20.01.2022 Help care for companion animals: https://awla.org.au COVID-19 means shelters are at risk of closing to the public and operating with reduced staff. In light of ...this we would love your help with a cat, dog, rabbit or other animal in need. If the current crisis has you spending more time at home, and craving company, a pet companion could be the perfect solution for you and help an animal in need. Fostering a pet typically means that an adoptable animal lives with you temporarily while awaiting a more permanent home. It helps prevent overcrowding in shelters, and can be especially helpful for animals that need special care, like very young kittens or puppies. Ideally with sufficient people coming on board as foster carers, pets staying in cages will become a thing of the past. Our best friends will enjoy a regular home environment ready for their transition to an adoptive home. Animal shelters across Australia have put out pleas for people to consider fostering and adopting. Shelters are already preparing to close to the public and have cancelled events. Fewer pets are being adopted out, yet many are still arriving every day. There is a real and immediate need to move animals into foster homes, as shelters are hit with staffing shortages. Having a pet around has real benefit in these stressful times. If you foster or adopt an animal then you will be able to enjoy the space and exercise in areas deemed safe, as well as give and receive much unconditional love. If you foster or adopt a cat then confined inside together will mean cuddles, play and general feline fun. The benefits physically and emotionally to people and pets are endless. Contact our members in your State through our website awla.org.au. If you’re not in a position to foster or adopt but still want to help animals in your community, Animal Welfare League Australia recommends donating to AWLA or on our Members sites or go to our website https://awla.org.au

19.01.2022 An aged care home where pets are welcome.

19.01.2022 AWLA is deeply saddened by the devastation to communities, their animals, wildlife and the environment caused by the bush fires. Our members in each state offer different services to the communities impacted. These services include temporary accommodation and veterinary services for displaced companion animals and some wildlife. If you are in need of these services, please contact the states directly or go to their websites. Help support the temporary homing, supplies an...d vet support of the effected companion animals. https://www.givenow.com.au/awla Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the bushfires, as well as the brave firefighters of whom we are so proud of.

19.01.2022 The NSW government is amending the code on the welfare of greyhounds. We support greater alignment of the NSW Code with the Victorian Code and ultimately National harmonisation of legislation in this area. Greyhounds deserve better. www.awla.org.au/about-awla/policies/

11.01.2022 COVID-19 is seeing reduced human interaction (for very good reason) with people in self-isolation and restricted visits to aged care homes comes. Pet-friendly aged care homes can combat loneliness through the companionship of animals living at the care homes. Aged care homes can see reduced human interaction for many good reasons, not just for COVID-19, so it’s becoming more important to be pet-friendly. Those at home in self-isolation can also turn to their pets to lift their spirits. We can all enjoy the benefits of the human-animal bond in this challenging time by allowing pets to share their love and be loved in return #pets #companionship #elderly #loneliness #familyandfriends #agedcare

02.01.2022 Pets are living longer, no doubt about it. Here is a beautiful story of the world's oldest cat. We often see cats thriving over the age of 18-20, and have sever...al feline patients in their 20s now. With the advances in care available, combined with the strengthening of the human animal bond, our pets are able to enjoy longer, quality lives. So just because your cat has turned 12 years old, please don't write him off as "old". That is definitely the new middle age for cats! Cherished Pets offers our region’s only dedicated home service for end of pet life management. We walk this very special path with you through this very profound phase.
