25.01.2022 Eating a healthy and balanced diet doesn’t have to be ridiculously difficult or completely unattainable. Making sure you eat plenty of fresh fruit and veggies, wholegrains, nuts, seeds, and good quality protein sources *seems* like a simple thing to do for most people. But for a lot of us, we are starved for time in our busy schedules to be able to dedicate to making sure we are eating healthy. Eating for nutrition basically means that we are making more conscious choices f...or our food and how we choose to fuel our bodies. Ensuring we have healthy snacks in the house instead of junk food will go a long way to helping us stay on track with nutritious food choices. We all know how easy it is to grab a packet of something over something healthy. By eliminating the temptation, you will (hopefully) make a better choice if you are reaching for snacks at home. What are your go-to snacks at home? Don’t worry if it’s not healthy, there’s no judgement here. I want to see if I can help you swap it with something that will be better for you. I’ll go first My favourite snacks are slices of apple smeared with a nut butter or pieces of pineapple with coconut yogurt and sprinkled with cinnamon. I have a weakness for something crunchy and satly.like biscuits which I ended up swapping out for sweet potato wedges with seasoning and baked in the oven until crispy because I know that I feel better when I have proper nutrition. #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #Hydration #Nutrition #Sleep #StressManagement #Stress #Exercise #Movement #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease
24.01.2022 What is Intermittent Fasting? Intermittent Fasting (IF) dictates more of a schedule of eating rather than telling you the foods you should be eating. Does that mean if you are doing IF and you are only eating between the hours of 12pm-8pm you should only eat chocolate biscuits and chips? No. It’s not a license to eat junk because that won’t do anything for your long-term health. IF means that you choose a time period during the day and only eat during those hours. Most peopl...e typically choose to eat between 12pm and 6pm to do IF. This means that for 18 hours of the day they are technically fasting. Others may find it suits their body to eat between 11am and 7pm. Changing the hours in which you eat can also help you to be more conscious of your food choices since you only have a limited amount of time when you can fuel your body. It is also recommended that those starting to intermittent fast should extend their fasting period gradually to allow their bodies to adjust. Don’t forget to stay hydrated. Packing this time with nutritionally dense foods means you will be optimising what you are putting in your body. It’s really important that during this time, you take advantage of what you can do with your meals and jam-pack them with high quality protein sources such as beans, legumes, nuts, tofu, fish, and lean red meat. Be sure to include healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, and chia seeds, and lots of complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. Remember to speak with your healthcare practitioner if you need guidance before commencing IF. #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #Hydration #Nutrition #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease
24.01.2022 In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, now more than ever, we need to start considering our health and wellbeing and what that looks like coming into Winter. While we still have some sunny days left over from Summer, is a really good time to get out into that sun and rebuild our vitamin D stores so that we can combat illness during the colder months. Vitamin D, not really a vitamin and more like a hormone, is an essential nutrient for immune and nervous system regulation. This... means that it is also useful in improving mental health, especially since stress from this outbreak is causing a lot of anxiety within the community. Remember to be safe in the sun, know your limits and don’t go out and spend hours unprotected in the sun. 5-10 minutes a day is plenty, and make sure you are wearing a hat and other sun protective gear if you need to spend longer outdoors. Stay hydrated if you are spending lots of time outside too. Heat is a sure-fire way to lead to dehydration, and dehydration leads to inflammation, which can then wreak havoc on our immune system. Some vitamin D-rich foods to be mindful of: Fatty, oily fish such as mackerel, salmon, and trout. Some soy products Egg yolks If you have concerns about your vitamin D levels, speak with your primary care physician. #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #Hydration #Nutrition #StressManagement #Stress #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease #Immunity #VitaminD #MentalHealth

