23.01.2022 Who would’ve thought Building Surveying and Archeology had anything in common? Footing inspection today on repairs to a heritage listed building in Cooktown. Seagrens Inn is approximately 140 years old. Note the heritage listed granite kerb and channeling, iron rod below the existing road surface (not sure what this was for) and the thick ash layer in the strata, possibly from the 1919 Cooktown fire.

18.01.2022 Special Structures - In Queensland, the Building Regulations give Building Certifiers discretionary powers to assess special structures. These are typically structures that are outside the box and don’t fit the usual regulations. Final stage inspection of a special structure constructed at Habitat Port Douglas tourist attraction today.

13.01.2022 COVID - 19 update Yes we are open! We’re doing our best to keep the approvals issued and inspections done so our industry can get through this tough time. We ask that you refrain from visiting our offices if you can and email applications instead of hand delivering them. ... We intend to keep working until we are directed to stop, so other than the expected distancing and sanitation requirements it’s business as usual at Baker Building Certification!

04.01.2022 Preliminary final inspection of the heritage listed Old Cairns Courthouse restoration on Abbott Street today. Due to the heritage constraints the builder and design team had to be very cognisant of the heritage significance of materials used. To match the existing flooring a specific tree had to be milled (in the Atherton Tablelands) and kiln dried to match the species. Some external walls are constructed of in-situ poured concrete which comprised of river gravel aggregate which nowadays is no longer used. In cross section each seperate pour can be seen in the wall.
04.01.2022 Even though COVID 19 is having effect, it’s business as usual for Baker Building Certification. Slab stage inspection in Tolga this afternoon.
02.01.2022 Final inspection with Queensland Fire and Rescue of a large isolated building at Dimbulah. This building is a large mango packaging factory that is separated from all other buildings on-site and provided with fire truck access around its perimeter. It’s also naturally smoke ventilated instead of being provided with a fire sprinkler system (note the mesh vents in the walls and at eave level).
