfire, the green can often be invasive weeds that can rapidly displace native vegetation. That's exactly what happened in the Montane Wetlands in the Barrington Tops National Park, Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area, with invasive Scotch Broom and Ox-Eye Daisy weeds emerging following last summer's bushfires.... But thanks to the Australian Government’s $200 million bushfire recovery fund for animals and plants, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and Hunter Local Land Services teams are successfully tackling these fire-adapted weeds that can continue to spread quickly and vigorously long after a bushfire. These actions are supporting habitat for many native animals including the chubby-cheeked native Broad-toothed rat, identified as an at-risk species following last summer’s bushfires.

As a double whammy, unburnt areas were invaded by other species such as the aggressive and territorial Noisy Miner. Step forward Hunter Local Land Services, BirdLife Australia and The Aus...tralian National University who carried out post-fire control of the Noisy Miner to help boost numbers of Regent Honeyeaters. Additionally, 20 captive-bred birds were released in June in the Lower Hunter region. This bushfire recovery project, conducted over 1800 hectares of known breeding habitat, has been a great success with sightings of two pairs of Regent Honeyeaters with a combined total of five healthy chicks! These efforts were supported by the Australian Government’s $200 million investment in bushfire recovery of our native plants, animals and special places.