21.01.2022 We have learnt previously that vitamin D is great for the immune system, but did you know that Vitamin D is essential for optimal mental health as well? There are lots of studies that show that vitamin D deficiency is linked with depression, some psychiatric illnesses, and seasonal affective disorder a condition in which people are mentally adversely affected by the weather (typically occurring in countries where there is minimal sunlight and longer winters). Vitamin D has... so many important functions in the body and its effects are so intertwined with multiple systems, is it any wonder that vitamin D would also have a role in mental health? Here are just a few articles explaining vitamin D’s role in maintaining and preserving mental health: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2908269/ https://www.psychologytoday.com//psychological-consequence https://bmcpsychiatry.biomedcentral.com//1/1471-244X-12-38 #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #Hydration #Nutrition #Sleep #StressManagement #Stress #Exercise #Movement #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease
20.01.2022 One of the challenges of having a Connective Tissue Disorder is excess bruising. My soft tissues around my joints are more flexible / mobile, so it’s easier to roll my ankle, especially when I’m tired and haven’t been exercising (strengthening) as much as I should of been. Foot and ankle strengthening is imperative for those with Connective Tissue Dosorders that cause more mobility in the soft tissues, like Marfan Syndrome. #ConnectiveTissueDisorders #marfansyndrome #footstrengthening #wholebodyhealth
19.01.2022 How can diet affect our gut health? For a start, we need lots of fibre in our diets to help keep us regular and gently clean our colon. Fibre also helps us to feel fuller for longer, regulates our blood sugar, and has been shown to assist in the prevention of some chronic diseases including colorectal cancer. What foods can we eat to look after our gut? ... Eat plenty of fresh produce including lots of fibrous vegetables such as beetroots, celery, carrots, kale, and broccoli. Eating a variety of brightly coloured fruits and vegetables will help to provide all the vitamins and phytonutrients that are essential for your gut health. Include some fermented foods in your diet such as sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, or kombucha. This will help with colonising healthy bacteria in your gut, which are responsible for regulating mood and helping your immune system. #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #Hydration #Nutrition #Sleep #StressManagement #Stress #Exercise #Movement #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease #Gut #GutHealth #ColorectalCancer #ColorectalCancerAwareness
18.01.2022 The best time to get the most benefits out of lemon water is first thing in the morning, pretty much as soon as you wake up. Squeezing half a lemon in water and drinking it upon rising will help to kickstart your digestive system and also provide much needed electrolytes after a long night of sleep. Lemons are plentiful in vitamin C too, which has immune boosting, anti-histamine, and anti-inflammatory properties.... Lemon juice first thing in the morning will also assist in stimulating your digestive system and help to get everything moving first thing. Why don’t you wake up tomorrow and add this simple practice to the start of your day? #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #Hydration #Nutrition #Sleep #StressManagement #Stress #Exercise #Movement #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease #Gut #GutHealth #ColorectalCancer #ColorectalCancerAwareness

15.01.2022 Do you eat breakfast? I am really interested in hearing if you eat breakfast or not. If you do, comment with a picture below of what your breakfast looks like. ... This is what I had this morning. A breakfast smoothie. The origins of the word breakfast literally means to break the fast, meaning because we are not supposed to be awake overnight and eating, our first meal of the day (typically in the morning) is the meal that breaks the fast. In our next post I will talk more about Intermittent Fasting (IF) and what it actually means to fast and how some people may benefit from it. There are lots of different types of fasting, but IF seems to be one of the most popular ways to fast these days so that’s why I’ll explain more about it. Have you tried fasting before? If you have, what did you do and how long did you fast for? #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #Nutrition #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease #Breakfast #Fasting #IntermittentFasting
15.01.2022 I developed the Fundamentals of Health Program after my own experiences left me with the need to nourish the foundations of my health before I could get back to being myself. This program was created out of necessity, and because I was smack-bang in the middle of the healthcare system and as a healthcare provider, I could see exactly what was needed to help people in recovery. If you have only just recently followed my page, the Fundamentals of Health are: Hydration... Nutrition Sleep Stress Management And Movement The Fundamentals of Health Program is an evidence-based program that focuses primarily on the five fundamentals of health listed above. Practitioners that have purchased the program will have life-long access to the suite of digital and print tools that they can then share much-needed evidence-based health education with their patients, while still practising within their scope of practice. Available within the program is an educational booklet on the 5 Fundamentals of health that is backed by research, an patient education video series, a screening tool, patient diary and access to the practitioner resource library, that you can send virtually to your clients or present during consultations. To purchase your Fundamentals of Health Program today, visit my website below And if you order before the 30th April you will receive a 15% discount on the program! #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #Hydration #Nutrition #Sleep #StressManagement #Stress #Exercise #Movement #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease
