23.01.2022 RETIREMENT NEWS | Former Futsalroos captain Greg Giovenali has today announced his retirement from competitive futsal. Giovenali is widely considered one of the greatest players to don the green and gold for Australia in the five-a-side version of the game, and tributes have been flowing from former teammates and friends. Daniel Foggarty said of Giovenali, "In all sports there is a player that has dominated consistently at the highest level; Michael Jordon, Cameron Smith, (Li...onel) Messi and (Cristiano) Ronaldo, Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, and [they] have the trophies and accolades to go with it. This guy is no different." In another heartfelt tribute on social media, former international teammate Dean Lockhart said of Giovenali, "My captain! My brother, mate and roomie (sic) for life - congratulations on what can only be described as an absolutely legendary career. I’m gutted that we’ll never get to don that green and gold jersey again together but beyond proud, honoured and privileged to have known each other for the past 20-plus years and form the bond we have!" Giovenali's career highlights include captaining his country and scoring against Brazil for the Futsalroos in the FIFA Futsal World Cup.
