25.01.2022 A very very small minority of people with a true leg length difference need to worry about the unevenness of their leg lengths. By design, we're uneven.. so to make us even, despite the fact that we function unevenly, in our books, is nonsense. However, asymmetry is contextual.. so we will ask ourselves questions like:... - Why are they uneven? - Was there an acute spike in a behaviour that propagated this asymmetry? - Is the asymmetry causing a strength deficit? - Is the behaviour likely to continue? - Is there a history of trauma we need to be aware of? There is a laundry list of contextual factors unique to the individual. Moral of the story: A) Health pros need to stop blaming your leg length issues as the cause of problems - it's just a sign of how they function and that's it. B) If you know someone that's been told this.. send them this post.. it might help them. 24.01.2022 Sumo deadlifting is NOT cheating! Choosing the right lift for your levers, allows you to have the optimal pivot point. It's not a preference, unless you have the luxury of not having an anatomical bias.... Optimal leverage implies that the power to lift the bar is coming from your powerhouse (your hip) rather than leveraging on spinal muscles. We are NOT saying it's unsafe to deadlift with a rounded back. If your pivot point remains stable throughout the lift and it's through the hip, have as rounded a back as you'd like. As long as your pivot point remains fixed and is preferably through the hip - where power comes from. The sumo is a great choice for someone with constant lower back irritation or general jacked-ness after minimal loading through the deadlift. We know that the position of the vertebra doesn't actually change before or after an ‘adjustment’.. Even that word adjustment could imply that we are correcting a position. Absolutely, things can move better after, things can feel better after, almost as if things have been put ‘back into place’. 06.01.2022 It’s quite simple. Mobilise an area to improve range of motion first and follow it up with an exercise targeting the use of that area. Mobilisation: an area thinking we are mechanically pushing tissues and structures to increase range of motion, but the majority of what we’re doing is stimulating the nervous system. That stimulation creates a better sense of awareness, thus control. So the first step is to decide whether it really needs to be strengthened or whether the brain just needs to build a better strategy on how to incorporate its use. Sometimes, your strategy doesn’t incorporate the lower trap at all, and thus, you need to get reacquainted with it, by targeting it in isolation. That’s the first part.. ... Once you’ve built enough strength and awareness in the muscle, the best next step is to incorporate that into movement in the vertical plane - for example, as shown in the video.. We often only use a certain range of a muscle or joint because our brain recognises, through behaviours, that that is the most efficient way to move. By provocating the brain to recognise that we can use more of a range of a joint or muscle, we create new behaviours and new neural pathways.... 03.01.2022 SAME SIDE OR OPPOSITE SIDE Everyone loves a bit of glute action Often we do really well with exercises that challenge the glutes in sagittal plane (forwards/backwards) e.g. squats, deadlifts, hip thrusts. However, the glutes have an important role in controlling movements in the coronal (side-to-side) and transverse (rotation) plane. A way to get some bang for your buck is to hold a counter-weight in one hand when performing a lunge - but which hand should you hold it ...in? One study found that if you offset the forward lunge and hold a dumbbell in the opposite hand of the leg moving forward (contralateral), it significantly improved glute med activity compared to holding it on the same side (ipsilateral). The idea is that the counterweight will challenge the opposite glutes to provide triplanar stability during the movement. You could probably apply this to other variations of the lunge e.g. walking lunges or Bulgarian split squat, but Interestingly, glute med activity was not affected in a traditional split squat regardless of which hand you held the weight in WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Holding a dumbbell on the opposite side during a lunge challenges the glute med more than holding it on the same side -- Stastny, P., Lehnert, M., Zaatar, A. M., Svoboda, Z., & Xaverova, Z. (2015).