14.01.2022 This month I will be sharing lots of information on how to improve not just your colorectal health, but your digestive health overall. Colorectal cancer affects 1 in 24 people in their lifetime. These are huge statistics! Our digestive system is responsible for so many functions in the body. It is one of the first lines of defence for our immune system, it helps to regulate our moods and mental health, it even has an effect on our skin. Looking after our gut health is so im...portant for long-term overall general wellbeing. When we ignore the signs and symptoms our gut gives us after eating a crappy, nutrient-void meal, we are doing our body a disservice. 13.01.2022 Marfan Syndrome is thought to affect 1 in 3000-5000 people. Awareness of some of the clinical features that could lead to early diagnosis can save lives. When my aorta dissected in July 2010 I was so blessed that it didn’t burst I went to my GP multiple times with severe migraines, fatigue and eventually my heart had been working so hard that it grew in mass and I could see my clothes moving up and down as my heart beat to pump enough blood around my body. 7 months later ...the dissection was found and I was rushed to hospital for life saving surgery. #MarfanSyndrome #EarlyDetection #LifeSaving #ConnectiveTissueDisorders

10.01.2022 What are wholefoods? Wholefoods are what the food looks like before any processing has been done to it. When we talk about wholegrains, we mean the entire grain the endosperm, the germ, and the bran. Not what ends up in cereal boxes or breads. That is not a wholegrain, but is the result of processed grains. ... Some wholegrain examples include: Barley Brown rice Buckwheat Millet And Oats Eating wholegrains ensures that you are reaping the benefits of the whole food, which is far more nutritionally dense than its processed relatives. The fibre in the wholegrains also helps to regulate blood sugar whereas when the grain is stripped down and processed it has less fibre in it causing spikes in blood glucose not good for anyone. Other wholefoods include fresh fruits and vegetables, beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Make sure you are eating plenty of wholefoods every day and minimising the amount of processed foods you eat will lessen the impact of negative ill-health effects that come from processed foods. #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #Nutrition #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease #BloodGlucose #Wholefoods #WholeFoods #WholeGrains
09.01.2022 Building a support network during social distancing and isolation. More now than ever, we need a supportive team of people in our lives to help us get through this crisis together. Just because we should practice social distancing and self-isolation as much as possible does not mean we have to break our connections to the outside world. If we start pulling away from those we love then it will begin to have an impact on our mental health and we need to focus on caring for al...l aspects of our health, not just immunity alone. How can we build our support network during self-isolation periods? Having regular video calls with family and friends can help with emotional connection and strengthening bonds between loved ones. Also, just because we are practicing social distancing and self-isolation does not mean that you cannot go outside. If you need a breather, go outside and take a deep belly breath in for a few moments. Release the tension that you were holding in your body. Remember that if you do go outside, you practice the government recommendations for social distancing and remain a safe 2-3m away from others. #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #Hydration #Nutrition #Sleep #StressManagement #Stress #Exercise #Movement #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease
08.01.2022 So, you have heard me talk about nutritionally dense foods previously. But what does this mean? Much like superfoods, nutritionally dense means foods are packed with essential nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and fibre. Although, I feel as if all whole foods are basically super foods, since they provide so much nutrition and benefit for the human body. Take the humble kiwi fruit for example. Per 100g contains (approximately):... 3g fibre (RDI is up to 30g) 15mg magnesium (RDI 400mg) 85mg vitamin C (RDI 45mg) Chickpeas per 100g contains (approximately): 20g fibre 4.6mg iron 134g magnesium This is only some of the nutrients that are in a kiwi fruit and chickpeas but for such tiny wholefoods it certainly packs a punch! #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #Hydration #Nutrition #Sleep #StressManagement #Stress #Exercise #Movement #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease

06.01.2022 When you are newly diagnosed with a chronic health condition it is scary. I remember feeling that this is my lot, I am limited in what I can do, it is incurable.... I was very much in victim mode. Getting myself out of bed, where I was hiding was challenging. Initially I didn’t know how I was going to move forward from that place. A few Health Professionals I went to see, held my hand to take the first few steps. Did I know it would help...? At that point, no... I still didn’...t think I could be better. Slowly, I began to feel some change in my body. I was eating better food, I reduced the toxins I was putting in my body with different personal care products, I drank more water, I started gently moving my body again. I started to believe that the decisions and actions I took each day were making a difference. I can feel better. I can have less pain. My body can heal. 05.01.2022 Carbs: The difference between simple and complex . When most people think of carbohydrates their brain is immediately drawn to bread, pasta, rice, etc. What a lot of people don’t know is that there are different types of carbohydrates and they can be separated into two categories: simple and complex. Simple carbs generally have a higher GI (they provide lots of energy at once), will generally be lower in fibre, and overall have a lower nutritional value than complex carbs.... Complex carbs can be found in beans, nuts, fruits and vegetables, and wholegrains. Since complex carbs have a longer chained molecular structure, the energy is sustained and slowly released. Complex carbs will tend to be higher in fibre too, which is not only great for your gut health but also great for helping you to keep fuller for longer. And because complex carbohydrates come from wholefoods, you are also getting a more nutrient-dense version of carbohydrates because of all the essential nutrients that comes with including more wholefoods in your diet. #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #Hydration #Nutrition #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease #Carbohydrates #Carbs #ComplexCarbs #SimpleCarbs

02.01.2022 Footwear and the Hypermobile foot Generally, when feet are more mobile or hypermobile the shoes need to be lighter in weight. A heavy shoe may encourage more malalignment of joints or abnormal motion when walking. It can also make the feet more tired and achy because it adds more load or stress to soft tissues.... When choosing a runner have some mesh and not all leather can lighten the weight of your shoes. If the sole of the shoe has more shock absorption or is softer in the sole then this does reduce the forces that come from walking on hard surfaces such as concrete. This means that the joints have less load throughout the day. If the joints are loose or more mobile then the soft tissues such as muscles, tendons and ligaments have to work harder to support the joints. A shoe that hugs or holds onto the foot, like a lace up runner gives the joint some more support and reduce the load on our soft tissues. This is especially important when walking or standing for periods of time and when exercising. I’ve found in clinical practise that a person with mobile or hypermobile feet, especially the high arch flexible foot (flexible pes cavus foot type) are usually more perceptive earlier if a shoe is going to be a problem or uncomfortable. If the shoe feels lumpy, hard, too heavy or you just think it may get better when worn in. Then this is not the right shoe for your feet. The shoes should feel very comfortable in the shop. Like it was made for your feet ;) Getting professionally fitted to ensure you get the right shoe for your foot type and shape is top priority. Trying on, feeling and walking in the shop will help you make the best choice. #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease #MarfanSyndrome #MarfanAwareness #ConnectiveTissue #ConnectiveTissueDisorders #Genetic #Inherited #Autoimmune #Autoimmunity #Hypermobility #JointHypermobility #Feet #Foot #Podiatrist #JointHypermobilitySyndrome
01.01.2022 I’m sure many of us are feeling the stress of the current COVID-19 outbreak and because we are trying to protect ourselves, our families, and the community I know there are lots of us that are minimising non-essential gatherings with groups of people. For many of us, this can be really isolating and quite a scary experience, which can only exacerbate our anxieties surrounding this illness. I encourage everyone to continue connecting with people so that we don’t lose touch w...ith the community or our family and friends. This doesn’t mean that you have to go out in public if you don’t feel comfortable doing so, but try connecting in other ways. The internet is here to help us connect with others, so let’s use it for that. Use FaceTime, Skype, or WhatsApp to video call your loved ones. If you are currently in self-isolation, use this time to reconnect with loved ones that you don’t usually get the time to talk with. Maintaining our connection with others is a really positive way to help others through these times, especially vulnerable people that might not be able to have human connection with people. #AlliedWellness #AlliedWellnessProgram #AlliedHealth #GeneralPractitioners #AlliedHealthPractitioners #AlliedHealthMelbourne #FundamentalsOfHealing #FundamentalsOfHealingProgram #FundamentalsOfHealth #WholeBodyHealth #ChronicDisease #MentalHealth #Connection #COVID-19 #CoronaVirus
